A reader named Maria wrote, “Thought I’d share this cottage in the Swedish region of Dalarna where I just spent Christmas week with my family. The house is beautiful and in many ways reflects the traditional style of the region.” Not only is the cottage enchanting, but so are its surroundings…
It’s in the mountain community of Sälen in Dalarna County, Sweden, which is a popular alpine ski resort area near the Norwegian border.
A bit of trivia I can’t resist sharing: U2 filmed the video for their hit song “New Year’s Day” in Sälen in 1982, looking very cold (and young!) as they lipsynched in the snow. You can watch it on Vimeo:
This house is known as Avagården, and it’s currently on the market.
The listing explains (roughly translated), “The buildings on the property originally stood in Ava Parish in Nordmalingsfjärden in Västerbotten but were moved here more recently. The timbered house was built in the mid-1800s but finished here in 2007.”
This beautiful clock cabinet is an original feature from 1857, when the house was built:
Departures Magazine wrote about the house: “This four-bedroom home has its origins in the 19th century, though its current structure is relatively new, with completion in 2007. Priced at SEK 11.5 – EUR 1.2 million – this Alpine-like retreat offers around 160 square metres of living space, including three all-important wet rooms for winter and a large country kitchen.”
The agent says, “It’s a beautiful, luxurious accommodation with expansive views of nature for enjoyment of the mountains. Hjorton and sea buckthorn in late summer. Cranberries and mushrooms in autumn. Peaceful and quiet. Unwind from everyday life. Alpine skiing, horseback riding, fishing, cycling, and hiking.” Sounds good to me!
Check the Sotheby’s listing for more photos and information about Avagården.
I love learning about places like this from my readers in other countries. Thanks to Maria for sharing it with us! Looks like a special place to spend the winter holidays, doesn’t it?
My private blog is where I shared my Christmas photos this year. I’ll leave them up for a few weeks if you still want to see them. Hope to see you over there! 🙂
