I love California / Arts & Crafts bungalows, have been searching for the plans to the house in The Story of Us for years. If you could post that, I’d be in heaven.
There’s also a good bungalow in the tv series Numb3rs, the father’s house (Judd Hirsch).
And along with several other posters, I’d love to see a layout for Andie McDowell’s apartment in Green Card. I have serious NYC envy there!

How about “The Accidental Tourist”…esp the scene where they are sitting around the table eating with the china cabinet showing what I think is my Grandmother’s dishes which are in my possession. I was always curious about that and I actually met Gina Davis who knows a friend of mine and I wanted to ask her how to find out if I could purchase them but chickened out as I didn’t want to bug her!

I can find no pictures on the web anywhere….had to rent the movie to see it again. The kitchen is a small dream kitchen, with wall to wall windows. I’ve met many people over the years who remember that one scene from the movie! Would love to see good photos of it. Love your website!

Hi Julia,
I love your site and mentioned it in a speech I gave (on interiors inspiration from online and TV) at the Grand Designs Live Show in London in May. I’m doing the same speech at their show in Birmingham in October.
Anyway, I’d love it if you would feature JLo’s apartment from The Back Up Plan in particular her bedroom. I loved that room and feel I may be ready for my bedroom taste to ‘grow up’ a little!
Thanks so much,
Sam

Hello Julia, just got “hooked” onto your website looking for more pics of Jennifer Anistons house in Beverly Hills, thanks for the pics! I was just wondering if you could help me out…since you seem to have connections with pics, I have been looking for more photos of the house on the movie “the Mechanic” with Jason Stathom, it was out in 2011. It is a gorgeous house and at the end of the movie the actor blows it up, I actually felt sick!:)
If you could send a link or let me know what site to go to (that is secure safe:) that would be much appreciated.
Thanks for being even crazier about houses than I am, it’s nice to know I am not the only junkie:)

Hi Julia! Great blog…

I was wondering if you know the location of the house that was used in the 1989 movie “Parenthood” with Steve Martin. The house I’m referring to is the Buckman home, which from the outside looks like it’s set on the water. Do you know where this home is located, and do you have any photos of the real home?

Thanks for your help!

Parenthood the movie was filmed in and around the College Park neighborhood of Orlando Florida. I love Helen’s house and Frank’s (grandpa) house in the movie too! The house used for Helen’s is on Eastin Ave, Frank’s is on Smith, and Gil’s house is on Lakeside Dr. near the Leu Gardens. Could you please put these houses from Parenthood the movie to your list to do? Thanks!!!

I’ve become obsessed with looking at houses in movies, often google them as I’m watching lol
I’ve come across a few older less known movies that have great houses:

A Memory in my Heart – Jane Seymour movie, the house she was in when she was married before loosing her memory.
Crimes of Passion: Sleepwalker – this one has a lovely three story type house.

I’m not sure if I am confusing a couple of movies but I think there is a few nice houses in Something New. I could be wrong though. I remember a low set house with amazing front doors. Which reminds I love the doors for Nathan and Hallie Scott’s house in later seasons after high school!

Thanks for this website.

I’ve been hunting around to find the original house used in the movie Hook. It is the house in London where granny Wendy was living. I’ve never forgotten the children’s bedroom with the alcoves for their beds and the window with the little gate in front of it. Does anyone know if a real house was used in that movie and was it in London?

Can you do a segment on Sookie’s house from True Blood (HBO Series)? She has a traditional home with a wrap around porch. Very cute…(especially when it was “renovated” this season (Season 5).

You may also enjoy the house of her neighbor Bill Compton, its a Southern Plantation home based on a real home in Louisiana.

We rented a lame movie from redbox the other night, but the house was fantastic! Check it out– it was called “Waiting for Forever” starring Rachel Bilson, Blythe Danner, Niki Blonsky and a few other familiar faces. I love your blog!

Hocus Pocus from 1993!!! That has two adorable old houses, and it is such a fun Halloween movie! The neigbhorhood is adorable too. That could be a great one for the fall. Even if you don’t feature it, you should definitely watch it. It would be right up your alley!

Thanks so much for all of your work on this site! It is such a great escape from my work day. It takes me far away!

Hi – I love your web site. I was wondering if you have any info on the house used in the movie Now Voyager with Betty Davis. And – the name of the castle used in High Spirits, in the movie it was Castle Plunket. Would love to see them in detail inside and out.

Thanks for your help in advance

I had left a previous post about the house from The Ghost and Mrs. Muir TV series. In the series widow Carolyn Muir leaves Philadelphia with her two children and leases “Gull Cottage” in the small town of Schooner Cove Maine. The house used was actually in Montecito Californa and according to Zillow.com is now for sale. The link is below and I hope everyone enjoys the pictures of this beautiful home.

What a great site!! I just found it and I’m in love. We could be twins… I’m notorious for picking movies to watch just because of the houses in them. I think my love for brit type movies is due to the grandeur of the homes. You listed so many of my favourites (way too many to list). Here are some suggestions:

Weekend at Bernie’s, Grey Gardens, Lasata (Jackie Kennedy family home), Amityville Horror, The Others, Great Expectations (Ringling bros house), Green Card, Remains of the Day, Proof of Life, Hannibal, Red Dragon, Gosford Park, Forest Gump

Thanks… Have a good one :)

Just wanted to add another suggestion for a possible future feature….I saw the new movie Friends with Benefits with Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis and both their apartments were so dramatically different…one so masculine and the other so feminine, I loved them both. As well as the beachfront home JT’s characters sister and father lived.

Hey Julia,
I saw a small independent film a few days ago called, “Rabbit Hole.” It has a lot of big named stars like Nicole Kidman and Dianne Weist, but got very little promotion.
Anyway, almost the entire movie is set in a craftsman influenced house that is TO DIE FOR!!! Just minutes into the movie I knew this would be a house for you to feature. I hope you can find out more about it so I can add some pics to my dream house file :O)
Anxiously awaiting your thoughts,
Leiane

Other movie houses that I love (do you sense an 80′s theme?):
Moonstruck: Cher’s house, 19 Cranberry St, Brooklyn Heights NY
Big Chill: Harold and Sarah’s home, Tidalholm Mansion, Beaufort SC
Roxanne: Roxanne’s house, 1020 Sugar Mountain Way, Anmore BC, Canada
Mystic Pizza: Charlie’s family mansion, 35 Church St, Stonington CT
house that Tim is renovating, 6 Water’s Edge Rd, Westerly RI

I recently stumbled onto this site and absolutely adore it. Awesome job! It’s made me realize that I’ve always been “Hooked on Houses” both in real life and on the big screen. I’d love to see you showcase the house from the movie “Premonition” with Sandra Bullock. If I recall correctly… it was simple, yet elegant. And, for whatever reason the large, plain white cabinet-ed kitchen captured my interest.

“Wedding Crashers” Secretary Cleary’s House (Christopher Walken’s house)

Rene Clair’s “And then there were none” (1945) Movie. (Novel by Agatha Christie)
There’s a massive gorgeous “Fireplace” in the Living room” seen in the beginning of the movie. It’s an old Black and White movie starring Barry Fitzgerald, Walter Huston and Louis Hayward.

Hi Julia,

Thanks for writing such an interesting blog. I’m completely addicted! (I’m an architectural historian, so I feel like I can justify the hours I spend on your site…hehehe)

I have a suggestion for a movie/TV house – “A Wedding”, directed by Robert Altman in 1978. I saw it this weekend on Netflix, and immediately thought of your blog. While the film may not be everyone’s cup of tea (dark comedy, overlapping dialogue, lack of a clear plot)…the house is amazing!

It was filmed at the Lester Armour house in Lake Forest, on Chicago’s North Shore. The house was built in 1931 by David Adler, with interiors by Frances Elkins (his sister and collaborator). At the time of filming, the interiors and estate were completely intact, so the movie is a great way to see how the “other half” lived in the 1930s.

Photos & more information about the house is included in Stephen Salny’s “The Country Houses of David Adler.” (pp. 146 – 159). GoogleBooks link below:

http://books.google.com/books?id=BIbNLkbCANoC&pg=PA158&dq=lester+armour+david+adler&hl=en&ei=DztdTuLjBbKHsAKIkb0T&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CC4Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=lester%20armour%20david%20adler&f=false

In the early 1980s, the house was sold. The estate was subdivided, and the main house was largely gutted and redecorated for a charity show house. Mrs. Armour’s fabulous mirrored dressing room somehow found its way to the townhouse of Miles Redd, a New York interior designer. (page 1 of portfolio, top right corner)

Enjoy! Thanks again for such great articles!

-Justin

You should do a page on the houses in Executive Suite. William Holden’s house is quite a spread for a struggling engineer, but it features just about everything you look for in mid-century modern. I think we see at least one house belonging to one of the “old guard” executives — I think it’s Frederic March’s house, colonial revival. We also see Barbara Stanwyck’s place — she spends most of the movie weeping — and the apartment one of the heavies has his doxie stowed. Lots of different housing!

I am dying to know more about the house faetured in teh George C. Scott mystery film, “The Changeling”. Supposedly, it was set in the Seattle area. The house was burned to the ground- in the film, which could have certainly been orchestrated by film magic (I don;t think they had the computer magic down, in those days). Nevertheless, it is a haunting old house and in the film, it certainly appeared to be very real. Question: If it was a real house, does it still exist did they indeed burn it down for the filming? Any information would be well-appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Julia – I will eventually get around to reading all of your past posts, because there isn’t a one I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed, and giggled over the fact that I’m not the only one with this strange obsession of needing to know every detail of every house I come across. Given your pleasure both in houses, and in pop culture, I can’t imagine that you don’t already know about this book, http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/1579121071/ref=si_aps_sup?p=random&ie=UTF8&qid=1316909736#reader_1579121071
but just in the rare chance you haven’t, I would be highly remiss, given the pleasure you’ve given me through your blog, not to make sure that you at least, know about it. It will, no doubt, be a huge kick.

I was thinking to myself the other day about a house on one of my shows, and I had to check and see if you’d done it yet, But I don’t think you have. It’s a newer show called Pretty Little Liars. There are 4 girls, so 4 homes, I especially like Aria’s Home and Spencers. Maybe it will make your list one day!

In the movie “Fireproof” with Kirk Cameron, I absolutely love the color of the
walls in the dining room of their room. Kirk is lighting candles toward the middle to end of the movie, and the walls are a rich gold color. I am trying to locate the paint color and possible brand of paint that was used on the set in this room. Do you know?

This may be an unusal request. I just watched the movie Matilda with my nieces and I absolutely fell in love with Miss Honey/ Miss Trunchbull’s home. Throughout the movie, it’s shown in pretty bad condition but I still love it. Only at the end does it show the house in good condition. And it has a back staircase going into the kitchen. (Although, it’s quite messy and you don’t see it but once. )
I’ve tried to find information about it, but I have been unsuccessful. Hope you can help out.

I love your website and glad to know I’m not the only one with this obsession.

152 Elijah Luthor October 26, 2011 at 12:44 am

You are not “the only one with this obsession” indeed. Growing up watching this movie in the 1990′s, I myself have always loved that house. I am very architecturally inclined. You might say I have an “edifice complex.” I have been searching diligently all across the Internet as well trying to find more information. Here is the only thing I can find on that very stately Victorian homestead. Go here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hoffarth/4475485388/#/. Oh, and if you have watched Scream 2, that house was indeed used for the sorority in which Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character met an unpleasant demise.

I know it with the french title named after the orphan little girl “Esther”. It’s a movie with Vera Farmiga and the little girl is very scary. The house is amazing that’s true and I’d love to see pics of it but I have no other clues about it. Julia, you should watch that movie, you’d love the house; it reminds me a little of the one in twilight.

Other house:
There is a wonderful one in the tv series Journey Man with Kevin McKidd (but is this the same title in english?). The scene takes place in San Francisco so it is a victorian house; it’s neighboored with the one from Charmed. (we can see both houses in both series). The plot is about a reporter travelling in time to change events in SF.

Thanks.

Sorry, Anne! I do love the house and may cover it someday, but it’s just not on my short list right now of about 7 movies I’m working on. I get hundreds of requests a month and can only feature 3-4.

I choose them in different ways. Sometimes a reader will send me some great photos or links to information about a movie house that I want to share. Other times I’m getting dozens of emails about a certain movie or TV show everyone wants information on, so I know the demand is great for it. And sometimes it’s just one of my personal faves that I feel like researching. Sorry I can’t get to them all as quickly as everyone would like me to!

231 Kim November 14, 2011 at 3:02 pm

What a fun site! I’m only sad that I’ve only just found it. I love checking out interior spaces in movies – I’m really happy you did separate posts on each of The Holiday’s spaces. They are each so special! I would love to see any of Wes Anderson’s films featured or the apartment from P.S. I love you. I’m sure you’re busy and you clearly have a million+ requests but I just thought I’d share my favorites : ) Thanks for your fun blog!

I just love all of your website, Julia, but the TV/Movie houses page is my favorite. Have you seen Dharma & Greg? There were some really fun sets on that show: Dharma’s original apartment, supposedly a converted factory loft, is just full of neat little details, and the in-laws houses are equally fun. You can watch some episodes on YouTube and there are reruns on WGN in some places: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8egfY_gFec&feature=related.

No plans to right now. Haven’t even seen the movie yet. Is it out on DVD? I’ll have to check Netflix for it.

I love your site ! I was wondering if you could do a post on The Help if you’d seen it! I found myself loving the houses in the movie. Especially Celia and Skeeters mothers home ! Anyway, please keep up the great work ! Your site is wonderful.

While the recent movie, The Change Up, might not be a fit for everyone, the house is really cool; would love to see it.

Any interest in looking at the details of the flat and the beach house in “Ringer”? Closet in the flat is amazing…

I have enjoyed you site so much! I just did a post on your pictures for Christmas in Connecticut. I was hoping to find some pictures for my favorite movie Holiday Inn. Have you considered adding pictures of that amazing house? I am guessing that it might be the same set as White Christmas, but I like Holiday Inn better. Anyway, I linked back to your site and appreciate what you do!
Thank you

Love this site, and most every movie I love is listed. I’d love to see the homes in both The Saint and Stealing Beauty, as you haven’t covered those so far that I can see. In The Saint, I am particularly interested in the English pub/restaurant Val Lilmer and Elizabeth Shue have wine at, and the cottage in the woods at the end of the movie when they meet back up. In Stealing Beauty I am interesed in both the Tuscan villa the family lives in, and the big mansion the party is filmed in. Keep up the great work, my favorite blog!

Neither of those movies rings a bell for me. I’ll have to keep an eye out for them. Thanks, Christine!

I just found your site and I’m hooked! Do you have any information about the house in “Big Chill”? Baby boomer house-crack.

Hey,

I was wondering if you watched “The Help”? They have very nice
plantation-style estates. It is in the 60′s style, very similar to Mad Men.

Thanks and good work so far.
