Update: The Tudor Colonial Gets Curb Appeal

by hookedonhouses on February 16, 2010

Center Hall Colonial exterior

Wow! You guys came up with all kinds of great ideas for updating the house that I posted photos of yesterday (“How Would You Update This Center-Hall Colonial?”). I had so much fun reading your comments. Many of you argued that it looked more Tudor than Colonial, and yes, I agree–that was just how it was described in the listing. Henceforth we can refer to it as the Center-Hall Tudor Colonial to make everyone happy. Ha.

Several readers went one step beyond just leaving a comment–they actually sent me photos of how they would give the house some curb appeal. Bethany (Mother of the Munchkins) went with black trim and shutters, window boxes, and a solid wood door:

Bethany's ideas for curb appeal

A reader named Nonnie sent me one, too, saying, “I felt that the gray trim did not go with the golden tan stonework around the front door.  So I took the large gable above the front door and changed the trim to brown.  I also added shutters which are sorta brown.  I think it helps a lot.  It would also look nice with a taupe trim and bronze ‘jewelry’  ie. mailbox, address plaque and lighting.”

Nonnie's ideas for curb appeal

I think the shutters alone make a big difference–not to mention the landscaping. Derek also took a crack at it, and I like the detail he added over the windows. He also gave it a more substantial wood door:

Thanks, Bethany, Nonnie and Derek! If only it were that easy to give our houses instant curb appeal. . .

I LOVE the window boxes!

I remember when we visited Scotland all the homes seemed to have the most gorgeous window boxes – I went CRAZY taking pics of the gorgeousness :)

BTW, you have a lovely blog – I’m hooked on “hooked on houses” :)

At this wee hour you know what is just running through my head in regard to this lovely house? My dear daddy would have said, “Tudor? It looks like a one door to me!” waha!

Goodnight!

: )

What fun. I will have to see if I can do that! I wonder what sort of program they used? I don’t think I am quite that sophisticated YET!!!

The window boxes and the flagstone walkway are perfect!

way too cool. I like them both for different reasons. I love tudor houses. The one on the top tends too look more european in it’s makeover, even german for some-reason. must be the window-boxes…

Fun!! I like aspects of both of those…the window boxes are fun, and I like the landscaping in the second photo!

I love the brown trim and the trees in the yard that nonnie made, but I LOVE the flower boxes and wood door from the first one, lol. So cute!

I was thrilled to see that someone else thought the front lawn was just screaming for a few pretty trees. I loved reading every ones comments…so creative!

I love what they did with the front yard. Windowboxes, Shutters and nice plantings make such a difference.

14 Bailey February 17, 2010 at 10:18 am

That is seriously impressive. I wouldn’t even know where to BEGIN attempting that. Darn my pathetic computer skeels

No shutters on a tudor revival colonial!

17 Pat February 17, 2010 at 12:55 pm

How amazing those changes are! It takes a home buyer with creative eyes to see what a gem that house really is. Great job!

It’s a amazing what some paint will do! Love the change in the trim color and the dark brown period shutters. But me, I’m all about some color lately, and I recently saw an awesome ‘colorful’ door post over at Between Naps on the Porch and I think this house would be perfectly suited to have a whimsical front door!

They’re both so impressive! I especially love the look of the second one — I think it’s the additional landscaping. Nice.

I love that front door in the first one, but I don’t like how it doesn’t have a covered area. It would need some little porch or something.

Out of the two houses, I love the looks of the first house, but love the landscape of the second one.

22 Rachel February 17, 2010 at 6:25 pm

I am definitely a shutter girl! There are very few houses that I DON’T think need shutters! They make a world of difference. Fun to see these changes today!

That is hilarious!!!! I like the second one the best … but I absolutely adore this house in general! Wish I could buy it and be the one to fix it’s curb appeal!

We actually used to live in a Tudor/Colonial- it was one of my favorite houses. So much character. Bethany nailed it with the colors and the windowboxes and Nonnie’s landscaping is perfect

I love the third one. It looks more period and the window treatments are beautiful and practical. The expanded front porch looks more gracious and formal at the same time. Does that make sense? It’s late here.

I love window boxes on everything.

26 Cynthia S May 26, 2010 at 7:46 am

I fully agree that there should be no shutters on a Tudor-ish house! Derek’s interpretation wins, for me. I love the added rooflines he added over the front windows, as well as the expanded curving front stoop. They turn it from a rather bleak facade to more of a storybook look, and somehow also make it grander at the same time. I also really like the shaped formal topiaries by the front door, though the rest of the (existing) foundation shrubs really should be trimmed and made a lot cleaner-looking.

Totally agree with Cynthia S. The baby trees also look nice.
