Are You Hooked?

Are you Hooked on Houses? Give yourself a point for each of the following statements that you agree with:

  • If there’s a “For Sale” sign in my neighbor’s yard, I can tell you how much they’re asking for their house–and whether it’s worth it.
  • I have a habit of checking the real estate listings online, even though I’m not planning to move.
  • I think the best time to take a walk is at dusk–after people have started turning on their lights, but before they have closed their blinds!
  • I’ve been known to visit Open Houses and model homes, just for fun.
  • I will stop to take a photo of a beautiful house if I have a camera with me.
  • When I visit someone’s home, I immediately start looking around to see what changes they’ve made since the last time I was there.
  • I get upset when I see a beautiful old home that looks neglected and unloved, and I fantasize about “rescuing” it.
  • I would go to a neighbor’s party just to get a look inside their house.
  • I have considered becoming a real estate agent, or have been told I should be one.
  • I’ve been known to check out the local house listings when I’m on vacation to see how much it would cost to live there.
  • If I drive through a pretty neighborhood, I slow to a crawl so I don’t miss anything.
  • I’m always redecorating my house. It’s never “finished.”
  • There are certain movies I have watched repeatedly because of the houses featured in them.

If you agree with 3 or more of these, then you are definitely hooked on houses. You’ve come to the right place! Welcome to the club. :-)

This is absolutely me–almost every one is a yes. In fact, there is a house across the street from me I’d like to rescue right now. And I recognized the house in this picture immediately. lol. Love the site! (I’m working to create a blog, and I also loved your blogging q and a article! thanks).

Okay, so what if I did answer yes to all but one question. It’s okay … I’m not Hooked. I can stop any time I please — I simply CHOOSE not to. Besides, everybody does it. Don’t they? [Don't freak people -- I'm just having fun; although I did answer "yes" to all but one question (the one about spotting homes on vacation -- namely because I work for myself and haven't had a vacation since I can't remember).]

Yep. Took one look at the picture of the house at the top of the page and thought to myself “I’ve been in that house”. There’s a Sears kit house in the town I live in that looks amazingly like that house. I see an Open House sign and it just calls my name. I have been trying to figure out why for a number of years now. Love your blog and I’m sure I’ll be a frequent visitor.

I’ve been hooked on houses since I was a young child! When I go on vacation, I spend half my time looking at houses and the other half trying to figure out how I can move there permanently. My absolute favorite place to walk is Charleston, SC…I think I’ve been up and down every side street and back alley and never run out of things to see. Second favorite is Newport, RI. Nantucket is good, so is Cape Cod…then there’s Cape May…Sanibel…Santa Barbara, Carmel…Do I see a trend developing here?

I love your house. :] I’ve been obsessed with houses since I was a kid! My husband and I are currently building our dream house (three flor, five bed, six bath), but due to the economy, we may have to cut back! I’m very disappointed, because my husband and I have been saving up for years to build our perfect house for the kids… We have three; Alexis, 10, Sam, 7 and Amy, 4. Reading your blog makes me feel like there is more hope for us and our house. We just hope the economy gets better soon!

I found your site while googling for something and love it. I am originally from CT and my dad was a contractor growing up. I live in Manhattan Beach, CA now in a tiny beach house – one of the originals still left in town. My head spins when I see an old house, new house, etc. and the comment about – when you go to someones house your already redecorating it in your head – I do that all the time – I feel compelled to want to move stuff around. Can’t wait to go through the site- I already saw a bunch of houses I want!

Suddenly I discovered at the age of 60 that I was “Hooked On Houses. In addition to your prerequisites for being truly “hooked”, I also stop and take pictures of strangers’ homes during our driving trips. Once my husband couldn’t stop west of the Catskills on a two lane highway and I’ll never get over it although I only caught a glimpse. A house in heaven would look like this one. I think it was a 2-story wood frame house, painted entirely pale, pale lilac, with a porch across the front with numerous hanging baskets of pale lilac colored flowers. It was a rural area, so the house was set off by itself, and it looked like something out of a dream. If anyone knows where this house is exactly or has a photo of it, it would make this old lady’s day.

Love your newly found website, Julia. Thank You!!

Hi Julia,
If Mr. Linky croaks on you, you may already know this…you can go to his website and click on “Widgets” and click on the Meme for today. You will see the whole list of participants and their links. Then you can just right click on the link and select copy shortcut if you are compiling a list of those who are participating and signed up.
When it went down yesterday, I copied and pasted the links to a word doc. I got about half way through the list…then it started working, again so I stopped. It’s been my experience that even when Mr. Linky is down and not showing on the blog, you can still see all the participants and their links at this site under Widgets. I just saved what I had copied from his site, in case it went down for good. I just wanted to make sure you knew about that section on Mr. Linky where you can see everyone who participated and signed up and their link since it so far as been accessible even when Mr. Linky was not working. :-) Susan

I’m hanging my head in shame (or happiness that I’m not crazy!) I answered yes to all but 1!! I’d like to add another. When houses in my neighborhood come up for sale I jot down the realator and go look it up in hopes that they have good pics of the inside of the house! There’s also a real estate channel on our local cable station that shows current listings in the area in a continuous loop. Sometimes I watch that channel for a good hour. Finally I’m and HGTV Junkie. I also live for our towns annual Street of Dreams! Great site to feed my addiction (I don’t know if that’s good or bad) ha ha

JUlia, I suggested you check out Augusta, KY, and Ripley, OH, for some intriguing houses. I visited both again recently and you must see. Plus it’s such a nice drive along the Ohio River with a ferry ride across to Augusta and Ripley right up the highway 52 in Ohio. I volunteer to be your tour guide since I am on the far east side of Cincinnati. Julia, thank you so much for creating this forum. I found your site while searching the web for the Detroit home of my fav. “rock star” Jack White. Of course your site contains images of his super fab. “former home”, as well as the new one in Nashville. But beyond that search I was thrilled to find a haven for die hard “lookie Loos” such as myself. My interests in houses tends to the purist, and my faves are those in their most origional condition regardless of period or style. My faves. are carpenter folk victorians, rambling guilded age manses, prarie school and craftsmans, mid century moderns, and anything by that hottie Bart Prince. I have a few fun MLS links for yoy and will try to send them. Thanks Beautiful!!

I just found this site and love it! And I answered yes to every question. When we were kids my parents went (and took us) to open houses at grand old homes there’s no way we could have afforded, and after quitting time we’d walk around in unfinished new homes (at the stud stage) and try to figure out what all of the rooms were going to be. We have a friend who is a realtor send us the on-line listings daily for our town even when we’re not in house-buying mode. My husband has this “sickness” too but he tends more toward approaching people who are working on fixing up old houses in our neighborhood and trying to get a look inside, whereas I have more of a weakness for open houses. Here’s a question for you all — do you ever have “house dreams”? That’s when the centerpiece of your dream is some big, usually old (but sometimes contemporary, for me), really cool house that you’re living in and haven’t even discovered all of the rooms yet. These dreams are incredibly vivid and detailed, down to the pictures on the walls and the books on the shelves — but the houses are nothing like any place you’ve ever been, lived, or seen on TV/in movie. Both my husband and I experience this regularly (it’s rather pleasant and you hate to wake up).

I thought I was alone with my house dreams. I’ve even started a journal, documenting each home. One was a stone castlelike affair. I only got to the main room which was huge and nearly empty of furnishings. What I remember most is the entry[up three steps to door, and down 3 steps to main floor inside. Massive doors flanked by yellow mums[ I don't even like yellow mums, preferring lavendar ones.] Our minds are wondrous things!

3 or more?! I’m all of the above! And some I secretly thought I was the only one! I watched “No Way Out” with Kevin Costner, over and over again just to try to figure out the design of his girlfriend’s apartment. I would pause and make a sketch on paper…I dreamed living on a place like hers. No wonder I became an architect! Absolutely loooove your site.

How about the house from the movie “What Lies Beneath” with Harrison Ford. It’s great.
I thought I was the weirdo who checked the real estate listings daily and rewatched movies to view the white subway tile in the kitchens. (I did use the tile in my kitchen, only with the darker grout). Great site…..

No, seriously, this is MY list…I am crazy about real estate, love love love taking walks at night for the mentioned reason, always visit open houses or models in cities I visit, keep up with local listings and am the go to person when people in the hood want to know what something is worth. I get 100% on the quiz! I’ve even attended dreaded tupperware parties to get inside neighbor’s houses.

I discovered HoH a few days ago and have done little else since. My husband’s been called to the screen several times, also. We both watched ‘Housesitter” over and over for the yellow house. Okay, he might have been looking at Goldie and Dana at the same time — they’re two of his favorites.

My favorite movie for the sets is, “Far From Heaven,” with Julianne Moore and Dennis Quaid. The 1956 sets and clothing are marvelous.

Thank you for the fabulous site, I absolutely love it.

Only three?! I’m not sure there was three that did not answer yes to. Well there’s no doubt…..I’M HOOKED!!!!!!! I found Hooked on Houses all because I tried to find out more on the Home Alone house. I love to watch tv and movies for just to look at the houses. A few tv/movie houses I’m curious about are… the masion in Money Pit and the San Fransico home of the Tanner’s from Full House. Are these just sets or do the homes actually exist?

Love your blog! Yes, I’m hooked on houses since I’m in the real estate business :) .

Do you have anymore photos of the “Somethings Got To Give” beach house or a floorplan?

Hope you have a wonderful holiday season.

Thanks,

Wonderful to find all this….How about a movie house trifecta? Hanging Up has the awesome circular house on Angelo Dr. in it. Also it has Eve’s house and her mother’s house in Big Bear.

I take my dog for walks in other neighborhoods just so I can look at the houses that I haven’t seen lately. I love it when she has to poo right in front of a big grand old house, so I can stare a long time without looking like a stalker! (yes i clean it up) I also hope that the owner comes outside and invites me in for a tour.

I know the auditor’s website by heart, and his name of course. I can spend days on that site.
As houses go up for sale in my (and surrounding) neighborhoods, I keep the inside pictures for later reference.

I want to start a “don’t paint the woodwork” awareness program.
When I was a child, we had to “write a book” and mine was titled “i love houses, rainbows and stars.”
Thank you so much for this blog.

I came across this site while researching beach homes. I have really enjoyed seeing some of these homes. I loved the movie “Something’s Got To Give ” so much that I researched a painting found over the mantle in Erica’s bedroom to see if I could purchase it. After much searching and talking with the woman in charge of Kenton Nelson’s gallery, they put out a limited release giclee reproduction. They have released 60 or 65 for purchase. I purchased one and just love it. It is smaller than the one in the movie but framed it is beautiful. I hope this is helpful to others who loved it as much as I did!

I answered yes to all the questions. I love to decorate not just my house, but others too.
I look into people homes as I pass by, I get really excited if it’s contemporary. My family and friends come to my house and they get tired of watching HGTV that’s all I watch, building homes, decorating, buying, selling, etc.
Glad to know it’s people that has the same interest as I do.

TOTALLY hooked! As a kid, playing Barbie was much more about the townhouse than the doll. I constantly made “houses” in the driveway by using the hose and any ropes I could find to make “floor plans”. Dad was a real estate broker and Sundays were model home days. And the thing about dusk being the best time of day? I’m with you on that, I used to LOVE walking around the neighborhood at dinnertime (back in the days when a ten year old could do that) because I could see into people’s houses!

I’m hooked on houses in a slightly different way than you. I have always loved the architectural features of fine homes since my background is remodeling, mill work, furniture making. I cannot go into a home without admiring (or criticizing) the spaces, windows, doors, millwork and the quality of the installation.
One of my customers pointed me to one of the homes featured in your site and wanted me to simulate the balusters and newels in that home -which we did.
Great site and great resource.

I lived in Paris for the past 10 years and I made a hobby of veiwing apartments. I am now living in Long Island and we are renovating a 1900 tudor home. My friends say I move just to decorate and i should be a real estate agent.
They pulled HGTV from our local cable and I am in withdrawal. Thanks for giving me a new outlet.

I didn’t need this quiz—but I said yes to every question. The “Something’s Gotta Give” house has had me in it’s grasp for quite sometime. Not pratical for where I live in the northeast where it is cccc-cold and snowy a lot, but such a fantasy. I have frozen that on my screen and literally picked it like a chicken carcass. Guess that started for me when I was young and even though you couldn’t freeze frame something I knew every knook and cranny of Mary Richard’s Minneapolis apt. Love your blog!

By the way, have you checked out ‘Barbie’s Haunted Mansion’ over at Lovelylisting.com? It’s a beautiful old Victorian in Iowa, and it looks like someone has bought it and is going to restore it as they have done 19 others in the area. It’s a really happy ending for a house that has been decorated rather horridly. :)

Hi Julia,
Just got back from seeing “It’s Complicated”, again! Ok, you know you’re a true house junkie when you go back to see a film at the theater for the house shots. I love the movie and the story line, but the second time around I could really study the interiors – I love California style! From the Stanhope hotel lobby, her mouth watering Bakery, to her lovely, warm ranch home with that incredible garden! I think there should definitely be a sequel, just so we can see the addition!!
This movie did for Santa Barbara what “Something’s Gotta Give” did for the Hamptons.
Hope all is well and keep up the good work,

I’m definitely hooked on houses! It’s so funny how you mention walking at dusk. As a child my Mother and I use to go for rides at night &we always loved being able to see inside peoples houses, just to see what they looked like. As an adult I still enjoy it just as much. My husband laughs at me, but I have a luv for houses and decorating. Wouldn’t it be great if they had open houses on streets, where you could just go in and look around other peoples houses?
I also just love looking at real estate listings w/ no intention of buying. I luv to see what the houses look like inside & luv when they still have their decor up. That’s always a plus! And, of course my husband and I have no intention of buying.
I just recently found your site and I’m so glad I did as I luv it. I’m not nuts after all! LOL.

During a Holiday Lights in my historic neighborhood (grilled hot dogs and hot Dr. Pepper are served from my yard)..I had to run in the house to get something and a couple ladies were standing right at the front window, wondering about something. I answered them, and they said ohh do you know the ppl who live here? I said I do! ha

Do you pick the area you will go trick or treating in with your kids, because you are just dying to look inside the houses when they open the door? I just can’t help MY SELF! LOL!

I can not believe I am not the only person in the world that does this.I got so embarassed ones because someone asked me where I was from and I had to admit I lived in a different town about 30 minutes away.I couldn’t lie with my five kids standing there waiting for thier treat.

Just curious… I tried a search within your site but did not find it. Do you have any info on the Whidbey Island House that Ashley Judd and Bruce Greenwood used for their home in the movie Double Jeopardy? Love your site by the way… it is officially on my google homepage. :)

I love, love, love your site!!! I was looking up house plans for the Home Alone House and stumbled upon you! We have the same taste in movie houses! I actually have watched Home Alone, Mr. Mom and Meet me in St. Louis over and over and paused my VCR so I could draw out the house plans! I love the combo of old movies and cool homes!

I know you are busy, but I have a few movie home suggestions you might like and I would love to have you do a post on them!!!

Every Girl Should Be Married (color enhanced) with Cary Grant. An adorable story of a shop girl trying to catch Cary Grant. There is a lot of footage of her adorable little cottage from many views.

Our Miss Brooks with Eve Arden. She’s a single teacher who is living with an old lady in a darling house and then she finds a man she’s trying to get and a dream house that she “day dreams” and sees it all decorated. It is adorable!

She’s having a baby with Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth McGovern. Their home is classic and cute. The story is darling.

Foul Play with Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase. Her apartment is adorable! It’s mid 70s eclectic, but so cozy and cute.

It’s a Wonderful Life! I love how Donna Reed transforms the old mansion and also her mother’s home and Jimmy Stewarts home.

The new Miracle on 34th Street Catalog house. Oh my gosh, it’s to die for!

On Moon Light Bay and By the Light of the Silvery Moon, two Dorris Day movies, the second is the sequel to the first. Their home is soooo cute! The stories are adorable too.

Fried Green Tomatoes and Driving Miss Daisy. Two Jessica Tandy movies with amazing homes!

I know I’ve listed a lot here and don’t expect you to post on any of them, but if you haven’t seen these movies, you’d probably really enjoy them! Keep up the awesome work, your blog is so fun and inspirational!!!

Hugs, Sharon

HI julia, we may and it is nowhere near definite, have the opportunity to move to Tuscaloosa if my husband decides to take a job opportunity there; he hasn’t even had an interview and it may come to nothing, however I have been trying to research the area and naturally everyone who lives there loves it! We live in Sydney in a beautiful area with water views and I was wondering what you can tell me about Tuscaloosa and the real estate and lifestyle in that area? Kind Regards, Wendy.

I’m definitely hooked! Many times when we are driving around the city looking at houses, I’ll say….Oh, this house has a great kitchen, or this house has great colors, etc. That’s from being an MLS junkie! :)

Yep, another house junkie here. I knew I was slightly obsessed, but taking your quiz..you have me nailed perfectly. I found myself nodding vigorously. I found this site because I was looking for the address of Serendipity (house in Nights in Rodanthe) so I could look it up on google maps – one of my many house hobbies! Glad to have found you!

I stumbled across your blog whilst looking for details of the “Housesitter” house; a Google search I have performed many times over the past decade or so, never finding any information. How wonderful to FINALLY read about a house I’ve longed to know more about. Thank you.

Yes. I can answer a resounding “yes!” to every single one of your questions, and even have one of my own. Do you have a list a properties in your head that you think of as yours? (My list is called Homes I Will One Day Own.)

Thanks for a great read. How delightful to know that I am not alone in my house obsession, and to find Others of My Kind.

I love your blog! I definitely am hooked on houses. I have one that you could definitely add to your list. When I was about 10ish or so, my best friend and I thought it would be cool to walk down to the new development where they were building these big, brand new homes. We would ring their doorbells and ask to use their bathroom or have a drink of water just to see their house inside. It was definitely risky. We also would go inside of newly costructed homes being built and walk around to see the inside. I know, we were crazy.

Oh my….I think I’m hooked on houses! I LOVE looking in people’s windows-from the road, of course! I’ve also checked out many, many, many interior decorating magazines and books, and often think of “before” and “after” decor, if it were ME doing the decorating!
I received a nice treat once-a few years back, a nice brick home showed no signs of life-nothing in the yard, no flowers, no lights, just, no life that we could see, and we passed this house to go home many times a week.
We began to notice signs of life-someone new was living there! Week after week, we noticed addition after addition to the yard-beautiful flowers and tasteful yard ornaments were popping up everywhere! One night while driving home, my hubby decided we would stop and let the new owners know that we noticed all that they had done. My treat is that this older couple was ever so friendly, and the wife took me for a tour thru her lovely home! Her decor inside was as pleasant, if not more so, as her outdoor decor! It really was a treat! :)

Great quiz! I said yes to 11/12. I always thought I was weird, but I’m so happy there are others who do the same things I do! If a movie has a really great house, I’ll buy it even if I didn’t like the movie. I dream about building a house with a floorplan like in Freaks and Geeks, just updated and altered a bit.

I’m soooo glad I found this site. I’m obsessed with houses but not really in a sick way. I always say that looking at houses is like porn but I exagerate. I live in a tiny, very strangely designed house built in 1910 in San Jose, California. I’m working on it little by little.

I took the little quiz above and I passed….or failed…….either way I’m definately one that is hooked. I love old houses but I’m also intrigued by some modern homes as well. Thank you for this site. Woohooo!!!!!!

Our inspiration is Alvin and Dave and thier incredible cottage home and community. http://www.oldmillcrossing.com if anyone has any ideas or feedback or would like to get involved? I am so hooked on houses… and so relieved to find that I’m not the only one believing that houses are an actual character (if not the most important) in films and TV shows. I’d like to thank you for the pictures from “The Holiday”. I hadn’t watch the film, but the pictures of the cottage are really inspiring. It gave me ideas for the fireplace I would like to have in my kitchen!
