Singer Sara Evans Selling Her Sweet Home in Alabama

Singer Sara Evans Selling Alabama House | hookedonhouses.netCountry singer-songwriter Sara Evans, who lives with husband Jay Barker and their kids in Mountain Brook, Alabama, gave HGTV a tour of their family home last year. Now she’s selling it, so let’s take a look…

Here’s a screenshot of Sara on her front porch while HGTV was filming there:

The house sits on a double lot and is bigger than it looks from the outside at 3,500 sq ft.

Anyone remember when she was on an episode of HGTV Design Star? The contestants went to her house to ask about her decorating style and she told them “Shabby Chic” and “Southern Elegance.” (You can revisit my recap of that episode from 2008 here.)

She seems like a really down-to-earth and fun person who is devoted to her family.

She talked about her daughters’ bedroom on her blog A Real Fine Place:

“All three of our girls share a bedroom. It is a big room by normal standards, but with three girls it can get crowded really quickly. We have a beautiful king bed that all three girls share, (sweet huh?) and also a built-in double bed that is off the floor with a big play space underneath. Actually, it’s a storage place for our youngest girl to put her massive collection of stuffed animals (‘stuffies’).”

She posted a photo of the girls’ room on Instagram and mentioned that it was decorated by Lisa Flake of Caldwell Flake Interiors.

They moved into this house after their 2008 wedding with seven kids between them, and People magazine reported: “With just four bedrooms, they knew the house would be a tight squeeze, but Evans didn’t consider that a drawback. ‘The point was to bring the families together, and it’s a lot easier to do that in a smaller house,’ the singer says.”

Check out the message left on the blackboard-painted walls in the playroom — cute:

In an interview she gave about her new album, she says, “My life is Hannah Montana,” referring to the former Disney Channel sitcom about a singer who leads a double life as a glamorous star one day and a normal kid the next, “because I have the best of both worlds.”

Sara gave HGTV a tour of her home last fall. I totally missed it, but she posted a behind-the-scenes video that shows outtakes from their day of shooting. In it, she laughs and says, “This room is all about me. Me, me, me!” And plays the drums for the cameras:

(You can watch the video on YouTube if it doesn’t play for you here.)

This is a pretty home, but do the ceilings appear low, or is it just me? Also, the downstairs hallway looks dark. While the shared bedroom situation seemed ok at the time of Sara’s blog post, I think it would become a problem as the kids start to grow up and crave their privacy. I’m not surprised the home is for sale. A big, rambling country home would be great for this huge family.

    Sara’s home is really nice
Some nice pops of color and fun plus seems like you could chill there

  3. Laura says

I guess I’m out of it – I’ve never heard of Sara Evans! The house is not my taste, but I like her quote about having a smaller house so the family can be together. The idea of every kid in his own room, plugged in to some electronic device, is depressing.

I forgot to mention she was on “Dancing with the Stars” a few seasons ago, too, so maybe some people would recognize her from that. I always admire people who are brave enough to go on that show!

i love mountain brook…my son lives in birmingham in another beautiful area…but mountain brook is my favorite. my sister’s MIL lived there prior to being put in a nursing home. did you know that’s where natalee holloway was from? i recently read her mother’s book and apparently the mother and husband (not natalee’s real dad) have divorced since natalee’s disappearance….such a sad situation!

a couple of years ago i saw jay barker in wal mart (of all places) doing a book signing….although he is from Alabama (the school) and we are all Auburn fans, my SIL is a big Alabama fan so I got an autographed copy for him from Jay. Hope this doesn’t sound weird but his aftershave smelled delicious….I wish I knew what he wore so I could get some for my husband!

thanks for this interesting post…I always love to see houses “close to home”.

It’s so fun getting additional details from readers like this. How else would we know how good his aftershave smells? Love it! Thanks, Judy. :-)

  5. Hungry, uninvited dinner guest says

That’s awesome that I know where she lives now! I’m gonna pop in for dinner some night! I’m sure they won’t mind. Have you seen some of the recipes she posts on her blog? Dee-lish!!!!!

    • says

With all those kids she’s feeding already, I’m sure she wouldn’t mind one more guest at the table. Ha. She does look like a good cook!

  6. Bev says

She had a song with Vince Gill that I remember really liking. I think it is refreshing to see someone so successful live in a smaller home. Well to me it would be huge but I don’t have 7 kids. Though that price is forever out of my range.

    • Hungry dinner guest says

That song with Vince is called “No Place That Far” and was her very first #1 single. On Sara’s newest album “Slow Me Down”, she teams up with Vince again on the track called “Better Off”. It’s an amazing song that showcases her “country” voice! Check it out!

  7. says

I so remember seeing Sara’s house on HGTV…she gave a wonderful tour and loved her sense of humor…Whoever buys this house is one lucky person….it is filled with so much charm…

    • says

I’m so mad I missed that, Shirley. Would have loved to have seen it but had to settle for the outtakes (which were pretty entertaining themselves)!

  8. Jen M. says

Her decorating is pretty awful. Particularly that room with the turquoise velvet couch. And the girls’ room. I love color, but it’s just not done well here.

  9. says

I think the house is beautiful! I like the idea of having 7 kids in a smaller space…more conducive to adjusting I’d guess. Do you know if she’s with the guy that she was married to when on DWTS? There was an issue at the time re: kids being molested, etc. I can’t remember which season she was on.

She seems very down to earth and “real” ~ that’s always a plus in my book! :) Wish I had seen her on HGTV…not sure how I missed it. Thanks so much for sharing!

P.S. I do love the house that was used for “Message in a Bottle”. Can you even imagine having that much money spent on it to upgrade, etc., and then wanting it back to the “before” ? With Kevin Costner and Paul Newman in the same movie it just has to be a favorite! :)

  10. Susan says

I think the house looks like it was professionally decorated — which it was, and that makes me sad. Where is her personality? I bet Sarah is a very genuine person; no Gwyneth she!

But when I look at her home, I’m not blown away, and this is why. I feel like all of these celebrity houses are designed to win props from either other designers or companies that manufacture goods for the design trade. These homes are so perfectly “over-designed” that it doesn’t look like a real live-in-the-flesh family lives there.

Before I click on your posts on celebrities, I try to visualize what the designer has done, and I’m usually pretty close. For me, the million dollar home has turned into an in stock, on the shelf design brand. All of these multimillionaire homes are BASICALLY ALL THE SAME; just variations on a theme. Grim. To be perfectly frank, I’d rather live in your house, Julia!

  11. Maria says

It is just me, or do the stairs lead up to the black dungeon of death? Or a the ceiling with a flat screen tv? Deathstar? Alternate dimension?

Even without that though, house somehow seems flat and meh to me.

  12. Kim says

I remember when Sara Evans divorced her first husband. Around that time she left Dancing With the Stars season 3 week 5 to deal with it all, which I don’t blame her.

I like her house. It actually looks like a normal family home. Instead of those over the top houses other celebrities have owned.

  13. Laura says

Mountain Brook is a very expensive area, but it’s so charming and many parts of it are within walking distance to shops and restaurants. Lots of people who can afford it here trade off square footage for the charm of the whole area. It was one of the original suburbs of Birmingham when it was in its steel city prime and most of the homes date to the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Courtney Cox is from Mountain Brook also and I believe she still has a house there.

  14. Teresa says

I so expected to love this house when I saw the exterior but the interior just didn’t wow me. I wasn’t crazy about how the house was styled and furnished especially the family room. Perhaps it was just how the photo was taken but the stairs seemed like they just went straight up into a big hole. It just didn’t show well in the pictures.
