Every time a new show that has anything remotely to do with houses is about to premiere, I get a flurry of e-mails from PR folks asking me to please tell you about it and encourage you to watch. Today I got one from HGTV designer David Bromstad that was pretty clever because it got my attention–and cracked me up. He wrote:
Hi Julia!
I wanted to let you in on a little secret: I’m joining HGTV Design Star this year (hot soup!!) I’m going to be mentoring the new cast and I’m super psyched.
See you on the new season of HGTV Design Star (Monday, July 11 at 9/8c). Let me tell you honey, you’re not gonna want to miss it!
xoxo
First of all, I’m excited about the return of “Design Star” and hoping for the best. Maybe his presence will improve things this year (crossing my fingers). But if that news hadn’t been enough to grab my attention, check out this photo he attached, with the note, “I think we make a fierce couple, don’t you?”
Ha! Pretty clever, HGTV PR folks! You got my attention this time. And it’s nice to know David keeps a photo of me in his dressing room.
Will you be watching “Design Star” this summer? Here were my thoughts after watching it last year: “Who Executed All the Geese?”

Julia!! You need to blow up and frame the photo of him holding your photo! That is TOO FUNNY!

Oh, that photo of him holding your picture = awesome!!
I’m not a huge fan of design star for some reason, but if he’s on it, I might just have to watch. I love David!
Oh.. That’s sooooo funny!
This made my morning!

Love it! Not a bad way to start your day….smile.
Very clever! And short (and sweet). A picture does say a thousand words, doesn’t it? The personalization did it and those PR folks should win an award for it.
Oh! hilarious! Love it, love it….
I love it! Someone in PR deserves a raise or bonus at the very least!
I like Design Star – usually- so I will be watching to see what they offer. Beats NCIS reruns!
I too was disappointed with the last season, so it didn’t keep my attention. I definitely didn’t like the shorter format… I felt it was all too rushed and we really didn’t get to connect with the designers. I’ll give it a whirl again though, cos you know, I’m hooked on houses
Lx
Wow, Julia! Just think about it….David Bromstad knows who you are!!!
You lucky duck! I love him, by the way….he is one of my faves on HGTV. He truly is a star!
You are a hot commodity! What a lot of fun – so glad you shared this!

That’s GREAT!!!
I turned it on to watch and didn’t care for it (too hokey?) so switched channels pretty quickly. Sorry, I have a short attention span!
That is awesome!! What a great fan photo. I would make a copy and slap it right on my workspace desk. He is about the only one I care for anymore on HGTV, I hope the show is better with him.
That is just so cool! He has a terrific sense of humor, doesn’t he? How awesome that he’s a fan of yours! But then, who wouldn’t be if you love houses like we all do.
I love David Bromstad but haven’t watched Design Star much, since he won. I think Color Splash is great and whenever I have a chance to watch it, I do.
This is so cute and clever! We are fans of the show even if it is a little “train-wrecky” at times
That is hilarious! And congrats, now go print out this photo and frame it I’d say!! Janell
That is too funny! I enjoy Color Splash and really hope Design Star will be better with him on it!
Thanks for the giggle! Very clever PR move for sure…AND effective!
I love David Bromstad! I admit, I had made certain assumptions about him when he was on the first Design Star (you know, designer, muscle-y, tattooed, etc.), but he’s actually a big dork! In the best, most charming way possible, of course. Which makes me adore him even more.
Oh, honey! I hate to burst your bubble–David’s cheating on ya! I saw this same photo of David holding another blogger’s picture. But I bet he loves you the best!
Well, that’s kind of shocking. Maybe I’ll get him back by hanging a photo of John Gidding in my room.
I say use the photo as next year’s Christmas card!
That PR person really earned their paycheck with that promo ….
I watch Design Star and I’m not sure why I do since it’s on the lame side. Not a fan of David’s show but I’ll give it a try.
I’m still waiting for the day he shows up in the latest DVD from Raging Stallion.
Oh my goodness, you’ve got to frame that and put it on your desk. Too fun! I’ve always liked David and his show~ I always love seeing what original art he’s going to create for the homes he makes over.
Hi Julia,
I love your blog as well as David! I think this great and I agree that you need to blow up the pic of him holding your picture and frame it! (Very clever PR indeed)Oh and don’t forget to show us a pic in your house of it!! Thanks for sharing!
Adorable! You should take a picture of you holding the picture of him holding a picture of you!
kisses
Etta
Last year about did me in….with Design Star…but if David will be there….I will have to tune in……..
That’s hilarious!
I love him! I’ll definitely be watching again this season, even though last season was such a disappointment.
This is AWESOME! You are a true celebrity Julia:) And those PR guys do know what they are doing…because it was on here, I will check it out:) Have a wonderful day!
That’s so cool for you. You are truly viewed…he has good taste!
Love it! Now you need a shot of you holding a framed version of that pic in YOUR studio
uh get your little paws off my man;) my gay man, but never mind that:) isn’t he just the best julia?? seriously i have the biggest crush ever. so excited to see him in action again:)
Love it! I really like Design Star and David – not so much that I seek the show out but am also very happy if they happen to be on when I sit down to watch TV.
If you can contact these PR people, please tell them to tell their producers this:
Sorry, but any way the designers should get their inspirations for decorating from
art, rugs, chairs, inspiration piece, etc instead of those stupid themes they
came up with last season. It was so annoying and not realistic.
Oh my gosh, this cracks me up!!!
I think that’s awesome! I love it when they have a sense of humor. I will be tuning in for sure. I really enjoyed last season…some funny elements there as well.
Thanks for sharing, Julia!
What a great PR tactic – and it worked, we are all talking about it! Very clever – nice to see someone at HGTV had an original idea for a change (I am pretty fed up with them, it seems like the only thing that is ever on is House Hunters. I like HH, but not 24/7).
David is adorably nerdy but talented and although I have seen only 10-12 episodes of ColorSplash, it seems they prefer their drama to be from the reveal rather than shenanigans in the interim, like some other shows.
That is brilliant! I love that you shared it.
For the past two seasons, I’ve had someone review Design Star for my blog. But she was so frustrated by the last season, I’m not sure I’ll get her to do it again! Hopefully she will! It’s fun to track it and watch all the responses on Twitter.
OMG, that is awesome! And he is SOOOOO cute!!!!
How fun that you got an email from David Bromstad. I’m not a fan of his show and Design Star has gotten kind of boring to me so I won’t be watching the new season.
LOVE David Bromstad! How cool is that that PR peeps email you to promote their shows! Clearly you’re on their radar!
Hey, Julia, that’s so cute! I know Layla got one too. Fun way to promote a new show & yes, I can’t wait for the new Design Star. Love watching the drama!
Hey, HGTV! Send me an email & I’ll promote for you too!
That is mad clever. How can you say no to that?
Omg..Check you out! That is so cool. You have the best job ever. Really ….
Very cute! I can see how it got your attention. I will be watching. I thought last year was pretty lame….but I watched every bit of it and have to say…I love Emily (the winner)’s show. I don’t know how they managed to pick the right person because I thought a lot of the challenges weren’t so good. Here’s hoping it will be better with David involved.
Kudos to his pr folks – that’s very clever. And of course they should send out to you. *grin* I’m waiting for you to send one back with you holding the frame saying, “Yes, yes, we do!”
Oh my gosh that is AWESOME!! I love David Bromstad, and it’s great to hear he’ll be on Design Star!! I saw him in Key West once, and it took everything in my hubby to keep me from running up to David and giving him a big hug!! Love the picture he sent you!
What a hoot!
Well done, HGTV peeps! Glad to see they’re on the ball since the programming people don’t seem to be. The new crop of shows on HGTV is awful. Here’s hoping Design Star is better!
Too Funny! Write back and tell him you want a to have a guest appearance:)
So jealous!!!
Very cool!!!
Love it!
You should play hard to get & see if they will invite you on as a guest judge.
Design Star last year was a big snooze. The challenges were ridiculous (myriad versions of “take your inspiration from this basket of fruit, but don’t use the color or shape in your design”) and the judging was even worse. Why they felt it was important to keep their deliberations — which was the only way we could have understood some of the gross stupidity they exhibited — a great big secret was beyond rational explanation. Then, when they actually showed up for a Trump model challenge, it was too obvious that Mark Burnett had ruined the show.
Too cute!! David Bromstad is a doll! And the PR Department is pretty clever! I too am hoping for a better season with more talent and less drama.
That’s just too funny. This pic of you? Hilarious (and kinda creepy)! I’ve really been missing Design Star, so I am pumped it’s coming back, and with a hero to boot. I could live in his babushka studio in Miami. (Well, maybe just visit from time to time. The colors are, well, very Miami-ish.)
I LOVE it! Too funny! He is so gorgeous and talented. I love watching his shows. I will definitely be tuning in as you have turned me into an even bigger house aficionado.
That’s great!! Love it.. I would enlarge the photo myself and hang it up.. Nice.
I don’t know if anything can win me back after the last two seasons. Maybe I am just tired of HGTV in general. Haven’t watched any of the new shows.
I love David! In fact, the season he won (the first) was by far the best. Then, it seemed to just gradually go downhill each year after that. Last season was ridiculous. All the drama was bordering on “reality TV”. I like Vern’s and LOVE Candace’s respective shows. But, as beautiful as Genevieve is (both physically and personality- wise), in my opinion she should not be judging someone else’s design capabilities as hers leaves a lot to be desired. I think it’s important for the judges to honestly judge the designs, but last season I think Vern was overly stern and sometimes somewhat mean in his interactions with the contestants. And, I saw a side of Candace I had not seen before (I like her upbeat playful attitude exhibited on her own show.). Everything probably was orchestrated, however, to make the show more interesting. Overall, HGTV has changed. It once was my favorite channel, and my TV almost always was on HGTV. Very seldom now.
I would keep the photo of David forever! He’s one of my favorites.
Love David!!! That is so awesome!!!!
Omgosh that is amazing. I love David, he is a doll!!! Looking forward to the new show!!! I watched HGTV’d and I was not impressed, but I will give it a few more chances before making a final decision!! Kathysue
You’re famous!!!! I don’t watch Design Star (what’s the point) but I love David! He’s so cute and a really nice person….even though his work is soooo 80′s!
Photo looks like a publicity shot for a gay website – inappropriate.
I love the note and photo. David is the best thing about Design Star. Well, him and Emily; I like her. Hopefully his joining the series will help.
How fun…..I used to love that show until Anthony won…he is a bit of an angry designer….curious.
LOVE IT!
What on earth does hot soup have to do with anything? What an akwardly random grouping of words.
I hope he is replacing vern Yip. That guy is creepy.
That is so sweet! I love David and I love the way his personality really comes thru on TV. You can tell he is a lovely person! Can’t wait for Design Star! I hope it becomes more about the design and less about the drama…we have enough drama on regular reality TV!
What a cute message. Is David asian?
Holy guacamole! Personal e-mails from HGTV stars! And to think I can say I knew ya back when . . . .
