“Jon & Kate Plus 8:” Out with the Old House, In with the New

by hookedonhouses on June 16, 2009

Jon and Kate Gosselin have had their hands full lately–not just with those cute kids of theirs, but with their marital troubles (they just celebrated their 10-year anniversary, but not together), an investigation into whether TLC is violating child labor laws by filming at their house, and even some allegations of pet abuse. Then I heard that they aren’t having any luck in the real estate department, either. Their old house has still not sold, and continues to sit on the market in Pennsylvania. Here it is, from the real estate listing.

Old House:

The house is bigger than it looks from the curb — 3,446 square feet, with 5 bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths. It’s on the market for $325,000. (A reader pointed out that this square footage probably includes the finished basement, which is why the house looks smaller than that. Could be. Thanks, Jen!)

Here’s a photo of Kate and the kids in the kitchen when they still lived there:

For anyone who may not know, the Gosselins star in a reality-TV show on TLC that features them and their eight children (one set of twins, one set of sextuplets).

I really think the real estate agent could’ve done a little more staging for this poor house. It looks sad and abandoned.

I’ll never understand why they can’t open the blinds and close the toilet seats before taking photos that will go on the Internet for the world to see.

I’m dying to know what all those notes on the mirror say. Can anyone read that tiny print? (NOTE: A reader tells me they’re Bible verses. Thanks, Eileen!)

The laundry room comes with two sets of top-of-the-line washers and dryers. A must-have when there are 8 children in your house, I’m sure. Check out the MLS listing for the rest of the photos and more information.

UPDATE: A reader just informed me that the Realtors got so much grief over these photos that they took new ones and have posted them here. It is a little better, and you can see a couple of additional rooms, like the living room. (Thanks, Christy!)

~

New House

The Gosselins now live in this reportedly $1.3 million house in Berks County, Pennsylvania (via TV Crunch and Gosselins Without Pity, where you can see more pics from the MLS listing):

In a recent episode, Emeril cooks dinner for the family in their new kitchen:

Because these were the real estate photos, I assume the furniture and decor belonged to the previous owners, and not to the Gosselins.

No word on how many washers and dryers come with this sprawling new place, but I imagine they have plenty. Just for fun: See what celebrities would look like with Kate Gosselin’s hair over at Us Weekly. (Many thanks to Jeanette of A Passion for Scrapbooking and Stephanie of The Written Word for sending me some of these links!)

To see the fun playhouses they got for their kids in a recent episode, check out this post: Four Crooked Houses for Jon & Kate’s Eight.

UPDATE 2/10: According to People magazine, they finally sold their starter home at a loss, for $258,000.

The post-it notes are Bible quotes.

The old house looks sad and not loved, it looks like it was happily abandoned.
The new house looks ‘staged’ to me.

3 Kristin June 16, 2009 at 9:25 am

Okay the hair thing is hysterical. It goes to show you some of those celebs would be gorg bald. Not digging the Gosselin’s new digg’s decor. Too much pattern and the window treatments…well don’t even get me started. Wish they would’ve called me before they moved in. I’m going to stop now. Julia, thanks for yesterday it was awesome.
PS Dying to know what the notes say too.

Wow I love that show. If possible I would love for you to find her friends house Beth Carson. They featured the house on one show during the Fourth of July and boy I loved her home.

Hi Julia :)

Do NOT get me started on that show. I never got it at all and she was a PITA…ugh. I’m not a fan of either house really and the decor in the new one is butt.

Gosh I sound angry LOL

Their first house really isn’t bad…but I agree about the staging. It’s so interesting to be able to really see inside both homes with the mls photos though…you little detective you. I’m going to have to check out that hair thing for sure.

OK – just looked at the hair photos. They are HILARIOUS! I especially love the ones of Natalie Portman and Reese Witherspoon. And I can just imagine Kate looking at the photos and saying “What? They look good.” Ha!

Okay. Can you please tell who these people are and why they’re in the news all of a sudden? Maybe’s it because my TV only gets one channel…HGTV, but I swear I have never heard of these people. All of sudden I’m seeing them on the front page of magazines, and headline news online, but I can’t find how they got their fame. Was it a reality show? I know I need to get out more. Lol.

Yes, Olive Rue, they are a Reality TV show. Very cute and very interesting when it started out, young couple struggling with everyday issues trying to raise a set of twins and a set of sextuplets, then they became somewhat rich and somewhat famous. Not so cute, not so interesting. Now they are struggling with who is cheating on who issues.

I’m going to click on those links now. Wow – their previous house wasn’t small! I loved that show when they were nicer and coupon clippers. Now I can’t relate at all, and they’re not nice to each other – not fun to watch. But I LOVE that you posted these pix – going to check out more now.

I saw that on your facebook page – so awesome!!

I love their new home, what a gorgeous piece of property…I am praying that somehow they can work out whatever differences they may have for their children…marriage takes work.

Congrats on the 2-wheel bike riding! :) I am not a fan of the green countertops, but I think the Gosselins old house wasn’t so bad. I’d love to have that laundry room. :) Their Realtor should have done a better job with the photos…

Thanks for the tour. As a previous fan of the show I feel such a sadness over the whole shebang and won’t watch new episodes in the new digs. Such a shame. I really hope they can get beyond all of the glam and flashing lights and salvage their marriage not only for themselves, but for those kids. Fame is so fleeting.

I don’t know, the lack of staging is bad but I don’t think that is the reason the house isn’t selling. I always thought it had an awkward layout. If I were walking into a home of that size, I would expect more living areas. I’m sure someone will love it and buy it eventually. It just needs the right buyer! They should take some of their money and invest in a home staging company!

It’s funny how the real estate ad mentions the 2 washers and dryers. I wouldn’t want that. I’d rather have an extra closet in the laundry room. The house has a funny layout. The living room is pretty small and there doesn’t seem to be a dining room, just the eating area off the kitchen.

It’s sad in a way to see the old house that way. As if when they left the bible verses on the mirror, they left God and their trust in Him there with them. Since moving is when most of their problems with the media seem to have started. Some people can’t handle all the fame, and Jon and Kate don’t seem to handle it very well. Jon just wants to be able to go out in public again without all the media, and Kate seems to be feeding off of it. No matter if it costs her, the marriage.

The real estate agent should be ashamed of him/herself. That first home is pathetically displayed. Even with a poor layout, it could be made to be presentable. Hire a stager (ME)
get a painter furniture and it would sell!

Ugh…Can’t stand these people (at least the parents anyway). They whine because they’re being abused by the media and that the public doesn’t understand what they’re going through. Guess what? that’s what you signed up for! For the whole world to see every minutia of your overexposed lives. God help those kids. I cannot wait for the day when we are rid of these reality shows.
OK! Now for the houses: I like the old one. Looks like a nice home and neighborhood. The exterior of the new one is beautiful, but I agree with others who said it looks staged. And I’m not a fan of the decor at all (of the new one).

19 Joan June 16, 2009 at 10:37 pm

Yes the old home was a home, now the new home looks like a TV set. But look how Kate looks now….can her skirts get any shorter? and her hair….she needs to really find a new hairdresser we think lol. I loved seeing all them kids in the old house and there was charm and essence there.
I disagree when I hear they signed up for getting all sexed up looking….does Kate and Jon need to be having shows on new clothes and new motorcycles? I thought that show was on parenting like the duggars. now that home is a wonderful home that family built together.

Y’know, the “old” house isn’t that bad, maybe a little dated. The kitchen does seem sort of small. But the “new” house doesn’t look staged either. Of the pictures here, my favorite room is that big sunroom. But there’s a new offering that’s caught my eye, Julia. It’s on the USA Network and it’s breathtaking. Have you seen the “guest house” that Dr. Hank and his brother are living in on “Royal Pains”? Call the Doctor, I’ve got heart palpatations!

They are a train wreck and those poor kids YIKES….

On a happy note….YEAH LILY !!!!

Their old house isn’t really 3400 sf or whatever it’s listed at. I think the realtor is including the finished basement. The actual sf (according to the assessor’s website) is more like 1500 (not including basement).

You’re absolutely right – the Realtor should have staged that house. Seems it would have sold by now, given its family history.

The realtor is not doing the sale any favors by posting photos of the house looking like that! Coffee cups and open toilets? Have you seen the episode where Kate is disgustedly cleaning the “new” house saying she can’t believe how filthy it is and making faces, etc. It’s a surprise to see how she left the old house! And, those are definitely verses from the Bible. They used to be posted all over the kitchen cabinets as well.

This is the new listing with the house properly photographed…the realtors took a lot of flack for the first set of pics.. : )
The new house is proof that money does NOT buy you class or taste. The exterior is nice but the decor is so vanilla. All the furniture was donated by Lane. More freebies for this greedy, greedy couple.

28 Joan June 17, 2009 at 1:27 pm

Well I have one child and a couple dogs, will lane donate me some furniture? I have one child that I can afford, but hands are welcome, where can we all sign up at? LOL and any Doctor want to give me a free butt tuck? But please not at the expense of my child.

29 Ann-Kristin June 17, 2009 at 3:29 pm

I have actually never seen the show… well, they don’t air it in Norway. But hey, I enjoyed the post anyway. Anything to do with homes, right?

I want to invite you to join my challenge at Sweeterliving.blogspot.com. It’s a picture challenge and I’m pretty sure you would come up with an awesome table…

I think it hasn’t sold because the market here in Central PA, like everywhere else, stinks (and maybe priced a little high?) Also, would you want the house they used to live in with everyone driving by and looking? Not to mention trying to settle with Kate?

31 beth June 18, 2009 at 8:16 am

I like their old house better. I could see myself living there, but not in their new home. Too big and “McMansiony”. The new real estate pictures for their old home are much better. Show off the house better. I love all the cabinets in the kitchen!! So nice. I agree with Ann though. I never thought about that, but you might have the trouble of people driving by to get a peek at the place. Ugh. BTW, we rented Housesitter after seeing your Movie Monday post featuring the house, and we loved that movie. So funny!! :)

I’m so sick of hearing about this couple. Ack! Those poor kids, I feel sorry for them. Goes to show what fame can do to a person’s head… or hair plugs in Jon’s case:-)

New photos aren’t any better than the old. As Eileen said, the house still looks “sad and not loved”. I wouldn’t go see it based on the pictures.

35 Jeanette June 21, 2009 at 8:54 am

I agree, the house looks sad and not loved. And like you said before, it needs some stage work.

Enjoyed the post. :-)

The photos of their new home, show the decoration from the previous owners. Today the Gosselins home has been repainted in tans, creams and the ever present yellow tones throughout, also their family photos flank the walls. I usually watch the show to see inside their home, it has some interesting architectural windows, built in cabinerty and hardwood floors. I posted on my blog about the interior of the Gosselins new home, sometime in early June, your welcome to take a look!

37 Linda February 20, 2010 at 6:46 pm

It is NOT up to an agent to hire someone to stage a home, do you know the cost involved with that? That is up to the seller of the property to do, at their cost.

Yes the Jon and Kate house sold for less then the listed price . . . however from the very start they had the house over priced by $50,000.00 for our area and we told Kate that when she set the price. She really thought since it WAS their house people would be lined up around the block to buy it, and would be willing to pay more then the asking price. Then it sat around as the market only continued to decline. I am a realtor and the listing was with our office, however that link above will no longer work since it is a closed listing. I was not the listing agent though. In the end, Jon and Kate did all the transactions by fax and e-mails and both signed off at different times . . . too funny!
And we never include a basement, finished or not.

38 Lisa April 1, 2010 at 7:07 pm

Linda, it may not be up to an agent to pay for professional staging, but it is up to a realtor to take decent photos! I’m so sick of house hunting and looking at corners of bedrooms, open toilets, dark pictures, photos taken at night, taken on a rainy, gloomy day, pictures of Christmas trees in the living room when it’s April, etc.
Let’s face it, most agents haven’t the first clue how to take pictures and market a house.

39 Stargazer May 19, 2010 at 12:11 am

Interesting, kind of. I saw the episode when they moved in and I can’t help but be tainted by her… “judgment” of the state of the home. Which was perfectly beautiful. BTW, those links are both dead.
