Are you watching Bravo’s popular reality series Flipping Out? The show is now in its 4th season, and I’ve been watching since the beginning. For me it brings back nightmares memories of working as an assistant to a brilliant but demanding designer myself. Jeff Lewis has definitely mellowed out on the show over the years, though. (Makes me wonder if my designer has, too? For the sake of whoever is working for her now, let’s hope!)
Jeff lives and works from a beautiful house he renovated in Los Angeles called “Valley Oak.” He’s been trying to sell it off and on since the reno was finished, and it’s back on the market for $2.495 million. Let’s take a look!

House Beautiful’s Kitchen of the Year was designed by Lewis. You can see the photos of it here.
Jeff’s Office:

Jeff says he hasn’t seen former BFF and business partner Ryan Brown since the Fall of ’09 when they had a very ugly and public falling out on the show. I took a poll at the time to see who you were siding with in the feud, and you can see the (surprising to me) results here.
Oh, and you can see photos of Ryan Brown’s house, too–I posted them here.
For more photos and information about the Valley Oak house, check the listing.

Jeff does seem to have mellowed a bit, thank goodness. There is no way I could ever work for someone like him. I love the show regardless though. The Valley Oak home is beautiful, but not my style at all. It is too sparse and neat and tidy for me and my family.

I really miss Ryan on the show. Flippin’ out is still one of weekly indulgence(s). My favorite episode is the one with …. ” the exorcism ”
Here is the Virtual Tour.. http://www.valleyoakdrive.com/
I’ve been watching Flipping Out since the first episode, too, and I love it. I wish they’d show more of the house assistant, Jett, though. He is a little bit hot.

I faithfully watch that show and sympathize for all his employees. You would have to have nerves of steel and a thick hide to work for him. All that said there is something I really like about him. It’s a love/hate thing. I would love to see his house in person…eat a mexican lunch in his dining room:) I adore that painting in there btw.

Honestly, I know rooms are supposed to flow and all, but I really couldn’t tell one room from the other… Obviously, I’m not a designer and so have no concept of continuation and all that, but I like a change of scenery when I move from room to room… Not my style at all, but I’m sure there’s plenty of folk out there that would love this look… and that’s the great thing out being able to use our homes to express our personal taste! The house is nice, but not my style.
Anyway, have you seen the new Showtime show The Big C? Her house is beautiful – real, messy, not huge – I would love a blog post about it! (When you get the chance….)
Thanks!

Julia – I have the same type of, ummm…”memories” when I watch this show, too! I get kind of stressed out for all of Jeff’s assistants and sub-contractors. Reminds me of a job I had in L.A. and I’ll leave it at that. Nonetheless, I still love that crazy show. Thanks for the tour of Jeff’s house!

That house isn’t my style, looks too bare. I must admit I don’t watch the show. The previews I’ve seen show him being rude to people, I don’t want to watch that.

I am such a fan of Jeff’s style and business savvy–and totally scared for the people who work for him! It does make for great tv though. Thanks for the tour and the newsflash!

I’ve only caught this show a couple of times. What I don’t get is why is he always trying to sell the house? Is he bored? If I completely re-did a house, I would want to live in it and enjoy it.

He’s a house flipper–or, at least he was until the real estate market tanked. He buys a wreck, fixes it up, and then lives in it until it sells and he moves on. This one hasn’t sold as quickly as ones in the past, though, so he’s been there for awhile.
This is one of those wacky shows I can’t help but watch! My favorite character is Zoila!
I don’t really care for his house, but I’d kill for the outdoor space and views! What I do like is Ryan’s house, especially the kitchen. I have kitchen envy. LOL!

Jeff is such a train wreck. He is going to have a car wreck someday. This season has shown him multi tasking while driving.
This year seems a tad boring.
Ryan should have his own show.
I’ve only seen 5 minutes of this show here and there and am always turned off by this guy’s attitude. I don’t let people like this into my life, so why would I watch them on TV?Who needs the drama?
That aside, I LOVE this house! The architecture and interiors are spot-on. If this is any indication of his work, he has a great eye for design.
Wow! I don’t lean towards modern, but this is classic so it appeals to me! I L O V E Ryan Brown’s house!! I’ve never actually seen the show believe it not.
Jeff is crazy, but he has an energy and charisma that pulls you in. Of course, Bravo’s great editing keeps the most mundane occurrences seem interesting. And, you have to love his assistant, Jenny, and her coolness to deal with his neuroses.
He should of listed in March, the market above $2,000k has stalled in LA and it is hard to get more than what was paid in 2007 no matter what improvements have been made. Also too much bad karma in that house. But that is just my opinion.
Will Trace take the job, or run far and fast after grad?
I haven’t seen the show but this house is great. Not everything is my style but I could still see myself living there….you know, if I had that much money

I am a huge fan of this show Julia. Jeff really cracks me up the way he talks to his employees, but really, I’m not sure whether he’s doing that for the show or if this is really his personality. The housing market is still terrible in SoCal, so he’ll be lucky if he finds a buyer for that price.

Love, love, love Flipping Out – he’s a kook, but it’s fun.
Oh, missed this episode, yeah, something to put on tonight as of course it is on my TiVo! Jeff cracks me up, he can’t really be that bad…or can he? Curious about him putting his house on the market. Janell

I have to live in a highly personalized space; having decided to only have art and decorative pieces that mean something, evoke a memory/feeling, to my family, so this home doesn’t appeal to the heart of me even though it is gorgeous. While Jeff is a perfectionist, and has a “cold” streak, he clearly has sincere affection for his employees that they are aware of or they wouldn’t stay. Somehow, somewhere, he shows them that…
Beautiful house although I don’t watch the show. (Love all of Bravo’s other shows though, just never got into this one.) I, however, can relate to working as a design assistant to a crazy but brilliant designer! Even though I was doing interior design not fashion, every time I watch The Devil Wears Prada it brings back all of those memories. I’m new to your blog, have you ever done a post on Meryl Streep’s house from that movie? I’ll have to do a quick search and find out!
I don’t watch the series regularly, but Bravo is my favorite network so I do catch it from time to time. The drama kills me but the resulting homes are stunning. I am a huge fan of the Jeff Lewis aesthetic.
That office is really beautiful.

I have watched Flipping Out from episode one. Jeff has mellowed. He is incredibly funny. I hated to see how things went bad with he and Ryan but I do think Ryan knew exactly what he was doing. I’m really enjoying this season. Can’t wait to see what he does with that Mexican Restaurant. I will be happy for Jeff to sell this house so we can see what he moves into next.
Not really my style (the house or the guy!) but the landscaping and view in that second photo are stunning.

Not my style at all, but I love the walkway up to the house. It’s very inviting.
Yes! I too have watched and enjoyed the show since the beginning.
I love all of his beautiful home designs and this one is gorgeous!

I think that show would send me into PTSD…bad, bad memories of a former job. :s His home isn’t my style, but it is very well done.
The end of an era, but I am sure he will do up another great place.

I’ve been tuning in this year but this season seems rather tame. I’m eager to see tonight’s ep as the commercial is him holding a crying baby haha should be interesting! I also want to jump inside the TV every time they’re eating mexican food! Valley Oak is not really my personal taste, but it is beautiful, clean and austere. He’s so Type A and fastidious I thought he would keep Valley Oak because he likes it so much. Great post!

Uh! I totally love Jeff Lewis and his crazy brain. I love everyone who works with him. I love Valley Oak. I love his clients. I love his designs. And I totally LOVE Zoila. “I hab to get my bikini wax, Jeff! Why you need to know?!?” Wow, I totally love Zoila. But now, wait a minute! When Jenny starts to dance I just lose it. Jenny is crazy-hilarious. I love everything about the show!

I have to admit I LOVE Jeff! His home is beautiful, although it would be hard to live in such a sterile environment. So enjoyed his “stalking drive by” at a former clients home on the last episode. Also, I am seriously addicted to this website – I need help!
Never a fan of the autopsy ready kitchen and a sterile house that makes me think of Barney’s love pad on How I Met Your Mother. Nothing says “no woman lives here” like stainless steel and black & white. Loved the front steps and landscaping.
Give me a break! your house keeper asstistant needs to help zoela out this is his kid not zoela. she needs more breaks living with some one like u.
I love the show and Jeff’s design style. His pets are too adorable. I wonder where Jeff will move next. I’ll be very shocked if his next place is move in ready.
Hi….I just came across your blog, and I love all the pictures you have posted. By chance do you know the artist that did the photography in the living room. It’s the room with the fire place and tv…thank you..

Hola Jeff, vivo en Guatemala, ciudad, me encanta ver su programa, lo miro con mi hija de 12 años, lo disfrutamos tanto que cuando termina el programa hablamos de las casas tan lindas que deja.. Esperamos dure muchas temporadas. Felicidades es un gran diseñador.
Usually I like Jeff’s homes he has designed but I was surprised I didn’t care for the Kitchen of the Year design. It was too much black with some white and too bachelor looking for my tastes. I like pops of black but this kitchen is too dark. He is a hoot to watch but I could never work for him and take his temper tantrums.

I watch the show and have been trying to track down where i can buy photos similar to the ones on the show, the old signs. Any one know who the photographer is or how to find out?
Does anyone know anything about that house painting in Jeff’s office? I love it, would love to find a print somewhere…
I agree with Beth: The painting of the house with brick-colored siding that’s in disrepair is wonderful! I noticed it (or one by the same artist) used to be behind Jeff’s dining table last season and now it’s behind Gage’s desk. If anyone knows the name of the artist, I’d love to purchase an original from the artist. Very reminiscent of Andrew Wyeth to me…love it!
Love you, you have the best job in the world.
