My Grandma & Me

by hookedonhouses on July 23, 2010

Hazel holding JulieThose of you who follow me on Facebook know this has been a tough week. We were in Orlando on vacation when we heard that my Grandma Hazel was very ill and that we should get back as soon as possible. She died two days later, surrounded by her family and friends and as much love as that little room could hold.

I have always been close to my grandma and it’s hard to imagine life without her in it. I miss her already. For years she carried this old photo of the two of us in her purse. I’ll carry it now, Grandma.

I am very sorry to hear about your grandmother. What a difficult time it is for you and your family. The wonderful thing, though, is that you were able to have a special relationship with her in your lifetime. And, I think, even though she isn’t “with us” anymore, you can still continue that relationship…just in a different way.
What a beautiful photo. Carrying it with you will be a perfect way to continue to honor and love her.

Very sorry that your Grandma passed away this week. How wonderful to be surrounded by loved ones when you die!

Grandmothers are SO special! Take one of her mixing bowls, or an apron, and use them. Think about her every time you cook. Take her old broom, dust cloths, laundry clothes pins and use them. Feel her spirit every time you clean. Great memories while doing mundane chores. { Hugs } to you.

27 Tete July 23, 2010 at 10:54 am

Look not for me in shattered dreams, or in an empty shell,
Nor in a place with name carved, for I’m not there as well.
Look inside and you will see we never really part,
I’m free to go where ever I want…I dwell within your heart.

They never really leave- she will always be watching out for you. You will know when she is there…my last grandmother passed 16 years ago. The first steps are the hardest “alone” but it will lessen. The greater the love, the deeper the loss.
Prayers to you and your family- Tete

I, too, miss my beloved grandmother–Baba—I keep her last photo on my fridge—in a straw hat and big pearl earrings at 91. I was so close to her, it’s been 5 yrs and I still remember the last time I nuzzled in her arms–a few weeks before we lost her. She held me as one holds a child –I can still feel her sweet arms around me.

May God comfort you with your beautiful memories,
Carol

55 Nita July 23, 2010 at 1:40 pm

So sorry to hear that, Julia. It is a wonderful experience you had being close to your grandma. I never had that experience and lots of people don’t. I have a friend who was a wonderful mom, and yet one of her daughters is keeping her from her two granddaughters. My friend took care of them for 4 years while her daughter worked, then the daughter came to resent the closeness she had with the girls and now keeps her from them as much as she possibly can. It really is hurting the girls and my friend terribly. So, you were blessed with having that experience, and I hope soon my friend and her grandkids do too.

Julia, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Grandma, it’s never an easy thing to lose anyone we love dearly. Today was the first day I found your blog but I just had to reach out and offer my condolences.

Julia, I’m so sorry. Wish I could wave a magic wand and make you feel better. I’ll be thinking about you and will keep you and your family in my prayers, starting this evening. So glad you have that sweet photo of the two of you.
Hugs,
Susan

I lost my Grandmother 20 years ago. I saw her twice a week, and she taught me so much. Right before she died I had mailed her a newspaper article about myself in which I had credited her with some of my success. Later my Grandpa gave me the letter and I have it still. Cherish your wonderful memories they will see you through.
