Are You Hooked?

  • If there’s a “For Sale” sign in my neighbor’s yard, I can tell you how much they’re asking for their house–and whether it’s worth it.
  • I have a habit of checking the real estate listings online, even though I’m not planning to move.
  • I think the best time to take a walk is at dusk–after people have started turning on their lights, but before they have closed their blinds!
  • I’ve been known to visit Open Houses and model homes, just for fun.
  • I will stop to take a photo of a beautiful house if I have a camera with me.
  • When I visit someone’s home, I immediately start looking around to see what changes they’ve made since the last time I was there.
  • I get upset when I see a beautiful old home that looks neglected and unloved, and I fantasize about “rescuing” it.
  • I would go to a neighbor’s party just to get a look inside their house.
  • I have considered becoming a real estate agent, or have been told I should be one.
  • I’ve been known to check out the local house listings when I’m on vacation to see how much it would cost to live there.
  • If I drive through a pretty neighborhood, I slow to a crawl so I don’t miss anything.
  • I’m always redecorating my house. It’s never “finished.”
  • There are certain movies I have watched repeatedly because of the houses featured in them.

If you can relate to these, then you’re hooked on houses like I am. You’ve come to the right place! Welcome to the club. :-)

I absolutely love your blog! I’m definitely obsessed with houses. I watch Revenge as much to see Emily’s beach house as for the show itself. Thank you so much for posting pictures. I analyze each one looking for decorating ideas. Also love your sun room and the way you used red for Christmas was perfect. Keep the pictures coming! Your blog is a winner!!

It had to happen! I found someone as nutty as I am over houses, all of them. Can it be improved, would I like to live here, what would I have done instead of that. I thought I was the only one. I will never, ever forget Scarlet’s Atlanta mansion and that enormous staircase. North by northwest cantilevered house that never existed. So fun to find others with the same affliction.

I got EVERY point on your survey…………………….and even moreso, I have travelled to locations to see the homes used in movies. I think the apex of the houses we visited has been the Ennis House in L.A. used in House on Haunted Hill and my fav houses are the one from Sleeping with the Enemy that I read was a “set” and the house in Hand That Rocks the Cradle, the Mott Home.

I live right near the Hand That Rocks the Cradle house! They destroyed the green house for the movie and had to rebuild it. Beautiful place. I, too, got EVERY single point on the quiz. (I’m so amazed when someone ISN’T totally enthralled with houses. Huh?!?)

I live on the East Coast, and I enjoy going on tours of historical homes. New England has so many possibilities for visits. Years ago I also took a course at Boston University on historical renovation to extend my knowledge of historical houses.. Of course, vacations to Europe and other parts of the world bring in more architectural examples to explore.

So wonderful to find your web page again. I thought I had lost it since my old pc went on the blitz. I have searched for months and now at last. Please never stop writing. I live for old houses and yes, I am totally hooked. I live down South and have visited all the old plantation homes around but they are not my only love. I like the coastal homes that ramble on and on and on.

Great blog. Can’t believe I just found it today. A day when I was thinking about the things I would do to my home if I had lots of money. And I thought about hiring a designer from HGTV. Of course, Candice Olsen came to mind… I do majority of the things on your list. I am truly hooked on houses.

Reply

lindagrace December 6, 2012 at 10:22 am

I LOVE Candice Olsen – she is by far my favorite HGTV designer. I’m a little obsessed. I love her style, both in design and in fashion (I’m tall, too).

Hi Julia, You’ve got me hooked on your blog. If the economy allowed, I’d spend the rest of my life renovating old houses. I’ve already done an 1890 Victorian, 1850 Federal house, two farms with 20 buildings spanning 1800 – 1920, an 1820 log cabin, a 1904 general store, and my current home, an 1880 farmhouse. Now that I’ve found you, I can feed my fantasies and continue to earn my living via inbound marketing.
Thanks so much!

I am so loving your website. I am as crazy for houses as anyone you’ve ever met. Also HOTELS. I’ll research the most beautiful hotels and then maybe, if I’m lucky…. actually go. A movie you probably have never heard of (hope I’m wrong) as it’s old and rather obscure with several incredible houses is called Leave Her To Heaven. All houses are quintessential American but very different from a Lodge on the coolest lake (around the lake are kind of walls so it’s kind of like a swimming pool thats really a lake) to a Connecticut style colonial near the ocean. PLEASE, Julia try to see it and then maybe post it on your very great website. You’re helping to get me through a very cold St.Louis winter. Thanks, Kim

Another choice is salt, powdered pepper and turmeric
powder. In very extreme cases, some patients may elect for laser removal of tonsil stones.
Other evidence you may possibly have tonsil stones include coughing that doesnt appear to have a trigger or just simply wont disappear, sore throat, discomfort, and pressure inside
your ear and/or a feeling that some thing is caught within the back of your throat and cannot come out.

There are safer and cheaper methods to eliminate tonsil stones so
make certain that you take a look at these
possibilities first. Sometimes, during this fight the tonsils themselves succumb to an infection called
tonsillitis.

Well I answered on the Hooked On Houses questions yes. Anyone who knows me, especially my X, my kids and my husband know this about me, it is hard to watch a movie, without me stopping to rewind a movie just to make them look at the decor or landscape in the movie house. lol

I honestly thought I was the only one who did the things on your list. I thought I was crazy. Especially walking past houses at dusk so you can see the furnishings, I am a house stalker. I am also a house cheater because I look at the ones for sale even though I am happily married to mine. My newest obsession is redoing a Victorian doll house, so I can indulge my obsession in miniature. Thank you Julia for your blog!

lindagrace March 7, 2013 at 4:40 pm

Amy, your post made me laugh. My husband always says, “Why are you looking at houses? We love our house!” And I do – my house is gorgeous and it’s perfect for us, but you know. A girl can look, right? :)

I highly recommend a real estate app with a “nearby for sale” option to assist you in your house stalking! :)

Risa April 22, 2013 at 9:37 pm

Kim’s post about the 3 houses in Leave Her To Heaven really “validated” my obsession with houses. I am watching it right now for the 3rd or 4th time…just to study the houses, again. Read online that the scenes in New Mexico were really filmed in Sedona, but can’t figure out where the house, itself, is. Love the other 2 houses, as well. You HAVE to watch this movie…..just for the decor/design. You can really FEEL each of the houses and the details are insane!

Reply

Risa April 22, 2013 at 9:51 pm

Oh, I scored 100 on the quiz, as well. This blog is a treasure…I watch Auntie Mame whenever it is on just because of the design transitions. It was a seminal moment in my life when I realized that I had memorized all of the sets as a child. I thought I was just a movie buff until I recognized this theme of memorizing the details of the sets….well, the details of the houses. Sometimes I just want to sit on the porch with Atticus in To Kill a Mockingbird…..:)

10/13.. I’m not at all surprised at my score. I LOVE houses! Always have since I can remember. I trespass on vacant properties on the market just to see inside. My kids make fun of me because if we’re watching a movie, I’m always saying something along the lines of ” Oh my God, I love that entry way” or “Oohhh, look at that backsplash!” It could be the most horrid murder scene on film, but all I’ve seen is texture of the wallpaper in the master master bath or the apron sink in the kitchen. Loving this site and some of the homes featured in the tv/movie section!

Your blog is a dream come true! I answered ‘yes’ to All of your questions. I feel like I have found my own kind! I feel that viewing beautiful houses is like admiring an art form. The places that appeal most are ones that are beautiful yet genuine; places that have been thoughtfully decorated whether they are modern and simple or cottage-esk and homey. I do not like clutter in any type or style of home so I feel it is important to choose carefully the things that surround you. Another style of house I LOVE is a log home.

I took your quiz and got a point for every question– our children were raised in the back seats of our family cars as we searched out open houses and cozy neighborhoods- my idea of a fine time! And, I can’t put into words the feeling I have when I watch the old movies and see the amazing houses. Please watch the Gene Tierney movie, LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN. It is a great film about an evil woman who lives in the most beautiful and fascinating variety of homes ever. Unbelievable design and so much fun to see! Thank you!

GIGI….see my post on April 22 regarding “Leave Her to Heaven”. Amazing how many of us “Hooked” people have noticed the 3 homes in that one movie. Watched it 2xs, again, recently as for some reason Turner ran it twice, just a few days apart. Can’t you just smell the fire in the fireplace at the lake house? And smell the piney woods? The desert house….omigosh…..kind of an early contemporary with a bit of Frank Lloyd Wright feel, but with more warmth. What REALLY fascinates me is the use of monochromatic color. Especially in her family’s home…..where she tosses herself down the stairs……heavy use of that soft turquoise green …even in the costumes! What’s really interesting to me is how we all seem to experience these houses in a tactile and visceral way. It’s like we can go INTO the screen and use our senses to “be” there.
Okay, probably waaaay TMI! Hope none of y’all send out the guys with the big nets to take me away. :)

I would LOVE it if you could post pics of the various houses in Leave Her To Heaven. I had seen the movie on some classic channel YEARS ago and was just fascinated by all the homes (I kind of remember 3 in all – the one at the beginning of the movie where she breaks up with her fiance – then the lake house where most of the movie takes place – and finally the Connecticut style 2 story with the famous staircase scene). What I was most taken with (outside of the beauty of all the homes) was how quintessencially American all 3 were – but yet so different. Also that lake that was sort of built like the swimming pool with actual stone or brick sides like a pool. Kind of weird but cool. Anyway – love Hooked On Houses.

Have always been hooked on houses! At age eight, I was drawing house plans for my someday dream house. (I saw my mom sketching a floor plan on a napkin after looking at a house they were considering buying). Walking in the wilderness seems boring to me because there are no houses to check out. I can walk for miles if there are houses and shops to walk by. As a lover of houses I also thought I’d be a good realtor but found that they spend a lot of time dealing with legal things (which are not my thing). So I’ve spent most of life improving houses. Sometimes spending the whole day watching HGTV if I’m not careful (and have). It’s good to find a place where others share my passion for houses.

I love that you were drawing house plans when you were eight! We would’ve been great friends. :)

Don’t forget ESTATE SALES? I like to tag along with my husband just to see the houses – and sometimes inquire if it’s for sale – and for how much! Yes, I’m bold sometimes :-) Great way to get inside and see.

I got “hooked on houses” a long time ago and my husband has for years said I should give up nursing to go into real estate. After discovering your blog, you should know that you have a twin sister in “hooked on houses” …ME! I am only slightly obsessed on the Hamptons-style of decorating but have DVR’d every episode of Revenge and watched them over and over for decorating ideas. My secret is out and I am so happy (and relieved) that I am not alone :)

Hi Marilyn! So nice to hear from my twin! It’s funny because I was just watching “Revenge” when your comment came through. Ha. I love the sets on that show! :)

Oh yes, forgot to tell you, I got 100% on your test and have been doing all of that for years. My hubby keeps asking what is wrong with me! Indeed, I have found my people.

Found this website surfing one day, and just love it. I watch certain movies just to memorize the sets. My favorite film sets are All About Eve, Ball of Fire, The Ghost & Mrs. Muir and on television, I always loved MTM & Rhoda – the first apartment Mary Richards lived in, and loved Rhoda’s apartment with Joe. Love watching Sex & The City for Carrie’s apartment. I subscribe to Zip Realty and Zillow because I love to look at RE listings.

I’ve owned a few properties and enjoyed decorating but my absolute favorites were rentals! I rented a floor through studio, 315 sq feet with a wood burning stove in Bay Village, the studio looked something out of a 1950′s movie, it was sensational (Bay Village is a historical neighborhood in Boston, MA) and am currently living on Cape Ann in a modern one bedroom that I decorated “metro’ style.

Sorry for a long comment, but I love this website!!

My peeps! I remodel houses and yards in my head all the time. Just because I don’t actually own them doesn’t seem to matter. I can now tell my husband I’m perfectly normal. Of course I got all the questions right. I could spend all day here!

I answered yes or agreed with every single thing you have on that quiz. I do have a love and passion for homes….. and maybe it’s not too late to become a realtor.
I think every house tells us a story and something about the people that live there. I hate to see homes destroyed or abandoned…..sad.

Hi Julia! Just for fun I read your “about” page . It’s so amazing that you get a million
hits a month! I will also share my story about how I found you. I am in love with model homes and movie sets , so I guess it was back in 2008 or 2009 I was googling for a site and found yours. I’ve been hooked ever since! Now you’ve seen lots of blogs, Pinterest, and God knows what else come along. You are , to me, a solid harbor of joy for house lovers! Thanks and congrats!!

I remember writing a couple posts about model homes back then because my parents had just bought one. They sold all of their furniture and moved into the house as-is. So maybe that’s why Google sent you in my direction! I love that you’ve been reading and commenting on my blog for so long. Readers like you make me feel like this really is a community of like-minded friends.

Thanks! :)

I am over the moon I found your blog with houses that make my heart pitter patter.
There is a cottage In Bayfield, Ontario, Canada that is wonderful. It is called The Tamarack Cottage. I have not stayed there yet, but it is on my bucket list. I answered yes to every question on your quiz. I am most definitely hooked and I adore the cottages you have on your site. Thanks…this discovery was definitely the highlight of my day.

I’m truly surprised you started this page instead of me. I answered yes to ALL the quiz questions. I’ve been this way since I was about 5. No, I’m not kidding. Before the internet, I’d check out the “hot new listings” page of the paper. I’d ride by the homes for sale just to see what they looked like and if they were a good deal. I always know what is for sale and whether or not the price is fair. I REALLY should have been an agent. Plan to do this in semi-retirement in about 6 years. :o) Elaine

I recently watched an old Barbara Streisand movie called “For Pete Sake”. I think you’d enjoy the silly movie, but you would LOVE her apartment. It’s decorated so cute and looks a lot like how we are decorating today. There is a muddy brown on the walls with white trim and in her entry way she has a gallery of empty/ornate picture frames that are painted white. I love their cozy home and also her cute wardrobe. They also show the sister-in-law’s home, which is hilarious with it’s protective plastic on everything! I would love to see you do a post on this movie.
