On the season finale of American Dream Builders, the competition came down to two talented contestants who were given the challenge of renovating a California beach house in only 5 days. Take a look at their makeovers and see if you think the right house won.
#1. Lukas Machnik’s Beach House Makeover
Lukas is a designer who loves contemporary, minimalist design. His idea was to create a black beach house with a sophisticated white interior.
The judges flipped over the $30 light fixture he created for the two-story family room out of hardware found at Lowe’s:
He designed and built a 12-foot long table and benches for the dining area. It’s nice that they can fit that many people at the table, but the benches look awfully uncomfortable to me.
He bought some fencing planks at Lowe’s, painted them white, and used them as headboards in the kids’ room:
#2. Jay Riordan’s Beach House Makeover:
Jay went for a more traditional beach house look with his. He called it “Coastal Chic.”
I kind of miss the beadboard paneling that the living room had before, and I preferred the original door, too. He replaced the old carpeting with hardwood floors. I like the look but wonder how practical hardwood would be in a beach house.
He kept things classic in the kitchen with white cabinets and subway tile than goes up to the ceiling:
This house didn’t have a separate master bedroom before (just an open loft area), so he created one for the homeowners.
Now there’s a separate living space outside the bedroom:
There was an uproar online when judges Nate Berkus, Monica Pedersen, and Eddie George chose Lukas and his black beach house (which even they thought looked “fire damaged” on the outside) as the winner. You should read all the comments on their Facebook page alone. I’m guessing the viewers who posted there were in favor of Jay’s beach house by about 10-1.
Which is why I thought it would be interesting to see what you guys thought. Which beach house makeover did you like best? Do you prefer the sophisticated black and white minimalist look or the more traditional beach house bungalow?
I think Lukas is more of a high-end designer who was able to wow the judges every week, whereas Jay is a builder who knows how to design for the way most American families want to live. They’re both talented but with very different styles.
I enjoyed the show and am kind of bummed it’s over. I looked forward to seeing the houses they’d renovate on Sunday nights. BTW, I wrote about the Spanish Bungalow makeovers on the show at the beginning of the competition, too, and you can see how those turned out here:
P.S. Hope you had a relaxing holiday weekend! We spent ours at my aunt’s lake house in Missouri. Kinda hard to get back into the early-morning school and work routine today. It was nice to wake up to this view while we were there! 🙂
