Yuck. That's pretty bad. If they weren't actually in the foundation and spoiling the water supply (well water?) I'd say they were overreacting. The house I grew up in had a smaller garter snake den under a tree in the front yard. We'd play with the baby snakes, keep them as pets, and watch them harmlessly sun themselves in the hedge. I think I was bitten once or twice, but no big deal. They're harmless. Live and let live.

But in the house? Yeah, I couldn't take that. Definitely too close for comfort.

My mother, who passed last year at the age of 94, lived on a high hill in the Mojave Desert, she and her husband built a beautiful home 40 years ago, at 4,000 feet overlooking the Antelope Valley in California. Rattlers loved to come down and drink from the outside spiget. My mother had her hoe ready, she would just aim and cut off their heads. Then she called Bob Wyan, her neighbor, of Bob's Big Boys fame. He loved snake meat. Ha, what's in that hamburger, you say!

Last Spring, after lots and lots of rain, I went outside and saw on the lawn this long black thing. I crept next to it, it was a six foot garter snake, sunning itself. I picked it up, with a broom handle, it curled itself around the broom, fell off and then I got it up again and took it to the woods at the back of the house where it slithered off.

Snakes are okay. They serve a purpose. Too bad about these folks. I really feel for them.

I think the house *should* be condemned. It's definitely not liveable. When a house is condemned, how does that work with the person's loan on it? Just curious.

While I understand that snakes have their place in the ecological system, I do NOT want to live with them, see them when I go outside to hang my clean sheets in the sun or to sit with a book & a glass of lemonade in my backyard or chop them up while mowing the lawn. Even more, I do not want to drink their "musk" or listen to them slithering around in my WALLS while I'm trying to SLEEP! Can you imagine?!

I know this family has learned a very difficult lesson. Firstly, always pay the few hundred bucks it costs to hire a private home inspector. Yes, the loan offerer has someone inspect the house, but they're just eyeballing it really. Private inspectors crawl under the crawl space, check the water, pipes, etc. This would have been detected before the purchase had they done that. Secondly, I think before walking away from the loan, I would have tried to find a natural predator (pigs are good snake eaters). It might have been inconvenient and taken awhile, but then they wouldn't have a foreclosure & BK on their credit report for the next 10 years. Some of the responsibility lies with the family, most of it lies with the lender & the realtor as well. It's a sad situation.

"Wouldn’t an inspector notice it?"

Bingo! That's exactly what I was wondering too!

Didn't an inspector check out the house and notice that the snakes were a problem? Hellllloooooo?

I'd look into to suing the realtor! Especially since it is a health hazard for their small children and her being pregnant.
