Just Say No: More Rooms That Need Rehab

What do you suppose lies behind this mild-mannered exterior? And what do you think the Realtor was thinking when he took the photo (”pretty sky!”)?

Take a look at what $1.6 million buys you:

Okay, it’s a little dated, but not too bad, I guess. This is the couch everyone seemed to have in 1995–along with those matching window treatments–but those are easy changes to make. Wait. Is the carpet…dark brown?

Here’s the master bath, which will require some wallpaper removal. Looks like they’ve got some work to do on those old Hollywood-style light fixtures over the sink, and there’s an awful lot of brass. Is that carpet in the bathroom? Why do builders do that, anyway? I’ve never understood that trend.

The dining room. Oh, boy. The pink carpet puts it right over the top for me. I have nothing against pink, but this room may just turn me against it.

I’m not even sure what to say about the room above, which apparently fell asleep in 1985 and needs to be woken up again. The carpet that matches the drapes is a nice designer touch, I guess.

Here’s the same room from the other side, which I found on another MLS site. Unfortunately, their photos were teeny tiny and I can’t get this any bigger (I have to wonder if it was a tactic to keep you from seeing things too clearly). What you may not be able to see is that the tiny checkered mauve plaid that’s in the kitchen continues through this family room. Whoever buys this house needs to either love wallpaper or love removing it.

As if the blue toilet and sink–with brass faucet–weren’t bad enough, they had to paint the walls rosy pink. Good thing there are 5 bathrooms in this house. Maybe you could just use one of the others.

So what do you think? Would you buy this house?

There is no way in hell I’d buy that house. WAYYYYY too much work to be done, none of it cheap or easy. That seller would have to make HUGE concessions.

Who thinks they can sell a house like that?

Julia, you’re cracking me up with your comments! Some home owner is living in dream land thinking they will get that kind of money for all the work that will have to be done. Makes me wonder if the home owner is still wearing big shoulder pads and guess jeans?

Get the owner to make consessions, higher a painter to come in and remove all of the wallpaper and repaint. What do you think that would cost? $5000 Then hike the price and resell. I wish I had more $$ to take things like that on.

As a Realtor I gotta tell you, people will. not. listen. They think their decor is so perfect that it alone will sell the house. My only question….where are the teal vertical blinds??? You *know* they are there somewhere!!!

Janet, you’re so right. I’m sure there ARE some teal verticals somewhere! Ha.

TraceyB, you’re cracking ME up. Now I can’t get the image of the homeowner’s shoulder pads and Guess jeans out of my head. Too funny.

I forgot to mention that this house is right here in Southern Ohio, near where I live. So, you know, it’s not like it’s in a part of the country where you have to fork over a million bucks for a starter home. In these parts, $1.6 million is a lot of money!

Poor people have poor ways but a lot of rich people have poor taste. If that weren’t bad enough, rich folks can flaunt it.

I’m pretty sure Alexis and Krystal Carrington crashed into those vertical blinds with their shoulder pads and the blinds have been sent out for repair.

That’s too funny, Liz. Thanks for the laugh this morning. I needed it!

OMG!!! This is style is what I call “Granny Chic” . Bad colors and a lot of them and everything color cordinated to the “custom” wink..wink carpets. I think that this house need about $30-$40k in updating. I am going to take a little nap the colors are giving me a headache.

Hey, I had that couch in the navy color! OMG I have been reading your blog for 2 days straight! My kids are complaining that their Webkinz are going to die. I love this site, I haven’t laughed so hard in years!!

Those rooms are really over the top—even for someone like me who likes teal and pink. But I don’t like that much of it or that bright/deep!

You never know about potential buyers though. My grandmother sold her house in a slow real estate area two months after she put it on the market. She didn’t make any concessions. One bathroom was pink ceramic tile (floor, shower walls, half way up other walls, counter), pink tub, pink toilet, pink lavatory. Other bathroom was the same with lavender tile and white fixtures. The man who bought the house loved the bathrooms, especially the colors, and picked the pink bathroom for himself and his wife to use.

So you just never know!!!

I actually like the blue fixtures in the bathroom. No, I’m not being sarcastic. I really do!
