Halloween is Coming! (And I’m Not Ready)

by hookedonhouses on October 5, 2008

By JULIA @ HOOKEDONHOUSES.NET

Boy, I wish I could tell you this is what my front door looks, all decked out for Halloween. Or that I have a back porch that looks like this:

But no. Not even close.

Kimba of A Soft Place to Land is hosting a Halloween Blog Party today. I had Big Plans to decorate my house in time, but this whole blog move has taken over my life. I spent another weekend trying to restore missing photos and fix broken links.

Here’s my mantel, which I finally Fall-ified (yes, I made that word up) this week, but that’s as far as I got, decorating-wise. Not a single Halloween decoration has been put up. (To see more photos of my house decorated for Fall, click here.)

So today, as I worked on the computer, a little Halloween Fairy decorated the house for me. What a nice surprise!

Not only did she decorate, but she actually grabbed the camera and took some photos for me to show you. I believe her actual words were, “I did your blog post for you, Mom.” Wow. It’s my lucky day!

Here are some very spooky ghosts guarding the half-wall at the top of the stairs:

Some teeny-tiny pumpkins on the playroom doors:

A jack-o-lantern in the playroom:

Look out! There are some bats and spiders hiding behind the door, waiting to strike!

Some more ghosts got into Lily’s room. Boo!

Here’s the Halloween Fairy, who wants to be sure you don’t miss this little ghost floating around on the landing:

Didn’t she do a good job?

So maybe my house doesn’t look like the Country Living photo spread at the top of the post. Maybe I’m a total loser mom for leaving the house so bare that my 6-year old had to do all the Halloween decorating for me this year. Oh, well.

At least you feel better about yourself now, don’t you? (You’re welcome!)

Stop by Kimba’s Halloween blog party to see lots of creative new decorating ideas that I failed to give you here.

So cute! I need to get my little decorating elf to do that for me. I have been so bad about halloween decorations. I picked up and dumped into a basket a bunch of pinecones today, does that count? No? Sigh. Time to go pumpkin shopping.

That has got to be some of the cutest decorations I’ve ever seen, and I mean that. :) So precious. Don’t worry, I am usually lugging the stuff up in August and just started a couple weeks ago.

Your daughter did a great job, a future designer in the making.

Its times like this I miss my old house and my old porch – it was great to decorate for Halloween (and a great trick-or-treat neighborhood). But I don’t miss raking the leaves!

Your little girl is so cute! I love that she decorated for you. She’s bound to be a pro by the time she’s grown. Love the Country Living photos too!

That’s great. My daughter does a similar thing at Christmas time and even though I love to have things beautifully decorated, these times are for the kids aren’t they? Every year I say that our Christmas tree is going to be decorated with just handmade ornaments, but she puts up a fuss. She’s very sentimental and likes to have the things that have memories attached. I figure time flys so fast and there’ll be plenty of time in the future when she’s grown up to do things my way (and by then I’ll probably miss her so much that I’ll use all of her things.)
Sorry, I know I’m talking about the wrong season but we don’t celebrate Halloween here. Boo hoo!

Julia, your home is simply beautiful, I need a little Halloween fairy to visit me :) How sweet!

You know, my boys are really starting to get an interest in decorating since I have started my blog…it’s actually very sweet. Whenever I buy something new they want to know where it’s going, want to know if they can help, it’s really cool.

Oh, congrats to Nester! That was a nice giveaway! I’ll be having a new giveaway starting tomorrow:)

I hope you get your new blog up to where you want it soon, I know it must be frustrating!

Take care,
Bella

I must say I like the word Fall-ified. Works for me. And your little decorating fairy did a fantastic job! Be sure to tell her we all love it. By the way, I haven’t decorated yet, either. Got the stuff out, but haven’t put it up.

Sometimes it is just as easy NOT decorating like country living (easier clean up!!) Love those pictures though!! Yes, we both thought that we’d get our decorating done this weekend……alas we decided to get some wallpaper off the back wall in the store instead – the joys of being a shop owner I guess!!

After viewing the porch pictures I went out to my own porches only to discover that they have already been decorated the natural way. complete with scary spider webs and all. Lucky me huh? Too bad I don’t have a Lily to decorate the right way. So talented!

I wish my “porches” looked like those, too. My 5-year-old decorated our house, too. We’d pulled out the box of stuff and were outside thinking it was awfully quiet inside. After a little while we went in to check what was happening and she said, “It’s nearly done. I pumpkined it up for you!” She did a good job too! (She wasn’t waiting for the house to be picked up either, which would have held me off for weeks.) I’m going to let her do the Christmas decorating too, I think.

Salivating for Fantasy Open House Old Homes…

Can I borrow Lily?! She is cute *and* helpful. I’m afraid my ambitious Halloween house decorating plans are just that: Ambitious, and plans (there’s always next year…). In my mind, my house was going to look like that Country Living pic at the top of your post. In reality: Not so much so. I took pics of my meager attempts this weekend. I’ll post this week. Maybe I can crop them to make them look better or something. ;-)

Fifi–
The Hooked on House Tours party doesn’t have to have anything to do with Halloween. It’s just a house tour like before and you can show whatever you want. I’m sure some people will show houses with fall or Halloween decor, but it’s not necessary!

Everyone–
Lily is so happy you like her decorations! Your kind comments have made her day. -Julia :-)
