Fantasy Open House: Old Homes Tour #3

by hookedonhouses on October 10, 2008

By JULIA @ HOOKEDONHOUSES.NET

Welcome to the third tour of this week’s Fantasy Open House in Terrace Park, Ohio. Today’s home is the oldest on the tour, built in 1830 by Joseph and Electra Highlands.

It originally had only four rooms–two up and two down, with fireplaces in each. Bathrooms, a modern kitchen, and additional bedrooms have been added more recently, more than doubling its size.

Come on in and look around!

Until recently, many generations of the Highland family lived here. Some of them had just stopped by to see the house when we arrived. I imagine they must’ve been very happy to see how well loved it still is today.

I hope you enjoyed this house as much as I did! Thanks to the owners who were gracious enough to volunteer their lovely home for the tour, and for allowing me to take photographs.

Come back tomorrow to see the largest home on the tour–a classic foursquare that was built in 1910 and has been beautifully renovated and remodeled.

Oh, I might feel a little too much responsibility living in a house that old–like it was my duty to preserve every little detail. And sometimes a girl like me likes to change the details…but not in an almost-200yo house.

Btw, a little-known fact about me: there was a time in my teens that I wanted to name my future daughter “Electra.” Juliet now thanks me for my change of mind. :)

Beautiful, but way too much blue for me.

Definetly a “family home” actually looks very lived in and loved.

I love how loved this house is. I love that it is a family home without taking away from the house. So beautiful.

I love these Williamsburg looking homes. Don’t know if I could live in one without turning all of that molding white but they are beautiful.
Thanks for the tour.

The light fixtures are fantastic. The exterior one (outside the kitchen door) has me drooling all over my key board. This tour has been wonderful.

Hi Julia,

Not at all my taste. But I so appreciate those that preserve the history of these old homes.

Have a lovely week-end, it’s going to be a 10 here in the NE. I am going to get out and enjoy and TRY for a little bit to ignore Wall Street UGH !!!

They have done a really great job of preserving the history of this house. It’s obvious they love and respect it.

This is absolutely gorgeous. I always admire anyone who rescues and preserves an old beauty like this one.

It’s not my style, but a very lovely house. I love the fact that they kept and repurposed one of the original windows.

But, HOW would one get through that tiny little door into the cellar? I realize that people were a bit smaller 200 years ago, but not *that* much!

Wow! The old houses have the coolest things in them. I love the old window above the fireplace in the dining room! Thanks for the tour :)

I really like the red front door and also how they decorated the mantel in the dining room – so simple and beautiful. Thanks for the tour!

i dont care for the houses you have to open a door to go upstairs. my family has had homes like this forever. i like a sweeping staircase type of effect. even if it is very little of a staircase. i didnt care for the tiny door near the fireplace would freak me out. we had doors like those to the attics when i was growing up in the upstairs bedrooms. i hated that door to this day. house is nice. but, lol NOT for me.

Omg. I freaking love that staircase with the door. Haha. It’s so weird looking I want one.
