Open House #3: Sleek Greek Contemporary

by hookedonhouses on May 6, 2008

The great thing about having my own blog is that I can do what I want with it, really. I am the boss. I can change the rules in the middle of the game.

The boss has hereby decided that since there are so many interesting homes on the market in Birmingham, we’re going to look at two Open Houses each day instead of one from here on out. In other words, I’m adding three more tours to the original five I had planned.

You’ve all been playing along with the game so well this week that I think you can handle it.

The third home we’re going to look at is a 5 bedroom, 4.5 bath contemporary, described on the MLS as a “spectacular classical Greek” home. Can a house be both classical and contemporary? Judge for yourself!

According to the MLS, the home was built in 1988 and is on the market for $1.49 million. The exterior features genuine, multi-layered stucco and a limestone terrace. The inground pool with spa is surrounded by gardens. And here’s my favorite line: “With your own U.S. Open-grade tennis court, you can enjoy the outdoors and find that exercise can indeed be fun!” Any house that can convince me that exercise is fun is one I should probably buy.

Let’s start the tour!

What did you think? Did you like that groovy curved window wall? The sleek kitchen with the skylights? Give us your opinion in the comments and let us know if this is going on your short-list of Birmingham favorites. We’ll vote at the end of the week for the house we’d most want to live in.

Watch for Open House #4 later today!

Oh Yea! That’s what I’m talkin’ about!
This is SO much better than the others. I love this house. No clutter. Very clean. Not too fancy. It says “I’m prim and proper, but not too proper.” I’d take this house any day.

Thanks for coming through with a real home.

This is VERY pretty. This really does look like a mulit million dollar house.

All of my stuff would NOT match this house in any way, but shoot I can redecorate!

My only complaint is that compared to the super tall rooms, the normal sized ones look weird. At least in the pictures. And in the third picture, I don’t know what they were thinking but the doors and the floors are awful. It looks like the inside of an apartment building.

I bet that curved glass room is pain to air condition!!!

I’m not in love with it. I’m barely in “like”. ha ha Some of those rooms looked like the ceilings were 6 feet high. Then the others looked like they were 20 feet high. Weird. Maybe it’s just the photos?

I actually really like this house :) I love the glass and the tall ceilings. The smallish ceilings in the other rooms don’t bother me. In thinking of the other 2 houses shown on here, I like this one because of the smooth lines and more contemporary style.

Did anyone else notice that picture #7, 8 &10 are of the same room, but #10 appears to have been staged? (Less furniture, looks bigger)

This is one of those homes that a really good interior designer could do wonders with.

But, it’s on my short list. Tapping fingers waiting for the second option for today :-)

This one was OKAY. Too many squares and sharp lines for my taste, but I did like the curved window wall, and the room with all of the large windows.

I think “short ceilings” is an optical illusion because there is no frame above the doors in those rooms. The doors go all the way to the ceililng.

This is my favorite so far. I like the ’sun room’ the most. Giant windows on one side and built-in’s on the other.

I think I like it. I don’t know. It’s pretty. It just doesn’t jump
out to me. It looks like a very nice, welcoming, rich couple with grown up children lives there. I know its a strange thing to
say, but I tend to see the people who would live in a house.

I do love some of the architectural details- the curved window wall is completely awesome. When you take out all of the furniture- I think that this is a great modern house. It’s still not my style but it’s got some great details.

I would like to visit, but not live here. I prefer a cozier look.

This one.. not soo much! I like the curved wall and the pool area. Everything else they can keep. It looks cheap inside and kinda !

It depends on the price.

I’m not crazy about this one either, but it does have something going for it that the rest of them haven’t…it looks like the owner’s taste is reflected in the home. The rest of the houses have looked like bad taste decorators got a hold of a huge house and went wild. Something about this one says differently though, this house is a home, where the owners are comfortable.

Well, you know me…okay, you don’t; but this house appeals to me. Not bad for an 80s house.

15 Amy Jo May 7, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Not my favorite style in general, but the windows are fantastic.

16 mamacita May 8, 2008 at 2:24 am

I like the great room with the tall ceilings and the piano, mainly because of the light that is shining in. But mostly the house seems kind of cold-feeling to me. I prefer a little bit of coziness!

So far this is my fav.

Now I know why they didn’t like the last house in the least. You have a contemporary audience. I on the other hand wouldn’t live in this house if someone gave it to me…. ugh! LOL
