Martha Stewart’s Pink Guest House

by hookedonhouses on September 9, 2008

When I saw photos of Martha Stewart’s guest house in Maine, I was really intrigued. She painted every room in this soft pink color. Not just the walls, but the trim, the moldings, and even the frames like the one on the mirror, above.

Do you like this look? Is it pretty in pink? Or would you rather see the moldings and trims painted white for contrast?

You can see the rest of the pink rooms from the guest house on the Martha Stewart website. Or check out her home office here.

Mmm, so frothy and creamy. Yes, I love it! I think refraining from the white trim enhances the dreamlike atmosphere. Oh, Martha, you did it again.

2 marie September 9, 2008 at 7:07 am

Hmm. This may be a first for me….since I love all things Martha. But…it’s a great big thumbs down. lol

Martha Stewart is the bomb. Love her. Love this guest house. If only we were buds and I could stay there…

4 Jan September 9, 2008 at 7:20 am

I usually don’t like anything Martha does…

But, I do LOVE this Guest House!! It’s peaceful, calm, relaxing and beautiful!!! I wouldn’t change a thing.

The absence of the white, makes it softer…

Love it! My daughter saw it and wants me to do our home like this – can’t see my husband agreeing though :)

I think for atmosphere it was approprirate and a little more modern to paint EVERYTHING the same shade of pink.I normally love white trim, but thats a little more traditional and breaks up the surface of the wall.

7 reagan September 9, 2008 at 8:14 am

I don’t know if I could handle that. It bugs me when people paint everything – walls and trim offwhite or cream so why would I like it when it’s pink? I think it would look nicer if everything was in shades and not just all the same. As in using the pink as a base and bringing in other layers of color. I think if I did it, it would look weird and just because Martha Stewart is famous doesn’t make it any better.

Not a fan of the pink! Maybe one room, but the entire house?? Makes me need some Pepto-Bismol… wait, I’ll just lick the walls.

P.S.- I do like the bedroom. The pink is nice there.

9 Nancy September 9, 2008 at 8:32 am

I love it all, but my favorite color is pink. I know it’s not for everyone.

10 Linda@restyledhome September 9, 2008 at 8:50 am

As much as I love that shade of pink, I think painting it everywhere detracts from the specialness of it (is that a word? Heaven help me…)

When this issue arrived, I looked at that cover intently trying to decide the answer to your very question. I cannot imagine the same treatment in pale yellow, blue, gray, or green being as compelling as this room – though had you told me about this I would have objected, absolutely not! Though I do prefer it in any scenario to pink with white trim in common rooms esp. if men live in the house. I suppose the answer is: It interests and intrigues but it is not my favorite paint treatment in publications this season. Just okay. Lucky for Martha, she can repaint every week if she tires of this!
Best, Catherine

I’m wondering if the pink would drive you mad. Supposedly that pink they use in drunk tanks to calm down violent offenders can make you crazy if you spend longer than 20 minutes (or something) in it. Maybe this is Martha’s plan to keep guests from staying too long?

I like it, but am pretty sure I’d only last two days in it before I’d need some variety.

13 maya September 9, 2008 at 10:26 am

i think it’s gorgeous. i love martha.

14 Rhonda from Minnesota September 9, 2008 at 10:27 am

I would have to say, I was disappointed in this look. The pink and gray combo reminds me of early 1980′s colors.

sorry Martha fans. Not a look I would jump for.

15 rue September 9, 2008 at 10:29 am

It’s beautiful, but not with kids and dogs. I’m still trying to get over the way she makes her beds up with the too short comforter. Have you seen that in her latest magazine?

I had a great grandma who had her master bedroom painted just like this. Wall, ceiling, curtains, dressers, shag rug, bedding, even the attached bath was pink from top to bottom. Totally not my style, but it brings back wonderful memories.

17 Bonnie September 9, 2008 at 11:11 am

I love it. I love pink. Such a soothing blush color. As for it being okay for men, my mother always said men that were secure in their masculinity should wear pink.

One thing about pink is it really is kind to skin tones. Everyone looks GREAT in pink rooms.

18 Angela Grimm September 9, 2008 at 11:42 am

Okay, I love pink, I mean really love pink but I need a little contrast with my pink – kind of like I need a little hamburger with my ketchup or a little lettuce with my salad dressing. You may think more of a good thing is really good but sometimes it is just Pepto Bismal!

19 Bettsi September 9, 2008 at 11:45 am

I do like it. I find it very soothing and soft. If anything, I guess I would take the pink down a few shades so it’s almost a shell color. One of the things I’ve noticed about vivid wall colors is that when you take snapshots in your home, vivid walls compete with the main subjects- your friends and family! That’s way I’m thinking of going back to “barely there” colors. They make a better backdrop for people! What do you think, Julia? Do you like the pink?

20 hookedonhouses September 9, 2008 at 12:31 pm

Bettsi–I think it looks pretty in a picture, but it would be too much for me to live with in my own house. I need a little more contrast in my surroundings, so I’d prefer to have white trim and moldings. -Julia

21 maya September 9, 2008 at 1:41 pm

looking at it again, i’d like it more with silver accessories than gold. i wouldn’t have it in my everyday house, but in a guest house that isn’t used all the time, i think it’s brilliant!

22 Ramona September 9, 2008 at 1:45 pm

Interesting….I also like a bit more contrast….I would definately accent that lovely fireplace. I do love pink…yummy color.

23 plantingoaks September 9, 2008 at 1:56 pm

That’s really, truly, interesting.
I honestly can’t imagine what it would be like to be in the room. It looks sweet and intriguing and up-to-date in the picture, but part of my brain is just nagging me that the lighting is off, and reading everything as off-white instead. I would be very, very curious to see whether that effect held in the real room. I have a hunch it would be a bit much.

24 Laura September 9, 2008 at 2:16 pm

Love Martha, but not this room. I do like the pink color, but throughout the whole house – no, not for me. Besides, I love crisp white trim.

25 Pamela September 9, 2008 at 2:33 pm

I think it works. And, I would love to see the glow it affords in real life!

26 Ms.Tee September 9, 2008 at 3:25 pm

It does look peaceful, but I don’t think I could live with every room being completely pink – white trim might help, though I still think it would be too much for me!

27 bethyoung September 9, 2008 at 3:37 pm

blah. Because she has 300 houses, she can wake up and decide to paint one of them pink. I don’t know anyone that could get away with this. She BARELY has gotten away with it. :)

I’m not a fan.

28 j September 9, 2008 at 3:57 pm

12. Liz – It would drive you mad, and I can speak from experience. My cousin’s grandmother’s Manhattan apartment is painted pink, walls, trim, and ceiling. Every room. Hate it. Hate it hate it hate it. In many ways it is a lot like Martha’s decorating. It was painted that color in the 60s, and repainted that color a year ago. HATE IT! It makes me feel ill after a few short minutes. I hate staying there, and it’s uptown Manhattan and free. It’s beyond Victorian ick. It’s horrid. White trim would not help – no wall or room should ever be that color.

29 Leanne September 9, 2008 at 6:34 pm

Hello Julia

So was there a pink paint sale or what … The shade is lovely but it seems a lazy way to decorate to me … one can hardly go wrong .. I think the room you show is the pick of the bunch.

And what is it with the bed and the 100 and one cushions … I know this is a common decor theme … but I am so over it … my life is too busy busy to take them all off and repalce them all each and every day … assuming the bed gets made each and every day … big assumption. My five year old does all the beds – I am raising a house trained boy x 2.

Anyways heads up I have linked to you and featured you in a wee blurb on http://www.thirdontheright.com … if you have any angst over this please advise and I will retract.

My best Le

30 KayVonne September 9, 2008 at 7:38 pm

I like the pink but I need the white trim. Only someone with a second home could get away with this. KV

31 Robin September 9, 2008 at 8:43 pm

It’s divine for a room or this little guesthouse, but for a whole normal sized house it would be a bit much. I’ve contemplated painting my bedroom this color but I think it would send the boyfriend screaming for the hills.

Interestingly, if she had done the same treatments but it beige we would all be saying “ick. beige. how boring”

32 Norma September 9, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Hi Julia, I just can’t take that color every where, like some of the ladies said about pepto bismal. I don’t think a man could stand living in those rooms. As long as she’s happy with it, that’s all that matters. Next year it will be another color, I’m sure. She likes changing colors alot.

33 Brandee September 9, 2008 at 8:48 pm

Maybe with another color for contrast. Too pink.

34 Debbie September 9, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Hi Julia, you always find the neatest things to ponder.

In looking at that picture, my eyes are betting to see the white trim. That said I think it’s such a soothing look.

35 Debbie September 9, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Oops, *begging* to see the white trim.

36 sandra/tx September 9, 2008 at 10:15 pm

I love pink, but I’m not sure I could do ALL pink. It does seem to be pretty soothing, though, doesn’t it?

37 Linda B September 9, 2008 at 11:46 pm

Wow.
The only thing I can think of is “rose colored glasses”.

38 Amy September 10, 2008 at 7:54 am

I really do like this shade of pink but I really don’t like that everything is one color. I thought the purpose of mouldings was to add character and elegance to a room, not to make it blend in. I’ve seen several rooms lately that have painted the rooms and moulding all one color (I’m thinking of an all turquoise room right now-ick) and it just looks like the trim is begging to be painted. Maybe I’m old fashioned…

39 Darla - UltraBeautyBoutique September 10, 2008 at 3:37 pm

oh! Someone threw up pepto-bismol. Fun.

40 that girl September 10, 2008 at 5:34 pm

love it — bet everyone’s skin looks beautiful there!

41 Elizabeth September 11, 2008 at 8:59 am

How did I miss this yesterday? As much as I love pink… I’ve got to have white trim.

42 Pearl Maple September 13, 2008 at 4:56 pm

Interesting,
not normally a fan of pink myself
the room looks like a cream/peach color here on my screen

Have gotten to the stage with my own redecorating project to shades of cream where I am learing that too much of one thing can be sickly, always need some contrast

43 CrownMolding November 17, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Interesting color choice.

Painting the moldings an accent color would have given the room more dimension and visual appeal.

44 Kathi April 16, 2009 at 7:24 am

I think this looks very soft and welcoming. Not sure I would do this in my home though. I think I would tire of the pink after a while.

45 md September 14, 2009 at 11:33 pm

Does anyone know the brand/ name of color Martha used? Does she have it available in her color line at Lowe’s?

46 hookedonhouses September 15, 2009 at 7:09 am

md–
Check out the link to the article on Martha’s site. You might find information about the paint color there. -Julia

I don’t know…I think it’s a bit “much” in that amount. Like the color, but not for everything.

I’m not much of a fan of pink, except this soft shade. However, this is just too much of any color. Way overboard, Martha!

This is perfect for Martha Stewart’s guest house. I mean, most of us can only go crazy with a theme like this in a wee, jewel box of a powder room. She has enough property that she can devote a whole home to pink. I love it! Please invite me over for a stay, Martha.
