For Sale: The London Townhouse from Howards End

Howards End London House exterior

Monday I showed you the ivy-covered cottage from the classic Merchant-Ivory film Howards End. Today we’re taking a look at another property from the movie: 6 Wickham Place. This is where the Schlegel sisters, played by Emma Thompson and Helena Bonham-Carter, lived.

According to the London House Hound, who writes the real-estate blog BrickWork, Wickham Place–which is actually 6 Victoria Square, just north of Victoria Station–is on the market for £3,250,000. Here’s how the house looked in the film:

In the movie, the Schlegel sisters were born and raised here. Sadly, they lose the house because the lease had run out and the landlord has plans to tear it down and replace it with “modern” flats.

A photo of the house today from the real estate listing:

How the room appeared in the movie:

It looks like the dining room (shown in the real estate listing) was walled off to enlarge another room on the other side of it:

The dining room in the film is larger and appears to have been filmed in a different part of the house (or on a set):

The bedroom and bath shown in the listing are updated and modern:

Thanks to London House Hound for letting me know about this listing.

What a fabulous home, and in London no less. If I were to select a dream house to live in it would be just such a townhome in the center of a large city. (Like Mrs. Limestone’s house!!)
Thanks for sharing and I always enjoy revisiting movies through your eyes!

Pretty house inside and out :-) I’m surprised by how bright & light the interior is. I really like the crown moulding and then ceiling detail in the living room.

When you say “townhouse” in the U.S., it connotes a glorified apartment. In England, it means a classy house with fabulous architecture. This home is truly lovely.

BTW, my husband and I called this movie “Howards Endless” because it was SO long.

THANK YOU for doing my favourite movie of all time.I loved their apartment interior more than howards end.

If I had a spare 5 or 6 million dollars, I’d snap that up. It’s so beautiful, though the upstairs is decorated ghastly. And that dining room! Ick. Where’s the character? This house needs me! ;)

Another great find! I’ve also learned something about myself; one of the commenters above just mentioned the word “elegant”. It suddenly dawned on me that I’m not in the least bit elegant which is probably why I don’t resonate much with elegant homes, but do love cosy/folk/country style homes of whatever size. Thanks, Julia!

As soon as I saw your title, I thought…Ooh, I loved that house. This was one of the movies, and I did like the movie, when I paid more attention to the background details. The marble counter in the bathroom is wonderful.

Oh, I think I’d be quite content there. :-) I love that bathroom. Not too big (I really don’t love huge bathrooms…probably because I’m the slob that has to clean them! Just seems like a waste of space…) and this one is luxe without being over-the-top. I’ll take it!!

I love these peaks into movie set homes! I love how grand and cozy the house looks in the movie more so then it’ modern day look..but I suppose that all has to do with ‘movie magic’.

Either way, what a beautiful townhouse- London homes really do have such a unique look.

Howard’s End os one of my favorite movies. I can’t imagine how wonderful it would be to live in such a place, anyplace like that, with the architecture, decorations, and history. One would never want to leave and go to work, or the market, or anywhere.. for that matter. I would be a most happy hermit.

I’m greatly enjoying your posts about houses on movies. I think that houses over there are just gorgeous, just look at those trim works, ceilings, walls and paint. I’m seeing some pretty ornate details anywhere i look!

26 David July 1, 2011 at 10:08 am

Fun to see the real house, thank you for posting. Just for accuracy’s sake, in the movie and Forster’s book, the Schlegel family is forced to move out of the Wickham Place house not because they couldn’t afford it, but because the lease had run out and the landlord would not renew. The house was to be torn down and replaced with “modern” flats.

27 hookedonhouses July 1, 2011 at 10:35 am

Thanks, David–I corrected it.
