DIY Help in the Palm of Your Hand (& iPod Giveaway!)

by hookedonhouses on October 12, 2009

itouchDo you have an iPod yet? I’m what they call a “late adopter” when it comes to technology, so I just got my first one–a new iTouch that you can put photos, music, and videos on, browse the Internet from, and download all kinds of helpful applications for. I was contacted by DuPont last week and asked to try their new mySurface app on the iPod that they sent me to see what I thought.

mysurface samples

The mySurface app is simple to download, and it’s free. It’s also easy to use (if I can do it, anyone can!). It has a gallery of Corian and Zodiaq surface colors and textures you can look through to see what you like. Or compare them to counters you come across at a friend’s house or during a home tour to find the closest match! You can save your favorites, share them with others via e-mail, and request samples.

I need to replace my kitchen countertops, so this app has been really helpful for me to see what various options would look like in the room.

mysurface DuPont Corian sagebrush

DuPont has given me an iTouch to give away to one of my lucky readers! I think you’ll love it. You’ll be able to download fun, free apps like mySurface and try them for yourself.

  • Enter by leaving a comment on this post before Saturday, October 17, 2009.
  • For an extra entry, leave a second comment telling me what your favorite DIY app is, if you have one, or tell us the type of app you think would be helpful to decorators and DIYers. (For example, I would love to have an app with paint colors so I wouldn’t have to carry around a purse full of paint chips all the time!)

Several of my blog friends are hosting iPod giveaways this week, including Amy of Living Locurto and The Remodeling Guy. Go and enter theirs, too, if you want to increase your chances of winning one! Please note that DuPont provided these iPods so that we could try the mySurface app, and they support full disclosure (WOMMA).

I would love an Ipod touch! My husband has one and I can not lay a finger on it! It would be great to have one full of DIY project ideas and apps. I am dying to put a backsplash in my kitchen but just haven’t found the time/money/gumption. Maybe now I will get my act in gear!!

OMG…I can’t even imagine all that I could do with an Iphone….I would love to have one to have pictures of all my fabrics…in my home. I am constantly buying fabrics to try and it would be fantastic to have pictures of samples of what I already have….to help feed my fabric addiction, of course! Since I love to paint, I would definitely use the Benjamin Moore app.!

Amy October 15, 2009 at 7:51 pm

I am constantly amazed at the complexity and usefulness of the newest applications for the Itouch and Iphones. This one is really nifty, we’re soon to move (Spring of this coming year) and I fully intend on making use of every single DIY and home decorating software I can find because facing five years in grad school I’m going to need a REALLY good looking room with four walls to stare at for hours at a time!
.-= Amy´s last blog ..Snow White Costume =-.

Amy October 15, 2009 at 7:53 pm

I think it would be really nifty if they could come out with something like that music app (where you hold your phone up to the music and it tells you what song it is) where you could snap a picture of a color or pattern and it would locate the closest match in local or online stores. It’s wishful thinking but I think it’d be really neat!

I would love an App to organize my home wish list. You could take a picture(or) download one of something you covet. Of course you would need to have a spot to put all the details, price, ect.

Hi Julia

I have been following your blog now for months and I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy it. I have to admit this post caught my eye. I have a Mac lover since the first Macintosh came out in 1984 and I have been using them ever since. I have never owned an iPod though, so I would be thrilled if my name was pulled out of your virtual hat.

Thanks again for the great blog.

What a generous giveaway! It’s quite amazing! Technologically behind as always, and just love all the things it sounds like you can do with it!Love reading your blogs… since I too am “Hooked on Houses”! Lol.

Alyssa October 16, 2009 at 12:08 am

Hi! would love to enter your iphone giveaway.

I just found your website and I am OBSESSED WITH IT!!!! Amazing job. I didn’t realize I was so “hooked on houses” but they are my passion and I love every aspect of building, decorating, flipping, investing, buying, selling, living….i guess you could say i’m Hooked!! Thanks for all your great photos.

Oh and my favorite DIY app – without a doubt – is the iphone “level”. it’s a level that helps you hang pics, shelves, etc evenly. I cant tell you how many times i’ve used it. it’s simple but essential.

Karen October 16, 2009 at 12:12 am

Ok, well I don’t know if I should even admit this . . but I don’t even have a cell phone:) But I do love learning new things and I’ve taught myself (with help from my nephew early on) so much computer ‘stuff’. So why not an i-touch? Like you said Julia – if you can do it, then so can I! (thanks for the opportunitiy:)

Karen October 16, 2009 at 12:17 am

So the app I would love to see if one that gives advice for ‘problem’ houses – i.e. weird layouts of exteriors (like mine – everybody goes to my side door, thinking it is the front door). There would be sketches, or actual pictures, of the less than perfect house and then maybe a series of three or four solutions, pictures and how-to’s included. Maybe there is already one out there!

I think an app that would let you enter your room dimensions and furniture measurements and then “rearrange” the layout would be amazing. I’m sure there’s an app for that!

Crystal October 16, 2009 at 6:08 am

Your blog is great, I am a late adopter too as I am just now getting really hooked on reading all these great blogs and who knows, maybe someday will create my own. My favorite app on my hubby’s iphone is Pandora. i have never been good at remembering musical artists and this helps me expand my horizon. It’d be cool to have a similiar one for Decor, if you like that then you might like this idea. I see some blogs have that feature too. Would be great for paint and fabric.

Kristin L P October 16, 2009 at 10:47 am

I was not a blog reader before this year but I have really become attached to yours. I’m excited for the new changes to come. I have put a hold on my home redecorating because after painting our living/dining room with a beautiful green color that turns a horrible green color when the lights are turned on, I’m just outright terrified of doing that again. I’ve been in the house for a little over a year so decorating is new to me, but I have always adored homes and that I why I enjoy the sneak peak into others. An Ipod touch would be great for decorating resources and experimenting with different designs before commiting. No more can commitment worries!! I would want an app that would let me do furniture layouts for my floorplan!!

I WANT AN ITOUCH AND I WANT ONE NAAAOOOWWWWW :D :D :D !!!!!

Natalie October 16, 2009 at 4:47 pm

I own an itouch but the battery on it is gone. I can only use it without it being docked for maybe 10 min max. I don’t know what’s up with it, it’s barely a year old. I totally love it and recommend it to anybody. I also had an iPhone for a month before returning it (poor reception in my area and the battery didn’t last a day, :( I miss the apps on it though). Some of fav apps on the itouch are Pandora internet radio (because it is docked all the time it’s an app I use a lot. I make stations of my fav artists and listen away). Since I homeschool and move around a ton (every 6 months with 4 kids) I don’t know much about decorating (that’s why I love blogs and sites to help me in this respect when I do need a decorator’s touch) and don’t have a fav DIY app. I think the lever tool is awesome for decorators and so is the Mysurface. I think everyone else mentioned the same thing I’d love to see as a great useful app-to take a picture of a room and get instant decorating ideas. i do the choosing and tweaking. Time saver. Fair enough?

oh btw, just to share some of my little opinion here…
my favourite app would be MySpace out of all. Why? because i have always imagine how my dream home would be in the future. So one of my hobby include browsing through magazine looking at how their idea of design.

Browsing is one thing, to formulate an idea is another challenge. With this apps, this is made possible!! great!! Simply by just choosing the fav colour, fav texture etc. formulate the idea, and save…walaa~my idea of dream home is 50% done!!

the other 50%?? Have an iTouch in hand and try out the app!!! =p

Great giveaway, great site, great content and great idea from the developer…superb!!

i’m not sure which apps even exist, but anything dealing with color swatches is always helpful. another thing that would be helpful is something that can find similar or complementary colors between different brands.

I have a sick feeling in my stomach, and ache for this place. I don’t understand it. I live in calif. my family is from texas and new orleans and I have never been in N.C. anyway, I signed up for the camera ,phone……..????? I am old sick alone and miserable, even more so now that this house is plastered in my head. anyway thanx for listening. I am in love with that house…………….glo

Gloria–
Oh, I know, it’s so sad that that house is falling into the ocean. I need to do an updated post about it. I read that it was recently named a “public nuisance,” which means it must be either moved or taken down. Such a shame! -Julia

me……….I don’t know how to work it, am sick and want to make an eletronic scrapbook, before I pass. don’t know how long I have. I was supposed to only make it 2 or 3 years, about 16 years ago. I just know how it hurts to love someone and cannot do that to my loved ones. so here I stay, every nite thinking this is it, but ain’t I lucky. I have the sweetest schnauzer, and I want to take a few decent pics of us to save for all times. I just need something that makes me look good at arms length. god, I loved that house in rodanthe, when we went inside I got shivers and chills that I had something very intimate to do with that house. I have never been there. oh, well, here I am, old sick obsessed. but happy…

Funny I must be destined to read your blog…two separate things that I pulled up today. Both entry’s lead me to I guess both of your blogs? I love houses too. I would love to win the IPod touch. But even still I enjoyed reading your blog and keep up the great work!
Heather
