These are a Few of My Favorite Things…

by hookedonhouses on June 11, 2008

You already saw my Writing Room Makeover. In the “after,” you saw my nice new bulletin boards. You could see them off to the right-hand side from this angle. I think I had a couple of my author autographs that I collect pinned on them, and maybe two photos of the kids.

They didn’t stay this pristine for long. One of my 6-year old daughter Lily’s favorite things to do while I’m working is to draw pictures for me and write little love notes that she pins up there.

She loves to rearrange everything to fit new drawings. It’s a work in progress for her. Lily has strong opinions about what should be on them, like that turquoise watch that I won in a drawing on Daisy’s blog recently (thanks, Daisy!). You’re supposed to hang it on the strap of your purse, but Lily really likes it here.

The boards are a collage that’s always changing, but this is what they look like today. And I love them. Look how bright and cheery they are!

Lily likes to draw on index cards. I have dozens of her mini-art around the house. Her favorite things to draw are smiley faces, smiley suns, flowers, hearts, and our names written together: MOM DAD LILY JACOB.

My friend Beth sent me that fun Barbie postcard from New York. My sister-in-law Shelley gave me this “Writing Muse” to hang in my study. There are some days I really need a muse to help me along. Lily is fascinated by her. She always wants to know, “Is your muse lady giving you good ideas today?”

It’s funny how such small things can make you happy in life. What are some of your favorite things?

If you missed it, check out my entire Writing Room Makeover, which was a birthday present to me last year from my husband and extended family. This room looks nothing like it did before. (Imagine white walls, tan carpet, bare window–very blah.)

Aww! Takes me back to when I was in the throes of “mommyhood.” Thanks, Julia. Enjoy these times with your sweet kids. For me, this is what life is all about.

What a sweet girl and it is so cool that she likes to be creative, just like her Mom.

Wow! What a transformation! I know that must make such a difference when you come into work. Those beautiful, really lovely pieces of art are precious! Please tell Lily that she is quite the artist. And it was nice to see YOU…without a cape! What a beautiful pair you both make! Now, I would like to see those photos you referred to with the matching headbands and door-knocker earrings!

How sweet! My sweet Chloe is always leaving sweet notes *everywhere*. Maybe I should put up a bulletin board to keep them confined :)

I remember reading your office transformation a few months ago and being so jealous–it looks so good.

Your little Lily is so pretty. Does your husband have a shotgun? He may need one. She must be the same age as my medusa-haired Alexis who does similar artwork, sometimes directly on the walls. She loves spelling her brother Hyrum’s name “OHO.” I can not convince her otherwise.

It’s lovely! A writing room? That sounds so much more inspiring than ‘office’… I think that’s what I’ll start calling mine! :)

Yeah, you like that? I hate to call it an “office” when it’s in my house, off my bedroom. I’m much more motivated to come in here and work in the mornings when it sounds like a creative space to be in. -Julia :-)

What a sweet and touching post Julia! I have my nieces drawings all over my office too. They both love to color, and I just eat it up!

Hey there! Love the chandelier in the office area – that is a needed item in my office (but shared with the hubby…..don’t know if it’s “Yankee” enough for the Yankee room – the closest thing I got in there, that is “me”, is my Doris Day/Carey Grant “Touch of Mink” Lobby card – you guessed it – with the NY Yankees in the dugout, hanging up with everything else yankee….)
Anyway – your daughter is beautiful – just like her mom!! Sweet picture…Love her artwork – tell her to keep creating!!
Have a nice weekend!!

Awww, your daughter (who is the same age as my oldest) is so cute! My six year old also loves to draw and we have various pieces of artwork all over the house. Thanks for sharing some of your “special” art with us!
