PhotoStory Friday: Finding Design in D.C.

by hookedonhouses on August 8, 2008

Paula at Neutral Dwelling invited me to participate in today’s PhotoStory Friday and Design, in which everyone posts pictures related to design found in architecture, fabrics, etc., and I immediately knew what I wanted to show you.

When we were at the Lincoln Memorial in D.C. last month, my son Jake took this photo while standing between two of the pillars and looking up at the ceiling. I never noticed how beautiful the details were in it before. He took lots of “architectural” pictures like this during our trip, and we’re thinking of getting them blown up and framed for his room.

Here are a few more that I liked:

This photo and the following two were taken of various ceilings in the Capitol Building.

Flagpole:

Inside the National Cathedral:

This pole-thingy (not the official name for it) is outside the Air & Space Museum:

And finally, the last two were taken inside Union Station:

Okay, so I totally overdid it by showing so many pictures. I think the point of PhotoStory Friday is to show ONE picture that has an element of design in it. Sorry, Paula! I got carried away. I couldn’t narrow it down to just one.

If you have a blog with an interesting photo to share, hop on over to Neutral Dwelling to get all the details. Even if you can’t participate, check out what everyone else is showing today!

What cool pictures. I think you have a budding photographer on your hands.

Washington is definitely a good place to look for architectural elements.

Julia – I don’t blame you for showing so many! Your son is a talented photographer with a great eye. He did a wonderful job! I had a hard time choosing a favorite but I think I liked the very first pic and also the pick of the windmill thingy. (That’s a technical term, of course.)

Jacob has a great eye. It’s so cool to look at things from a different angle; so much more of the architectural detail is clear from the perspective of the photos. Clearly, you have a budding artist there!

Those are really neat pictures! I love those angles that nobody looks at. That’s what makes them such interesting photos.

What’s it like to be the mother of a young Ansel Adams?

The first photo is my absolute favorite and so much better than the aerial shot we might expect from a teen boy–up President Lincoln’s nose! Aren’t you clever to raise a talented and tasteful boy!

julia! i found you through a thread related to a happiness list from pop and find it sweet to see you are showing off architectural shots today, when in my happiness list, i resolved to take more b+w photos, which incidentally happen to be tons and tons of architectural shots. anyway, the photos are great. i might post a few myself and participate.

cheers to you,
samantha

Love flagpole and pole-thingy! I would love to frame them in wide white mattes and black frames and hang them together.

I think your son has a career lined-up already!

Very impressive photos, Jake! Loved them!!

23 Angela August 8, 2008 at 9:03 pm

Good eye, Jake!

You know, if that isn’t called a “pole-thingy,” it most certainly should be renamed that.

When we were young and touring around Europe and the US, my father always said “Look UP”, because everyone saw what was at ground level, but the really fun and special details were UP!
