It’s only a few more hours now until we learn who HGTV’s Next Design Star is going to be. Click here to see who got more votes in our poll. It’ll be interesting to see if the rest of America voted the same way.
While we wait, I thought we’d take a look back at the first two winners: David Bromstad and Kim Myles. They were both given their own design shows on HGTV, and both of their shows have been renewed for next season. So apparently people are still watching them.
Are you? If so, what’s your take on David’s “Color Splash” and Kim’s “Myles of Style”? Which is your favorite?
Do you think either Matt Locke or Jennifer Bertrand can top these two?

I have a hard time taking Kim Myles too seriously after watching her organize a homeowner’s books by color. If my books were organized by color I’d never find anything! I suppose if you just have books for decoration it would be okay, but I actually READ mine.
If anyone wants to see what Tori’s talking about, you can do a search on my blog for a post I did a while back called “A Rainbow of Books: Organizing by Color.” (Search box is in the upper right corner of this page) I have a picture of it. People definitely felt strongly about whether or not organizing books this way is a good idea or not! -J
I watch Vern Yipp’s Deserving Design & Cartar O’s show.
I love David’s show, but I have to admit, I don’t think I’ve actually watched it since we left California. I’ve moved so often that I remember things by where I lived when I saw it, did it, etc. It’s sick. Anyway. I’ve never watched Kim’s show. Ever. Not that I don’t like her… I just haven’t been interested enough to look for it!
When I catch David’s show, I love what he does…he really does gorgeous work, but it’s not stuff that I can ever look at and say, “Oh, I can do that!” kwim?
I have never caught Kim’s show. I kind of like the idea of organizing books by color, lol, might be easier on the eyes, I know I prefer my closet to be that way, not that I keep up with it all of the time though.
I think I could watch Jennifer’s show, just because her style is fun and attainable.
I like Matt, but I am not into minimalism, so I am not sure I would find his show very interesting, but who knows…if he gets a show they might try to tweak it to attract people who have different styles than his.

PS: Anyone watching the new show on at 10pm?
I watch both David & Kim’s shows, and I like them both! They each have their own special flair…David’s so artistic and great with colors, and Kim comes up with really unique, money-saving ideas for things like light fixtures and artsy features. David seems to be one of the nicest guys on the planet. Kim…I like her…but still haven’t been able to determine if the Kim we’re seeing on TV is the real Kim or not. Can’t put my finger on what it is…but regardless…I still enjoy both their shows. I think that if Jen gets a show and really steps out in her art, she could compete. I don’t really see Matt competing with them…although I also think he’s one of the nicest guys ever. I have to confess…I didn’t vote! I was too underwhelmed by both of them, I didn’t know what to do. Pathetic, huh?
No.
HI! My blog address has changed slightly, http://sanctuaryart.blogspot.com/ but I am slowly up and running again now that our computer is back on line. Can’t wait to see all of your posts I missed! Jen R
Hey! I just saw you on the WordPress home page! Congratulations!
I was never impressed by David and have only caught the last few minutes of his show when I’m waiting to watch whatever is on afterward. I watched Kim’s show a few times and then stopped watching. I find her annoying.
I had a feeling who would win tonight and I was right. I’ll explain my theory in a later post when I won’t be worried about spoilers.
I prefer to watch David’s show…..for reasons that have nothing to do with his design skills and everything to do with the fact that he’s usually sleeveless and often shirtless.
Yes, I can be that shallow in my TV viewing. It explains why I watched Smallville, too.
Seriously though, I do like both of their work, but I find David’s show to be a bit better.
You know, I like a lot of what Kim Myles does, but somehow her personality and speaking voice changed since she was on Design Star — for the worse. Now, she sounds so know-it-all which I find very unappealing. Plus, what’s with the goofy intro to her show? They have her dancing around like she’s some sort of kid. Doesn’t go with the way she presents herself (as a grown up designer who knows everything) on the show.
Oh this is a fun blog. I found it thru Fiff’s blog.
We love watching HGTV and I love Davids show. Being an Artist I love to watch what he creates as an Art piece. I learn alot about painting styles thru Danielle too. I dont always like what he creates but I love to see how he gets there.
Kim’s show isnt one I watch much at all. I cant pin point why. It’s just not as interesting to me. I was glad to see Jennifer win this year. Will be interesting to see what kind of show she has.
I need to see if you still have the Father of the Bride house on here. I loved that house.
Well, I don’t have a problem with David except that he really needs to say the words “I’m Gay” on the air, because women are really dillusional about him. It’s like when everyone was shocked that Liberace was gay and I knew the minute I saw him at the age of 5 LOL Everyone needs to refresh their gay-dar
Kim… I could care less either way.
I like both Kim and David. I admit I watch David more. He is easier to find. I love his original artwork.
I really like David the best, he is so funny, sweet, and his designs are always beautiful. Also even though I am a retired grandma, and great grandma, he is so easy to look at!
