Quiz Time: How Hooked Are You?

I thought it would be fun to take a poll and see just how “hooked” my readers are on houses. Take the quiz (a version of what I posted here), and then tell us how you scored.

Are you Hooked on Houses? Give yourself a point for each of the following statements that you agree with:

1. If there’s a “For Sale” sign in my neighborhood, I can tell you how much they’re asking for their house, and whether it’s worth it.

2. I have a habit of checking the real estate listings online, even though I’m not planning to move.

3. I think the best time to take a walk is at dusk–after people have started turning on their lights, but before they have closed their blinds!

4. I like to visit Open Houses and model homes, just for fun.

5. I will stop to take a photo of a beautiful house if I have a camera with me.

6. When I visit someone’s home, I immediately start looking around to see what changes they’ve made since the last time I was there.

7. I get upset when I see a beautiful old home that looks neglected and unloved, and I fantasize about “rescuing” it.

8. I have considered or have been told I should be a real estate agent, architect, or decorator.

9. I like to check out the local house listings when I’m traveling to see how much it would cost to live there–and then fantasize about either buying a vacation home or moving there for good.

10. I can name my favorite paint colors–or the ones I used in my house–off the top of my head.

*EXTRA CREDIT* Give yourself 2 extra points if you regularly read 3 or more decorating/house blogs or write one yourself!

Great quiz Julia & I like the new look of your blog. I laughed because I am in the final stages of getting my real estate license. I figured it was about time to make me legal!!

Well I am in the 6-9 points range, but I used to be a real estate appraiser so maybe that gives me some extra points huh,Julia!

I know I have a problem – the question is whether I should continue blogging about it or make a career of it. Currently fantasizing about buying a “summer home” about 2000′ from mine.

I came across your blog a couple of months ago and now I realize I’m not alone in obsessing about houses. I laughed when I saw the quiz. I’m guilty of all but carrying a camera with me to photograph houses! Love your blog – keep up the good work!

  6. Christine says

Oh my gosh, I thought I was the only one who went for walks at dusk ; )

Question number 7 was the one that struck me the most. There is an old house in my husband’s home town that we pass when going to visit his parents, and I would so like to rescue it. I can so imagine what it must have looked like in all its glory and I would love to return it to that state.

Honestly, I answered yes to each question except the one about old houses. My hubby is a builder so I guess I’ve always focused on new construction. I should look into this ‘becoming a real estate agent’ idea….. anyone have any tips or info to share? :)

Hello, my name is Laura and I’m addicted to houses. :-)

I LOLd at #3…Mike wants to hide under a car when I do this. Though since we’ve bought a house…I notice he’s come around a bit.

I also got a perfect score. I’m constantly redesigning other people’s homes in my head! And when I go to those Open Houses for fun, I’m always thinking of how the homes should have been staged.

But your fans agree. We only want you writing your blog.

I’m hooked, but there’s no way I could write your blog! That takes more than just being hooked on houses. Kudos.

  15. says

I’m totally hooked on houses. I got a perfect score. I knew I was already hooked, expecially when neighbors come to me to see if I know what a house is listed for.

You have been reading my mind, Julia…I’m guilty of all of them! When my son was around 7…we were seriously considering moving…so we spent quite a few weekend walking through new subdivisions trying to decide exactly what we wanted while checking out the paint colors and feature. One Saturday morning he popped out of bed and asked, “Are we going to go try out houses today?” :-) Yep, I’m obsessed! Great poll!

It looks like most of us are hooked beyond redemption.

I have a problem, when I visit friends’ homes, of looking up at the ceilings and out of the windows as well as at my hosts. I’ve been told that scanning the entire space like this is ‘buying’ behavior rather than guest behavior and therefore can be somewhat rude!

We should add extra points for:
    a) Over-use of zillow.com to find out what people actually paid for their homes (guilty!)
    b) Knocking on the door of somewhere you used to live and asking complete strangers if you can come in to see how it looks now. My Mom actually did this … I guess this Hooked thing is genetic.

The only one I couldn’t answer yes to was the paint. I’m not great in that dept – although I am great with colors. (My husband things I am one of those people who have an off the spectrum view of color!) Love this quiz and finding that there are so many other people who share my obsession of houses!

I must say since finding your site recently I have fallen in love with your blog. I am hooked on houses as well. I’m an interior designer and have always loved homes and liked peeking in windows on walks.
I think I have one more thing you could add to your list.

    11. Seeing a home for sale that you love and want with no intention of buying it (unless you won the lottery) and getting heartbroken when someone buys it knowing you can never have it.

Love the posts, keep up the good work!

Oh My God! I just arrived in USA to study interior design for 3 years. I am 40 years old and I am hoocked on houses. I answered yes for all the questions and I got the 2 extra points too!! Does anyone like the brazilian stile? I love this site!
