Are You Hooked?

Are you Hooked on Houses? Give yourself a point for each of the following statements that you agree with:

  • If there’s a “For Sale” sign in my neighbor’s yard, I can tell you how much they’re asking for their house–and whether it’s worth it.
  • I have a habit of checking the real estate listings online, even though I’m not planning to move.
  • I think the best time to take a walk is at dusk–after people have started turning on their lights, but before they have closed their blinds!
  • I’ve been known to visit Open Houses and model homes, just for fun.
  • I will stop to take a photo of a beautiful house if I have a camera with me.
  • When I visit someone’s home, I immediately start looking around to see what changes they’ve made since the last time I was there.
  • I get upset when I see a beautiful old home that looks neglected and unloved, and I fantasize about “rescuing” it.
  • I would go to a neighbor’s party just to get a look inside their house.
  • I have considered becoming a real estate agent, or have been told I should be one.
  • I’ve been known to check out the local house listings when I’m on vacation to see how much it would cost to live there.
  • If I drive through a pretty neighborhood, I slow to a crawl so I don’t miss anything.
  • I’m always redecorating my house. It’s never “finished.”
  • There are certain movies I have watched repeatedly because of the houses featured in them.

If you agree with 3 or more of these, then you are definitely hooked on houses. You’ve come to the right place! Welcome to the club. :-)

Love, love, love the site! Especially now that Cottage Living has stopped publication. What were they thinking??
I have also turned my sister-in-law, Dana, on to your blog. She’s also my decorator/organizer/advisor/personal shopper/encourager with my small house – and does it all across country!
BTW – One True Thing (movie with Meryl Streep) is one of my all time favorite “interior” films. I’ll watch it when I’m feeling blue, and immediately feel “at home”.
Thanks for the good work, Gina Tucker

I love this site! Just trained to be an interior designer because I am hooked on houses!

3 cecpe January 4, 2010 at 11:30 am

Have you seen Barbi Bentons (Hugh Hef’s old flame) house? It was featured on
“the girls next door”. She lives in Aspen Colorado with her husband. The house is HUGE and the decor is way out there.
It would be a great house to see in pics. I’ve been trying to find it on google all day!

4 hookedonhouses January 4, 2010 at 11:35 am

cecpe–
I haven’t seen that house. If you find any pics of it, let me know! -Julia

5 Nancy January 4, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Just discovered this site today and I’m loving it. The Michael Douglas/Gwyneth Paltrow film A Perfect Murder is one of the movies I watch repeatedly for the houses and his office. Also, there was an awful, failed sitcom called Off Centre that had the BEST condo ever.

6 cecpe January 4, 2010 at 3:52 pm

I agree. I love the condo in “a perfect murder” and have it on dvd for the purpose of re-examing the decor!

Hi Julia,
I just came across your blog while “fantasy” house hunting online…after the first few questions of the quiz I could not stop laughing becuase i am guilty of all of the above! My sides hurt…we would be best friends for sure.
I lived in Paris for the past 10 years and I made a hobby of veiwing apartments. I am now living in Long Island and we are renovating a 1900 tudor home. My friends say I move just to decorate and i should be a real estate agent.
They pulled HGTV from our local cable and I am in withdrawal. Thanks for giving me a new outlet.
Susan LI, NY
PS. do you have info on the movie, “Something’s gotta give”? love that house.

In case you haven’t found it yet, here’s my post about Something’s Gotta Give:

wow. Thank you again Julia for the post yesterday, kinda blows my mind that it’s on there as one of your top 5! Such a blessing to me, and thank you so, so much. :)
Happy New Year!!!! :)

I didn’t need this quiz—but I said yes to every question. The “Something’s Gotta Give” house has had me in it’s grasp for quite sometime. Not pratical for where I live in the northeast where it is cccc-cold and snowy a lot, but such a fantasy. I have frozen that on my screen and literally picked it like a chicken carcass. Guess that started for me when I was young and even though you couldn’t freeze frame something I knew every knook and cranny of Mary Richard’s Minneapolis apt. Love your blog!

Hi Julia!! Oh my gosh!! Is it possible that we were identical twins seperated at birth?!? I was chuckling as i read through your “hooked on houses” quiz! I do ALL of those things and them some!! I am so glad that i stumbled upon your website! I jokingly told my husband, now he’ll know what it feels like to “loose” his spouse to the screen! me with your blog & him with football on tv!! LOL!! Seriously, you have also inspired me to start my own blog to share my love of creating a cozy home, gardening & my love of dollhouses & miniatures!! Reading your blog everyday lifts me up and makes me even more happy about life! It expands on all of my emotions that i already feel about decorating, sharing & a happy home! Hi Julia

What an interesting website you have! I was watching ‘Something’s gotta give’ last night here in the UK and was looking up some information on the set design and came across you!

There is so much to read and look at in your site. I once came across a really lovely house in Georgetown some years back and have a photo of it in my summerhouse, will send you a copy.

Best wishes for 2010.

Giuseppe

I am in love with this site. I was looking for photos of Nora Walker’s kitchen from Brothers and Sisters and stumbled upon this site. It’s wonderful. I will watch entire movies or shows just for the houses. I even sat through a season of The Hills just to get peaks at the house they were renting–that takes commitment! Thank you for creating a site for house lovers!

14 Julie January 10, 2010 at 12:48 am

Is it bad if I’ve answered ‘true’ to every single question? This is a great site, and I’m hooked on it. Thanks for doing such great work! By the way, have you checked out ‘Barbie’s Haunted Mansion’ over at Lovelylisting.com? It’s a beautiful old Victorian in Iowa, and it looks like someone has bought it and is going to restore it as they have done 19 others in the area. It’s a really happy ending for a house that has been decorated rather horridly. :)

15 Deirdre January 10, 2010 at 10:53 pm

I LOVE this blog/website!!! I’ve spent way too much time on it today, however!! lol…

What about the properties in “Meet Joe Black”? Amazing!!!
And I completely agree with the comments about “A Perfect Murder” – one of my all-time favorite movies – mostly b/c of that amazing Manhattan swank tank!

16 Sherrillene Zoch January 11, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Thank you for your website it is wonderful.

17 Northerngirl January 11, 2010 at 7:18 pm

answered yes to every question, good to know I’m in the right place :)

18 Joy Jenkins January 11, 2010 at 8:27 pm

Just stumbled across this site today and I L-O-V-E it! I’ve been wanting to compare the beds in “You’ve Got Mail” and “Bewitched” and they were both on this site. Yeah! Thanks for sharing such a great, interesting site. Glad to know that I’m not the only one who is Hooked On Houses. =-)

19 Marian Horton January 11, 2010 at 9:56 pm

What about the house in Fatal Attraction?? Did you do an analysis of that house?

20 Marigold January 11, 2010 at 9:59 pm

Mypersonalfavoritesa r the house in It’s Complicated, the Family Stone, Stepmom,Somethings Gotta Give, Fatal Attraction, You’ve Got Mail. 23 Gina in Big D January 16, 2010 at 10:15 pm

Hi Julia,
Just got back from seeing “It’s Complicated”, again! Ok, you know you’re a true house junkie when you go back to see a film at the theater for the house shots. I love the movie and the story line, but the second time around I could really study the interiors – I love California style! From the Stanhope hotel lobby, her mouth watering Bakery, to her lovely, warm ranch home with that incredible garden! I think there should definitely be a sequel, just so we can see the addition!!
This movie did for Santa Barbara what “Something’s Gotta Give” did for the Hamptons.
Hope all is well and keep up the good work,
gina

24 Barbara January 17, 2010 at 10:02 am

Hi julie,
I have been commissioned to make a 1:12 scale replica of the Stuart Little Kitchen. I was wondering if you know what the top of the cabinets looked like. Do they have bonnets or are they plain?
Barbara

25 hookedonhouses January 17, 2010 at 10:26 am

Barbara–
That’s an interesting challenge! I have no idea what the top of the cabinets looked like. I’d have to watch the movie again to see. -Julia

26 Tracy January 19, 2010 at 2:58 pm

I’m definitely hooked on houses! It’s so funny how you mention walking at dusk. As a child my Mother and I use to go for rides at night &we always loved being able to see inside peoples houses, just to see what they looked like. As an adult I still enjoy it just as much. My husband laughs at me, but I have a luv for houses and decorating. Wouldn’t it be great if they had open houses on streets, where you could just go in and look around other peoples houses?
I also just love looking at real estate listings w/ no intention of buying. I luv to see what the houses look like inside & luv when they still have their decor up. That’s always a plus! And, of course my husband and I have no intention of buying.
I just recently found your site and I’m so glad I did as I luv it. I’m not nuts after all! LOL.

Thanks,

Tracy

I just found this and already in love with it.
Driving around at nite..yes yes… but I also turn on certain lights in my own home, and leave the window coverings open, so the ‘gawkers’ can get a good look. :)
During a Holiday Lights in my historic neighborhood (grilled hot dogs and hot Dr. Pepper are served from my yard)..I had to run in the house to get something and a couple ladies were standing right at the front window, wondering about something. I answered them, and they said ohh do you know the ppl who live here? I said I do! ha
Love this site. Did I say that already?
Thanks for the work putting it all up!
Deanne

28 Dana January 27, 2010 at 6:08 pm

31 Lisa January 29, 2010 at 4:37 pm

I am blown away by this site. I am always rewatching my favorites (Marley and Me, The Holiday, You’ve Got Mail, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Out of Africa, Something’s Got to Give, etc.) , not to follow the characters, but to daydream about the homes and look at the decor. I was just googling images of the Marley and Me Florida starter home when I found your site. You have everything! Thank you so much for your site – this is heaven – I am totally hooked.

32 Janet February 2, 2010 at 10:02 pm

Well this is just the best thing i’ve stumbled on in forever! I love to watch Nancy Meyers and Nora Ephron movies over and over, in no small part due to the stunning homes they always create. And you’ve featured them here!!! All my favourites. Love it. Really, really love it.

36 Kathie February 5, 2010 at 3:07 pm

Have you ever seen the movie “Leave Her to Heaven”? It won an academy award in the late 1940’s. All of the houses are breathtaking and beautiful, especially the lake house called Back of the Moon. I love your site. It is pure happiness.
