It Only Looks Old: Dromborg Castle in Arkansas

by hookedonhouses on January 24, 2012

Ever dreamed of living in a castle? Well, here’s your chance! Dromborg Castle is only a few years old but looks like it’s been around much longer. The listing boasts that “it was built to reign 10,000 years.”

It sits on 100 acres overlooking the Ozark Mountains in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and it’s on the market for $14.3 million. Take a look!

“Magnificent iron gates open through beautifully crafted stone walls to the private driveway which gracefully winds up the mountain to the estate,” per the listing.

The dining room has seating for 14.

The details they put into this house are pretty incredible. The agent says, “Each room is detailed to perfection including exquisite hand-carved and hand-rubbed moldings, deeply fluted columns, coffered ceilings, antique lighting, and high ceilings.”

The house also comes with a Chapel, Men’s Lounge, Map Room, Wine Cellar, 4th floor Observation Deck, and a 6-car heated garage.

Oh, and there’s a 3,800 square-foot guest house, too. Lucky guests!

Want it? For more photos and information about Dromborg Castle, check the listing by Kristen Boozman of Portfolio Luxury Real Estate. (Thanks to Kim for telling me about it!)

I’ve seen a few listings over the past few years for newer “castles” and generally they are just tacky! This one is certainly the exception…very well done! Can’t you see it out in the wine country of California?
Fayetteville, Arkansas?? Did Wal Mart money build it?

Starwoodgal January 28, 2012 at 9:11 am

Actually, the home is owned by the owners of White River Hardwoods, – nothing to do with Wal-Mart (Bentonville based about 25 miles north of Fayetteville). NW Arkansas is home to several successful self-made businesses on the Fortune 500 list and most of them are not associated with WalMart.

But I’m in agreement – who would buy that?

Architecturally superb. Who would ever expect….. I suppose like Kansas City is such a surprise to many people!

It would be a great house for a Downton Abbey watching party! Can we rent it?

Oh, my! It is a bit much for me, but the design is stunning! I love it when they pay attention to detail. :) I got to stay in a castle-turned hotel once when my family was visiting Germany. It overlooked the Neckar River and was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. This home looks like a little girls’ fair tale dream come true!

I love the woodwork detail on the cathedral ceiling!

In the first shot of the kitchen, viewed from above, it looks to me like the counter tops are covered in moss, but in the close-up, I see it’s just green marble (or granite).

I think I might be in the minority here, but it’s just not my cup of tea…but super fun to look at! Actually, I do really like the woodwork on the stairway.

I love it! it looks as though they spared no expense on that place. I bet they have one heck of a wine cellar!

Hmmm…not for me either.
Some of the individual detailing is beautiful (millwork, masonry, etc.) but it all comes together in such a jumble that it feels fake to me. Or rather, it feels like someone’s idea of what castles must be like, without having actually been in one. Where is the core, original architectural style that the castle is built in? As a result, the facade of the front of the building, the tower part, looks a lot like the back of most real castles.

So glad you featured this little gem in my hometown. The gorgeous mountains around Fayetteville is possibly the best kept secret around. Especially in the fall when the leaves are changing…..love it!!

Beautiful! and such a bonus, no bad plumbing or electrical, or failing architectual elements founds in older castles!

What a nice castle. Thanks for featuring it. I love it when people spend time making every detail as good as possible in a house. That’s what the owners did with this castle and I really appreciate it.

Wow! Whenever I see a house like this, so specific to an individual’s taste, I wonder why they’re selling and who would buy it? It’s beautiful but it’s definitely not for an average Joe.

I must be getting old because all I saw when I looked at these photos were the dollar signs for the staff you’d need just to keep the place dusted. Nice to look at and fun to imagine what life would be like living there, but I much prefer my modestly sized cape cod!

Beautiful details and craftsmanship.
I loved “Kim’s” castle above but think there is a fine line between a huge private home and a small hotel. The number of staff to run place can be the tip-off.

This house could be in Texas.. We use a lot of the same materials (like the stone) as well as the architectural style.

My husband is English. If I were offered that chance to live in this house in England, I’d faint with joy. But anywhere in America, it just feels silly to me. Though the house is beautifully done. The only thing I didn’t like was the kitchen, and I really didn’t like that at all. (And I though the same thing as the previous poster that the countertops were moss covered—maybe I’d have liked that better than what’s actually there!)

Wow, really beautiful and fun to look @. I think the stone is a bit ‘cold’ for me, though.
A very exciting place for a party, though.

cool post and good topic for discussion!… but in my opinion this house suffers from the disease of wanting to incorporate too many styles. it wants to be ruskinian gothic, it wants to be gothic revival, it wants to be renaissance, it wants to be william morris/arts and crafts and i would say that wood panelling is even a bit jacobean. it is just so many styles and even if you aren’t familiar with the actual styles, you might notice it’s just visually off-putting to have so many different things going on at once. better to keep it simple and stick with just one style. :)

Like Kim, I also love to see a house with great attention to detail as with this “castle”. However, I find very large houses more of a burden than a pleasure. I’d love to see that degree of quality in detail go into a more efficient design– something more human scale.

I’m going to sound like my mother on this one but that’s a lot of dusting. Of course if you can afford that house you can afford help but I prefer not to let strangers know what I have in my closets.

Wow that’s impressive. While I don’t live in a castle, I made my New house look old too. After it burnt down, we rebuilt it in its original shingle style!

wow….this castle is fantastic and in one of the prettiest areas in the U.S.
your readers may also be interested in another (new) castle – middle ages architecture) that is in the Eureka Springs, AR area. It’s on the market for 1.8 mil. (such a steal-lol). the name of the castle is Castle Rogues Manor. It really is fascinating but the best part (to me at least) are the stunning views. Absolutely breathtaking.

That castle is beautiful! I think a “home” like that would be best suited for a very large family or as a multiple-family home. I love castles myself.
