Sunday Open House: Historic Airlie Mansion in Melbourne

Airlie Mansion-Australia 1

One of the great things about the Internet is that we no longer have to wait until Sunday afternoons to snoop inside houses that are for sale–and we can attend Open Houses as far away as Melbourne, Australia. A listing that caught my eye this week was for this historic home that was featured at A View on Design.

Airlie Mansion-Australia 2

Airlie Mansion was built in 1891 and is reportedly worth over $10 million today. A Prime Minister lived here in the 1920s. The grand old house actually stands in the center of what is now a thriving business district, but it has “extensive courtyards and outdoor terraces.” Take a look!

The owners have made this old house with period details look surprisingly modern.

Airlie Mansion 4

There’s a “modern European kitchen with Smeg appliances” in here someplace, but it’s cleverly disguised–doesn’t really shout “kitchen!” to me:

The master bedroom:

Would you want to live in an historic home like this, right in the heart of a business district? I’m thinking you would have to be someone who doesn’t mind getting a lot of attention, because there would be no blending into this neighborhood. Your house would definitely stand out.

I’d live in this house in a second. Isn’t it fantastic?

Traci October 23, 2010 at 7:24 pm

Wow! It’s gorgeous!!!

You’re right. It would be quite hard to blend in, so I don’t think I would actually want to live there. It was fun seeing it though! Happy weekend, Julia…

Hi Julia love the outside of this building but I could not see myself live here – I don’t like to stand out in a crowd…. do they cook in that kitchen? hope you are having a wonderful weekend….. Regards Esther from cold and wet Sydney…. PS with all the rain we’ve been having you should see my garden the roses have gone crazy beautiful…..

Luciane at Homebunch.com October 23, 2010 at 7:36 pm

Hi, Julia!

The house is amazing. I never saw a bed like that one. Very nice! But I don’t think I would live in a house with sky highs around me… no privacy at all. nah… :-)

I was about to feature this exact same place on my blog!! How funny! Yes I couldn’t live there either, I wouldn’t be surprised if it is bought and turned into a museum or such!

Jess @ Frugal with a Flourish October 23, 2010 at 8:36 pm

I love that living room – but the kitchen is so stark! Not sure if it is my style…

Hello Julia – nice to see some aussie content with you :) its a fab house but the location no longer works for a private residence …. we have made an offer on a house yesterday – it’s a fixer upper on 13 acres – cross fingers …. best to you le

Wow… the actual house is gorgeous… I’d change a couple of things… mainly the kitchen… although I imagine it’s a uber pricey one, it looks like it belongs in a restaurant, not a home (I think I’ve said this before about other homes featured)… But the one thing I couldn’t get my head around is the situation of the house… it looks like it’s been badly photo-shopped in… although I think I would suck it up to live in such a magnificent old house… it’s a shame the developers didn’t look at this beautiful building when building the business district around it… Lx

Beautiful house! I love all of the different details, but that kitchen is really lacking. The cabinets really are discuised. That kitchen would definitely need to be redone.

Amanda @ Serenity Now October 24, 2010 at 8:25 am

How interesting about its location! That last photo makes it look as if the house was edited into the financial district. I can really appreciate the gorgeous fireplace and all of those big windows. So much light. :)

OK, I can’t help but comment on the writers description of it’s location. “It stands out like a dog’s ____” . I have to admit, I laughed when I read this!
She’s right, the location wouldn’t be my choice, but you can’t argue with the beauty of the home.

I laughed at you laughing. I can’t see the origninal comment, but I bet it was an Aussie that said it. I live in Melbourne and don’t know this property – I need to get out more. Thanks for the sensational blog Julia – love it, love it, love it

hookedonhouses October 25, 2010 at 7:07 am

She’s referring to the post I linked to where the rest of the photos are shown. And yes, it’s an Aussie! :-)

Heidi Stefanc October 24, 2010 at 10:29 am

All I can say is WOW….. I love the foyer and staircase. I would love to live here.

Deb October 24, 2010 at 2:33 pm

I can see myself living in this house. But like most people, would have to redo the kitchen to make it a little more “homey” and family friendly.

Susan Howell October 24, 2010 at 4:12 pm

Absolutely beautiful!

Dawn October 25, 2010 at 10:01 am

As much as I love the home – beautiful! – I don’t like the location and couldn’t live there.

I need privacy. If I’m going to spend so much money on a home (even if I’m not), I would get a house in location like that no matter how beautiful it is.

But I can admire it from afar. : )

Bertie October 26, 2010 at 7:32 am

Strange that even tho they are in a fishbowl, there are no curtains!

Angela October 28, 2010 at 10:00 am

I want this house!! I would have put in curtains, tho! No snoopers at night! I love it – and at business district there looks pretty nice, so that’s great! :)

Cate October 29, 2010 at 11:51 pm

Ok – I know this house. The photographs are a bit deceptive: it isn’t exactly in the middle of the CBD, it’s very close to the Botanic Gardens and Albert Park Lake. The location’s actually quite lovely. St Kilda Road, although there are lots of office buildings and residential apartment buildings is a beautiful, tree-lined boulevard. It’s just over the road from the suburb of South Yarra, which is one of the best in Melbourne. All-in-all, I’d love to live in this area!

hookedonhouses October 30, 2010 at 8:18 am

Interesting! Thanks, Cate! -Julia

Love the house, hate the kitchen, loathe the location! And whose bright idea was it to paint all the woodwork WHITE???

ShabbyChick February 16, 2011 at 3:49 pm

Reminds me of….”one of these things is not like the other….”! Hate the location of this house, hate the kitchen, and the modernist twist in some of the rooms. Not the direction I would have gone with it. I say NO.

Julie A May 16, 2011 at 8:29 pm

I used to work right next to this house and never realised people lived there, I thought it was a fancy office building!
