Are You Hooked?
I’m hooked on houses–are you? Give yourself a point for each of these statements that you can relate to:
- If there’s a “For Sale” sign in my neighbor’s yard, I can tell you how much they’re asking for their house–and whether it’s worth it.
- I have a habit of checking the real estate listings online, even though I’m not planning to move.
- I think the best time to take a walk is at dusk–after people have started turning on their lights, but before they have closed their blinds!
- I’ve been known to visit Open Houses and model homes, just for fun.
- I will stop to take a photo of a beautiful house if I have a camera with me.
- When I visit someone’s home, I immediately start looking around to see what changes they’ve made since the last time I was there.
- I get upset when I see a beautiful old home that looks neglected and unloved, and I fantasize about “rescuing” it.
- I would go to a neighbor’s party just to get a look inside their house.
- I have considered becoming a real estate agent, or have been told I should be one.
- I’ve been known to check out the local house listings when I’m on vacation to see how much it would cost to live there.
- If I drive through a pretty neighborhood, I slow to a crawl so I don’t miss anything.
- I’m always redecorating my house. It’s never “finished.”
- There are certain movies I have watched repeatedly because of the houses featured in them.
If you agree with 3 or more of these, then you are definitely hooked on houses. You’ve come to the right place! Welcome to the club. ![]()

I absolutely love your blog! I’m definitely obsessed with houses. I watch Revenge as much to see Emily’s beach house as for the show itself. Thank you so much for posting pictures. I analyze each one looking for decorating ideas. Also love your sun room and the way you used red for Christmas was perfect. Keep the pictures coming! Your blog is a winner!!
It had to happen! I found someone as nutty as I am over houses, all of them. Can it be improved, would I like to live here, what would I have done instead of that. I thought I was the only one. I will never, ever forget Scarlet’s Atlanta mansion and that enormous staircase. North by northwest cantilevered house that never existed. So fun to find others with the same affliction.
I got EVERY point on your survey…………………….and even moreso, I have travelled to locations to see the homes used in movies. I think the apex of the houses we visited has been the Ennis House in L.A. used in House on Haunted Hill and my fav houses are the one from Sleeping with the Enemy that I read was a “set” and the house in Hand That Rocks the Cradle, the Mott Home.
I live right near the Hand That Rocks the Cradle house! They destroyed the green house for the movie and had to rebuild it. Beautiful place. I, too, got EVERY single point on the quiz. (I’m so amazed when someone ISN’T totally enthralled with houses. Huh?!?)
I live on the East Coast, and I enjoy going on tours of historical homes. New England has so many possibilities for visits. Years ago I also took a course at Boston University on historical renovation to extend my knowledge of historical houses.. Of course, vacations to Europe and other parts of the world bring in more architectural examples to explore.
I would love to see the interior of Gerard Butler’s California home. Saw his New York Apartment…….”different”.
Wow that was unusual. I just wrote an extremely long comment but
after I clicked submit my comment didn’t show up. Grrrr… well I’m not writing all
that over again. Regardless, just wanted to say great blog!
That’s odd. I checked the spam folder for it but it wasn’t there, either. Not sure what happened. Sorry about that!
Uh oh. I took the quiz and got 100. Yes to every question. We must be soul sisters. I watch Home Alone all the time just to see the house. I watch The Holiday all the time – just to see the English Cottage. etc etc etc. This is a fun problem to have though! Glad to find your blog.
So wonderful to find your web page again. I thought I had lost it since my old pc went on the blitz. I have searched for months and now at last. Please never stop writing. I live for old houses and yes, I am totally hooked. I live down South and have visited all the old plantation homes around but they are not my only love. I like the coastal homes that ramble on and on and on.
Nice to have you back!
Great blog. Can’t believe I just found it today. A day when I was thinking about the things I would do to my home if I had lots of money. And I thought about hiring a designer from HGTV. Of course, Candice Olsen came to mind… I do majority of the things on your list. I am truly hooked on houses.
I LOVE Candice Olsen – she is by far my favorite HGTV designer. I’m a little obsessed. I love her style, both in design and in fashion (I’m tall, too).
Clearly I have found my people.
I too am hooked on houses, and agreed with every single statement in this quiz. I also added, “I make someone else drive so I can look at houses and use my real estate app to check prices”!
Lindagrace…. LOL… great idea! I usually have someone else driving, although digging in his heels every step of the way… but the real estate app is a terrific idea!!!!
Candice is also one of my favorites! I have several, but she’s in my top 5.
Woops!!! I’m hooked. Yes to every single one of those!!! Hahaha! So lovely to have found your gorgeous blog via Sarah from A Beach Cottage. I’m doing her bloggy course right now and have just read your interview with her:)
I was wondering if the house in the movie Practical Magic is on your list. I have to watch that movie every so often just to see the house!
Yes! I love that movie house. You can find the link to Practical Magic and all the others I’ve featured on my Movie Houses page:

Thanks, Julie!
Hi Julia, You’ve got me hooked on your blog. If the economy allowed, I’d spend the rest of my life renovating old houses. I’ve already done an 1890 Victorian, 1850 Federal house, two farms with 20 buildings spanning 1800 – 1920, an 1820 log cabin, a 1904 general store, and my current home, an 1880 farmhouse. Now that I’ve found you, I can feed my fantasies and continue to earn my living via inbound marketing.
Thanks so much!
I answered yes to everyone of those questions, that can’t be good! Just found your blog through stumble upon and loving it x
Thanks, Gina! Nice to hear from you.
Have you thought of featuring pics of the beautiful old house in the 1947 movie “The Uninvited”? How about the Finch house from “To Kill a Mockingbird”? Two of my favorite movies – and I’ve already found several of my favorites at Hookedonhouses. Love the pics of the “Practical Magic” house!
I am so loving your website. I am as crazy for houses as anyone you’ve ever met. Also HOTELS. I’ll research the most beautiful hotels and then maybe, if I’m lucky…. actually go. A movie you probably have never heard of (hope I’m wrong) as it’s old and rather obscure with several incredible houses is called Leave Her To Heaven. All houses are quintessential American but very different from a Lodge on the coolest lake (around the lake are kind of walls so it’s kind of like a swimming pool thats really a lake) to a Connecticut style colonial near the ocean. PLEASE, Julia try to see it and then maybe post it on your very great website. You’re helping to get me through a very cold St.Louis winter. Thanks, Kim
Another choice is salt, powdered pepper and turmeric
powder. In very extreme cases, some patients may elect for laser removal of tonsil stones.
Other evidence you may possibly have tonsil stones include coughing that doesnt appear to have a trigger or just simply wont disappear, sore throat, discomfort, and pressure inside
your ear and/or a feeling that some thing is caught within the back of your throat and cannot come out.
There are safer and cheaper methods to eliminate tonsil stones so
make certain that you take a look at these
possibilities first. Sometimes, during this fight the tonsils themselves succumb to an infection called
tonsillitis.
Well I answered on the Hooked On Houses questions yes. Anyone who knows me, especially my X, my kids and my husband know this about me, it is hard to watch a movie, without me stopping to rewind a movie just to make them look at the decor or landscape in the movie house. lol
I honestly thought I was the only one who did the things on your list. I thought I was crazy. Especially walking past houses at dusk so you can see the furnishings, I am a house stalker. I am also a house cheater because I look at the ones for sale even though I am happily married to mine. My newest obsession is redoing a Victorian doll house, so I can indulge my obsession in miniature. Thank you Julia for your blog!
Amy, your post made me laugh. My husband always says, “Why are you looking at houses? We love our house!” And I do – my house is gorgeous and it’s perfect for us, but you know. A girl can look, right?
I highly recommend a real estate app with a “nearby for sale” option to assist you in your house stalking!
Kim’s post about the 3 houses in Leave Her To Heaven really “validated” my obsession with houses. I am watching it right now for the 3rd or 4th time…just to study the houses, again. Read online that the scenes in New Mexico were really filmed in Sedona, but can’t figure out where the house, itself, is. Love the other 2 houses, as well. You HAVE to watch this movie…..just for the decor/design. You can really FEEL each of the houses and the details are insane!
Oh, I scored 100 on the quiz, as well. This blog is a treasure…I watch Auntie Mame whenever it is on just because of the design transitions. It was a seminal moment in my life when I realized that I had memorized all of the sets as a child. I thought I was just a movie buff until I recognized this theme of memorizing the details of the sets….well, the details of the houses. Sometimes I just want to sit on the porch with Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird…..:)
Love that! Thanks, Risa.
Jo Julia! Im hooked on houses just like you, im texting you all the way from Sweden because ive always, constantly checking you side in hope to find something new to Change at Home, and ill Always Do so thanks a lot! But Now i found my self in a dilemma coz you see i ve tried to fond Photos of the hotellRoom from the Movie “just go with it” by Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston made in 2011 but ive Only find two pics=( i would like you to help Me=) xo angel from Sweden=)
Hi Angel! If there aren’t any photos online of the hotel room, then you can rent the movie and snap them yourself while you watch it on your computer. That’s how I get most of the photos I post here. Nice to hear from you!
Hey,don’t know how I stumbled onto your site but started reading about house hunters I did’nt know that. I will still watch it cause I am such a house junky and I’ve learned a lot from the show. I also love property virgins ,and the hot brother act
The property brothers. You said you like to walk at dusk when lights come on,I too
Will do the same when I live in the city. I love seeing an empty house ,if its unlocked I will go in ,I know it can be dangerous depending on the areaas but I can’t help myself. Peace Out!!!
Bye the way Pintrest is so addicting because of the interior/exterior design.
