DIY Help in the Palm of Your Hand (& iPod Giveaway!)

by hookedonhouses on October 12, 2009

itouchDo you have an iPod yet? I’m what they call a “late adopter” when it comes to technology, so I just got my first one–a new iTouch that you can put photos, music, and videos on, browse the Internet from, and download all kinds of helpful applications for. I was contacted by DuPont last week and asked to try their new mySurface app on the iPod that they sent me to see what I thought.

mysurface samples

The mySurface app is simple to download, and it’s free. It’s also easy to use (if I can do it, anyone can!). It has a gallery of Corian and Zodiaq surface colors and textures you can look through to see what you like. Or compare them to counters you come across at a friend’s house or during a home tour to find the closest match! You can save your favorites, share them with others via e-mail, and request samples.

I need to replace my kitchen countertops, so this app has been really helpful for me to see what various options would look like in the room.

mysurface DuPont Corian sagebrush

DuPont has given me an iTouch to give away to one of my lucky readers! I think you’ll love it. You’ll be able to download fun, free apps like mySurface and try them for yourself.

  • Enter by leaving a comment on this post before Saturday, October 17, 2009.
  • For an extra entry, leave a second comment telling me what your favorite DIY app is, if you have one, or tell us the type of app you think would be helpful to decorators and DIYers. (For example, I would love to have an app with paint colors so I wouldn’t have to carry around a purse full of paint chips all the time!)

Several of my blog friends are hosting iPod giveaways this week, including Amy of Living Locurto and The Remodeling Guy. Go and enter theirs, too, if you want to increase your chances of winning one! Please note that DuPont provided these iPods so that we could try the mySurface app, and they support full disclosure (WOMMA).

Julia, I don’t know much about the iTouch, like you I am a little behind in the world of technology. But if I could have an app it would be to take a picture of a room and get instant decorating ideas. Also, it would have an option so I could take a picture of something I am considering to buy for that room and it would incorportate it into the room picture. Then, I could see if I liked it. Can that sort of thing be done? Or is it like wishing to fly?
What a fun entry!

I would like an application for a complimentary color app. For example you take a picture of a color and then the app would come up with colors that would look great with that wall or pillow or whatever it is that you would like to incorporate into your room.

They also have an app that is a level- which i thought was pretty cool.

I think a cool app for a decorator would be one that you could take a picture of a color and it would match it to an existing paint color and then would give yous suggestions on color combination’s that would go with that color. I don’t know if an app could do all that but I would love to see one try. Hope I win and thanks for the great sight and contest. Have a great day!

My app idea (and maybe this is an app, but I don’t have an ipod, so I wouldn’t know): Download a picture of a room and make color changes to match what you see when you are out and about. So if you are at home depot and you see a beautiful Behr “grey timber wolf” paint chip, and you want to see what it would look like on cabinets you can click the color and click on the cabinets in the picture and see what you think. There is something like this on the Sherwin-Williams website under Color Visualizer.

Ooooooh, I’d love to have an iPod Touch. Dh would be soooooo jealous. If I could have a decorating app, I’d like one where you could download photos of your rooms and then when shopping for furniture, you take photos of those and place it in the photo of the room so you can see if it will look right/fit in your space. How cool would that be? It could also work for paint color, curtains, blinds, etc. I’d also like one that allows you to take a photo of a paint color and it figures out the mix, so you can take it to the store and get the exact color you want.

I think a great app would be one where you could enter the dimensions of a room and have it create a little scale model with your pieces of furniture in it. Then when you are shopping and spot a piece of furniture you could use your finger to drag your furniture around your little scale model room and rearrange things and see how the new piece would fit in.

I don’t have an “i” anything either. I was going to suggest what Mom in High Heels and others said. I want to shop for all kinds of stuff and see how it would look in my rooms in pictures that I’ve uploaded. Not just to see what it looks like but also to get the proportions right. I have a big problem with size and proportion when it comes to furniture. But I also like the idea of paint colors. But it would show up in pictures of my rooms, right? Not just as chips?

Maybe this already exists….I’m a technologically challenged person but it’d be nice to see an app that allows you to create a – oh what’s it called?- story board? Something that will show everything you have in one room together on one “board” with your own photos. That way if you want to go pillow shopping you’ll be able to look at your furniture pieces, rug, wall color, etc and pick out appropriate pillows (just as an example…I often have trouble remembering exact colors).

Also, the app I’d love to see would be a garden design tool with a plant encyclopedia that would let me limit the plants just to things that grow in my climate, and a plant identifier to help me figure out what I’ve already got. I’m always scribbling stuff on the backs of receipts I find in the bottom of my purse, and when I get home I don’t remember what the plants looked like, or what conditions they prefer, so it would be nice to be able to choose them from the encyclopedia while I’m out plant-shopping and place them in my garden design–kind of like what Mom in High Heels suggested, but for plants. :-)

I think the app ColorSutra would be great for DIYer and Decorators. This is what the site says about it:

colorSutra takes the guesswork out of matching colors.

Ever wonder how professional designers create great color combinations every time? This fun application makes this incredibly easy: just pick a color from a color wheel, or sample it with the iPhone camera. colorSutra will automatically give you the colors that match.
You can save your colors for later, so you can access them while picking items that fit your color scheme. This is useful for shopping, color-coordinating your clothes, interior decorating, designing web sites. The possibilities are endless…
Design professionals have the option to display hex, RGB and CMYK values of the colors. This feature is enabled in iPhone settings under colorSutra tab.

Well add me to the list of Ipod-less people. I too love the idea of a paint chip app. It would be neat to be able to take a picture of one of your rooms and then have the app match a paint color in the furnishings or something like that. Love your site!!

I can’t use Apps yet since I have an Ipod Nano. But here are some I would love… paint color matcher that would tell you what colors are similar in the different paint lines, fabric app that would show you the different fabrics in a line and the different color groups, paint quantity estimator (I’m sure there are plenty of these), and antique/collector price estimator so when I’m at an antique store I can know what the going price is on an item.

I have a shuffle for running, a Blackberry for work, and my hubby has an Touch. I’m the last person in the world who I thought would be geeked out. Between my new car (I thought I needed the Tech pack on that) turning on and off the rear wiper blades on its own and contantly talking to me, the amount I spend doing stuff on my new comp program for work, I’m kind of over it. The Touch is cool. They have a translation ap for foreign languages that is pretty cool. It speaks to you so you know exactly how to pronounce the word. You need to have wifi for it if you’re traveling. The I phone would work on cell. The Ben Moore paint ap is nice too.

There is so much that can be saved on an iPod and handy tools specific to an individual can be added. Having an iPod would opening up another avenue for me; with 75, 000 apps available for iPod, I could make it uniquely my own, taylored to my needs [once I learn how to use it, of course].

The new granite countertop is shown in the color I selected, the new tile is on the floor, the paint is on the wall, and the wall hanging/clock/etc is on the wall in the area I selected. No hassle buying, hanging, returning, ad nauseum that I seem to go through every time I make a decorating decision.

Helpful FYI to whoever wins…buy a protective cover for your ipod…my husband dropped his on the garage floor & the screen shattered (to fix it would cost almost as much as to buy a new one!)

Hi again, Julia. My second comment for the iPod Touch. I have a couple of ideas for DIY apps that would be useful for me: landscape planning to help figure out what plants to put where, and an interior space planning app that I could use for help in getting new cabinets/storage for my basement or for finding a new couch that will fit my living room. Maybe they exist already and I just don’t know yet since I don’t have an iPod Touch or iPhone!

Couldn’t believe how far I had to scroll down the comments to write one – I thought everyone in the world but me already had an iPod and an iPhone! I’d love to own one because I’m now carrying around a digital camera, an old MP3 player, a Filofax, a phone – and if I could, my laptop would be in my handbag, too! II feel I’m finally techno-fearless after years of feeling like a wimp or never seeming to be able to keep abreast of new developments. I’m ready for a digitally richer, less cluttered life. The advantage of me winning an iPod now would be that my teenage daughter would think I was supercool… and help me use it!

I’d love to see an app that made it really easy to log in all the dimensions of rooms and bits of furniture as well as exact paint sample examples and numbers.

I don’t have an iTouch (yet ; ) so I don’t know what sort of apps are available. But I think it would be great if you could upload photos of a room and then the app could recommend decorative touches based on your photo – complimentary furniture, drapes that match the wall color, etc. Not sure if that’s possible, I’m not very tech-savvy!

The paint chip app would be awesome. Also, one that would tell you what colors, fabrics, etc went together. I don’t “see” stuff like that very well…

I think a great DYI app. would be to have aerial dimensions of a rooms (for each of your rooms) to also create your room scapes with dimensions of existing furniture – then, when you’re out shopping/thrifting and see an AMAZING piece of furniture you can see if you actually have the space and/or a place for it at home.

I’d love to have an app where I could download a picture of my room and then change things like paint colors, furniture arrangements, window treatments, even moving walls. Remodeling virtually before staring the real mess. I suppose there is an app out there somewhere for the professionals but I’d like to have it on my very own i-pod.

Great giveaway! The app that I would love would be one where you can take a photo of your room and the furniture that you want into and then move the pieces around on an idea board. You know, you beam the phone at the piece of furniture and then move it around on your phone for a before and after effect? Just a thought. If this has been invented, I would love to hear about it. Thanks.

great giveaway!! count me in please~

juz my opinion about the apps:

1) most fav-BigOven
bcoz it’s really a daily torture thinking of what to cook for my dinner every single day!! Instead of carrying a recipe book and browse through it, i would prefer to check it out in my iTouch (if only i have one =p)
So for sure, if i own one iTouch, i definitely will get BigOven as my top priority

2) 2nd-mySurface
i just like browsing through housing design magazine, checking out their design and thinking what will it be the design for my future home. The main problem is, i can’t ‘record down’ the design that i want!! With this apps…it simply just so cool and handy, great job for the apps developer. (at least they understand the consumer’s need like me)

3)3rd-iHandyLevel
though i didn’t do nailing frequently but it will be very handy once i need it. great~

4) 4th-MilogLite
great apps esp when nowadays the fuel has increased price =.=

5) FilterFX for Free
Sorry to say that, this would be my personal least fav apps. Why?? bcoz i usually do that in my pc and upload it in home. I don’t have a phone or device that have that function so i don’t quite sure about that function. Sorry for that but im sure some other people might like it =p

anyhow, great job for all these DIY apps.

For extra credit, I have a few DIY apps to mention. Personally my favorite is the Handy Man Sidekick. It has calculators for figuring out how much paint, flooring, gardening materials, etc. you need based on the info you input. A friend of mine has this and I’m jealous b/c I still have to figure this out the old fashioned way.

Sherwin William’s ColorSnap lets you take a pic of anything with the iPhone camera and then it tells you the closest paint color in SW’s palette. I think Benjamin Moore offers something similar.

I read about something called Eden Garden Designer for the people who were looking for landscaping apps. The article said you take a picture of your garden, pick your zone and add plants so it sounds really handy. But I have never tried it / don’t know anyone who owns it so I can’t say for sure…

An app that I would love is a measuring tape. there have been plenty of times when I wish I would have a measuring tape in my purse when I find that desk, table, or chair that i would love, but want to measure. I know there is an app for leveling, but one to measure would be grand. Not sure how that can be made.

oh yea just to share my idea about MySurface application…
i think the developer simply just rocks!!most ppl flipping through home designing magazine having a lot of remodeling ideas at that time…but after an hour or two…totally have no idea about it anymore, not even the colour!!With this application…it simply just solve all the consumers’ trouble!! coz we can’t be writing down or maybe remember our favourite colour…but we can simply just browse through the iTouch and save up all the ideas we have at that particular moment!!

kudos to the developer. So if possible, send me an iTouch too so that i can try on this application and write a detail review of this great application!! haha…just kidding~

last but not least, good luck to all~cheers~
