Try This at Home: Top 10 Trends for Spring

by hookedonhouses on April 1, 2008

#1: Colorful quilts. The more color and patterns in your bedding the better (via Country Porch). The days of boring minimalism in the bedroom are finally over. No more matchy-matchy!

#2: Bird feet. We’ve seen a lot of birds in decor the last few years, but trendspotters are declaring that they’re ”out” for 2008. The new trend? Just the feet, which makes more of a statement. How cool are these? This set was cast in pewter and then covered in gold. (Sold by Rare Device. Via DesignBoner.)

#3: Cows. Bovines are gonna be big for Spring, especially when incorporated into classic furniture as shown here (by Rodolpho Rochetti, via Desire to Inspire):

#4: Wallpaper. We’ve already talked about how wallpaper is back, and with a vengeance. The hottest patterns harken back to the 70s in vivid oranges, browns, and yellows (from Adeline’s Shabby Cottage):

#5: Curtains with ruffles and bows. We’ve done the minimal modern thing. Now we’re swinging back in the other direction and appreciating softer lines, more feminine shapes. Jonathan Adler’s new collection showcases this fresh new look perfectly (via Lloyd Co):

#6: Retro Lighting. Designs inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and Cracker Barrel are making a comeback (via C&J Electric):

#7: Send in the Clowns. Clown paintings are the thing to have on your walls this Spring to inject a bright dose of happiness into your home (the clown theme will also carry over into fashion and makeup trends by summer, mark my words!). How can you not smile when you wake up to clowns? Or, in the case of the sad clown, you’ll be inspired to think more deeply and ponder the meaning of life. Cuz if a clown is sad, what does that mean for the rest of us mortals who don’t have to make people happy for a living? Ooh, I just gave myself chills. (Clown paintings found here and here).

#8: Pink Woodwork. A trend that never really went away, but it’ll be bigger than ever this year (via JSN post)!

#9: Mantel Linens. That’s right. They’re like wigs for your fireplace. If your mantel is bare, it’s like your wood is bald (linens via Touch of Class):

#10: Decorative Toilet Seats. Let’s face it. Toilet seats have been ignored for far too long in interior design. This is their year!  Your toilet seat should reflect your style, your personality, and your taste (via BedBathStore, UniqueDecor, and Unique Chic Gallery, which offers handpainted seats for home stagers, to help them sell homes faster–something to consider if your house is on the market!):

Got me! Thanks.

Good grief, I thought you’d seriously lost your freaking mind!

Gawd that stuff is awful, my mother would love it……….

You had me going for a while as I agonized over the ruffled curtains, but it was the Cracker Barrel reference that finally caused the lightbulb to come to life(light). Put all those design trends together and see what you get…..a listing our office has for sale right now. They even have the teal carpet and vertical blinds to set the mood. Waiting for the buyer with the shoulder pads and big hair to show up!!

I am going to get the bright yellow for the kitchen. It is as glam as Jennifer Lopez’ nursery and takes me back to the time when Clowns were not only “in” but interacting with yellow and bronze fridges.

6 maya 04.01.08 at 11:12 am

Ha ha! I was sitting here thinking you had lost your MIND and then I remembered what day it is! :)

7 Beth 04.01.08 at 11:40 am

Ack! You had me going until the cow couch. I cringed at the bright quilt and thought “NOT in my house!” when I saw the bird feet…but I feel that way about the whole birds…

But when I saw those cow faces…egads… Good job! I can’t believe you found so many good pictures, and that someone is actually trying to SELL this stuff!

8 Kayjay 04.01.08 at 11:43 am

Ooooh, what a relief! I was getting more depressed with each picture. I’ve been there and done that and have no inclination to do it ever again. You got me!

9 Andrea 04.01.08 at 12:10 pm

You got me to the very end. As I read throuh I was thinking, ‘I just don’t think I could do this no matter how popular it got.’ I was also thinking about how open minded you must be to actually be able to find something positive to say about each trend. I was picturing the cow couch alongside your new black bench and pillows.

Very funny.

Hooked on…humor!

I can’t believe it kept building and building, clear up to the toilet-seat Grand Finale.

Happy 4/1/08!

okay…I’ll admit it…you had me going till the bitter end. And I do mean bitter :-) . That was hilarious. I was thinking, “Okay, apparently I’m not as fashion-forward as I thought I was, because I HATE all of this!” too funny. thanks for stopping by Nesting Instincts - and same to you…I think your blog is fab!!

12 Lynn 04.01.08 at 4:47 pm

I found your site on “Nesting Place.” I love it. Someone else that loves looking at homes. That’s my hobby. I’ve a found a few friends homes.

Thank you for all the neat ideas.

You had me until the wallpaper. I knew in my heart that no one would willingly return to the olive and orange coffee grinder wallpaper. (I am ashamed to admit that though I wasn’t crazy about the photo, I got excited that “colorful quilts” might be a trend. Somedays the starkness of my white Heavenly Bed is overpowering in its cloudness.)

14 Aubrey 04.01.08 at 10:42 pm

Okay I’m dumb. I got all the way to the painted toilet seats before I realized you were being really sarcastic and it slowly dawned on me the reason for it. I was extremely concerned that those designs were coming back!

15 JLB 04.01.08 at 10:57 pm

OMG!!! I totally fell for it. I was like I think she got hit in the head at her kid’s t-ball game or something this stuff is vile!! Then it dawned on me it’s April!. Thanks for the laugh.

16 JLB 04.01.08 at 10:58 pm

I have a great idea for a post for you. I will e-mail it later. (at least I think it is great)

17 JLB 04.01.08 at 11:02 pm

I didn’t like the pic of the quilts and I have never liked quilts in general, but I have recently began to like them more. My partner’s mother has gotten into quilting and she made us a really elegant one for christmas (yes an elegant quilt) I think they can be great especially if they have a personal meaning.

18 hookedonhouses 04.01.08 at 11:10 pm

Hey, JLB. I like quilts, too. My husband’s grandmother made a lot of them for her grandchildren that are family heirlooms. I just didn’t care for all the colors and patterns in this pic much. However, I had to choose something that wasn’t TOO “out there” for the top of the post. Didn’t want to give it away until you all clicked onto the second page and saw those hideous bird feet. I thought if they didn’t give it away, the cow couch certainly would. Ha.

I love that you all take me so seriously! I had no idea. I’m feeling very powerful now. I hope no one ran out and bought a sad clown painting before reading the end of the post…

You all shouldn’t feel stupid if you were fooled. Even my own mother says she believed it, and she knows me better than anyone! -Julia :-)

How lame am I? I get my only April Fools joke the day after the fact! I was a little frightened by the quilt, but the moment I saw the birds feet I was laughing. VERY funny!

20 Meredith 04.02.08 at 8:30 am

Since I’m reading this on Wednesday, I forgot all about April Fool’s, and you had me going from the get-go. One horror after another. All I could think was “maybe I can sell that God-awful lamp of my late Mother-in-law’s that’s been in the attic for 15 years.” Great post as always, Julia. Look forward to you every day. Looks like I’m stuck with the lamp.

21 Linda macDonald 04.02.08 at 11:09 am

What a hoot! I am fairly new here, so I was seriously doubting your trends sources (and judgement!!)…The first photo had me incredulous, thinking who in their right mind (or of this era) would put that quilt on their bed? Thanks for the laugh!!

22 Melissa @ The Inspired Room 04.05.08 at 4:39 pm

Ha! I am totally behind on blog reading but this was HILARIOUS!

YOU HAD ME GOING THERE for a bit and I was worried for you!

Happy day,
melissa

23 Melanie 05.02.08 at 3:07 pm

Since I am reading this on May 3rd, I was seriously worried about my new favorite blog. But when I got to the pink familiy room, it all became CLEAR!! Very funny. My April Fools joke this year was from an airline pilot! I ALWAYS end up flying on April 1st.
