Before & After: An “Everything Room” Makeover

by hookedonhouses on April 14, 2009

When Michelle moved into her 1920s Colonial, she wasn’t sure what to do with the awkward addition at the back of the house. She says they started calling it their “everything room” because the family gathered there to do, well, just about everything. It was a popular gathering space right off the kitchen, but it desperately needed a makeover.

Before:

The room had lots of doors, and they weren’t very pretty ones. Michelle knew they had to go–along with just about everything else:

After:

As you can see, there’s hardly anything in the room that went untouched. New flooring, doors, light fixtures, paint, and slipcovers make it hard to believe this is the same space! Michelle even got a white TV that would look less obtrusive in the room:

I especially like this work space she carved out for herself. It didn’t take much money–just some paint and creativity.

I love before and afters! Great Job, Michelle! Those hollow core plywood doors send you back to a really bad place in the 70′s.

I think the room is just gorgeous. I’ve been very seriously considering doing a board and batten technique throughout my main living floor space to give it a little bit of character. Hope I can hubby into doing it!

I love me some before-and-afters, and this one doesn’t disappoint! What a fresh, clean look…my favorite touches are the new doors, the wainscoting, and the paint combination. It looks like an entirely different space!

It is amazing what a difference the panel doors alone make. SO MUCH better than those hollow-core doors.

This inspires me to also do an everything room. Or rather, redo it because it literally is the room where we do laundry, watch tv, and do crafts. If it had a bathroom attached, I’d never come out!

26 rue April 15, 2009 at 4:23 pm

Hi Julia :)

Isn’t her room amazing?! Did you see the bathroom?? The whole house is BRILLIANT. She’s really sweet too ;)

35 Gwynneth May 18, 2011 at 2:48 pm

Great transformation! I like the subtle contrast of paint and trim, and the inventive use of the door as a message board/decorative item. I think I’ve found (at last!) the color scheme for my Victorian kitchen. I know they preferred green in those days but I just can’t do it!
