What Are They Doing in These Real Estate Photos?

by hookedonhouses on June 8, 2010

guy in living rm-MO listingI’m always baffled when real estate agents photograph people inside the rooms that they’re trying to sell. This is a prime example. Who is that guy, and why is he in the room? It’s distracting.

baby in high chairCute baby. Does he come with the house? At least we can see the room that they’re selling in this photo, though. So how to explain this one, of nothing but the homeowner’s dog?

dog in mls photo

Remember the Realtor who took a photo of herself in a bedroom mirror? She strikes again:

realtor in mirror 2This time she gets extra points off for leaving the toilet seat open and showing us inside the bowl…

Elvis in the house

Frankly, Elvis should have left the building.

(Thanks to the readers who sent me these photos! You guys find the craziest stuff. If you come across something funny in the real estate listings, you can send it to me here.)

Oh my gosh, those are great. I used to have a dog that looked just like that. At least that picture is cuter than the open toilet seat. lol

I <3 your blog!

What is wrong with people! One thing that always bothers me in MLS photos is when they photograph the bathroom with the toilet lid up…really is it that difficult to put the lid down? These pictures are crazy! AND why oh why would a person not at least attempt to "stage" or clean up a home they were trying to sell. When I have sold my houses in the past I have spent weeks decluttering and making it looks as good as possible. If I had any dirty laundry when we had a showing I would put my dirty clothes baskets in my car and take it with me….maybe I am a little to passionate about selling and buying real estate, but shouldn't your agent be? :D

Yikes, did I rant or what?
Again thanks for your blog, I enjoy it greatly.

7 Nichole June 8, 2010 at 9:36 am

Why don’t people fire their agents? Although I guess in each case, the sellers didn’t do much to get their homes ready. Maybe they deserve each other! My sister in law is house hunting currently, and I couldn’t believe the blurry photos of one of the houses. Apparently, the owner is quite sick and needs to sell. You would think the agent would try a bit harder. Thanks for the laugh, Julia. :)

Oh, you can just see the pride beaming from the homeowner in that first photo: “This is my MAN CAVE!!!” I’ll bet he was there for each and every showing too! Sellers, PLEASE LEAVE THE HOME DURING SHOWINGS! Before we bought our home we were interested in another but the couple insisted on being home both times we came. The first time the man talked to us and the second time he sat at the table and ate a tuna fish sandwich while watching Gunsmoke! It’s a little difficult to discuss the pros and cons (especially the CONS) while the owner is sitting right there. Also, it was impossible to imagine ourselves and our stuff in the home with the couple there.

I don’t know about funny, but this one is kind of sad and head scratching. It’s a foreclosure in our neighborhood, and look at the carpet in the bedroom pics. The previous owners left their animals in the house for months after it was foreclosed on. The bank/agent hasn’t done anything to the house, including cleaning the pet stained carpets!

Could be a cute house

Oh my! That’s really sad. That house has to smell awful. Plus, the toilets are disgusting.
We saw a house we really liked once, we called it the “pee house”. Seriously, we were too scared that we wouldn’t be able to get the dog smell out, so we didn’t buy it.

I am always amazed that they show houses in pics and on tv with the commode seat up. Mine is only up when in use. This is the first place Ive seen were its agreed thats a bad idea. No one else seems phased by it.

Brandy–
That’s one of my pet peeves! Take a second to put the toilet lid down before you take that photograph, please. No one wants to see that. -Julia

17 Janet June 8, 2010 at 12:55 pm

LOL those are priceless! But I do have questions….does the man come in the living room?
Likewise are they including either the baby or the dog? Both are really cute.
Elvis I’ll pass on, thank you very much.

18 April June 8, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Oh my goodness, these are good for a laugh, but I don’t see how pictures like these would sell a house. I do have to admit though, Elvis is pretty funny, maybe he thought he would appeal to other Elvis fans out there and sell his house quicker.

22 Beckie June 8, 2010 at 1:51 pm

I get so put out with the folks on HGTV when they show houses that include open toilet bowls, etc. Shouldn’t agents just step a head before the cameras & clients walk into the bathrooms? I had an embarrassing episode when we had our home on the market. One Sat, we came home from an outing to find a business card on the counter to let us know that a realtor had been there (before cell phone era). That was fine, until I opened the basement door, to find that my hubby had thrown his underwear down the steps (toward) the laundry before we left. I WAS MORTIFIED! Now, 30 yrs later, I would be just as mortified, but hubby never repeated that scenario!

It’s a pet peeve of mine that people don’t care about taking good pictures, when comes time to selling their homes or they have too much clutter. I mean how hard is it to take good pictures really? Even I could do a better job then most of these people and I’m not a professional. Think about how many more homes would sell if a homeowner fires their bad realtor and gets a better one, or if they themselves aren’t good at taking pictures, hire a professional, or if they have clutter, get rid of it or put into storage. It really isn’t that hard, but people just don’t care and it drives me nuts. Thanks for sharing these with us.

32 FrenchGardenHouse June 8, 2010 at 4:30 pm

If it was only that there are people in the shots, that would be bad enough. What’s really annoying is that those have to be the WORST ever shots of any home. Who on earth would want to buy any of these homes? yikes.

Faux-Elvis should of put down the Twinkies long before he left the building.

I always wonder how many bad RE pix are of tenants and not owners. Although there is no excuse for looking into an open terlit.

The Guy in the first photo I can almost hear him saying.. “This is my BIG SCREEN TV and this is my LEATHER COUCH to watch it on” So true the MAN CAVE comment.. LOL these are priceless and if you hadn’t told me they were MLS photos I would have never guessed it.. The baby is cute patootie though… LOL
