Caption This: Did the Furniture Just Move?

by hookedonhouses on July 13, 2010

moving furnitureIs it me, or does it look like the furniture was moving around until someone stepped into the room?

That bookshelf looks like it was trying to make a break for it, and one of the chairs seems to be approaching the other. One of the pictures is climbing up the wall while others appear to be sliding toward the floor. And I wonder where that chest was going before it froze in the middle of the room?

Maybe the furniture has a life of its own when the owners are gone, like Andy’s toys in Toy Story. Or–geekier, creepier reference–like the living statues in the Sally Sparrow episode of “Dr. Who” that change positions when you blink (so you’d better keep your eyes open!).

Or maybe not. Could just be a sign that I shouldn’t be looking at real estate listings after midnight…

How would you caption this photo? Check the listing to see an unusual mural. (Thanks to Jim for the link!)

LOL That is a weird position for furniture! It does look like they were making a break for it! It’s like Beauty and the Beast for real estate listings. :)

Strange and your description is hilarious.

Shame on the listing agent. All that this “staging” says to me is “this room is useless and has no identity or purpose”.

I especially love the little carpet under the bench by the window, and the even little one under one leg of the piano (or is that one a poorly-placed heating vent). ?????

Maybe the caption should be “When no one was looking, Chesty and Benchy took turns riding around on the magic carpets”

“Although she had been a large woman, Esther’s grandchildren eventually found an honored place for her ashes in the center of the family home. They even honored her old pet peeve of not letting anything scratch up her wood floor.”

How about ‘CHANGING PLACES”. I really can’t believe what realtors put out there. We have been looking for a house for almost a year, and some of the photos are horrible. Or they are TERRIFIC, and when you go to see the house it was all smoke and mirrors. We are happy to say we bought a house a month ago, and it looks GREAT!

The furniture on the rugs looks really odd. I would want to know if the rugs take flight if not held down by even one leg of the desk. I think it would be best to lift up a rug to see if there is damage on the floor or a secret passage to the underworld.

Ha Ha! They totally do!

Trish @TheOldPostRoad July 13, 2010 at 9:56 am

This is a game of “freeze tag” – the goal is to get on your own carpet square – every piece was busy moving when the bossy one (center ottoman) yelled “FREEZE!” Then the picture was snapped.

It’s a little creepy. I”m not sure what my caption would be—but I bet that the Realtor removed furniture to make the room feel larger and didn’t re-arrange what was left or maybe they did. The furniture is so distracting it’s hard to focus on the room. I say they needed a stager.

What a weird room. How do people chat in here? I’m sure it’s really awkward.

too funny and your comment are equally hilarious!
It reminds me of someone who inherited grandma’s furniture they didn’t really want and didn’t know what to do with, but their guilt wouldn’t let them get rid of it!
I know…I’ve been there, but didn’t do that!
It sure doesn’t have any rhyme or reason to it does it?!

My husband must have visited that house….he put my porch rockers back up on the front porch after I painted them…he called me out to see if I was happy where he put them…instead of having them turned in towards each other….so you could actually sit and talk to one another…he turned them both in the same direction so the back of one was facing the other…..Only a man….

Did you look at all the photos of that listing? What is up with all the plates and glasses stacked on the kitchen counters? And that other sitting room with the giant cat right in the middle of the room? Weird.

Allyson July 13, 2010 at 6:43 pm

Oh this post made me laugh so much, thank you, needed that for a wacky wednesday morning!! I think the furniture would prefer we stop looking at them so they can get back to their noctural ways!!!!xx

This room made me think of what the house might look like after a mild earthquake and the furniture all “danced” around the room. And as I was clicking through I thought kinda cute place, could be fixed up and then…

OMG the MURAL room…you weren’t kidding. It made me dizzy. Ok, pictures of giant “stylish” people on the walls of what looks to be a former exterior part of the house, but why the large circles with paintings of giant fabric bolts all over the room around them? Do the owners dream of being on Project Runway?

And the kitchen, like someone mentioned with the dishes all over but the layout of the appliances…make me go humm.

Too funny! Thanks!

Surly Girly July 14, 2010 at 7:47 am

Too funny! The stash of toilet paper rolls behind the “throne” caught my eye. What does this tell us? They live by the motto “Be Prepared” … or that there’s no linen closet, apparently. Then there’s the breakfast nook, with two more pictures resting against an already-loaded wall…just waiting to be artfully hung, I guess. The comforter in the master bedroom looks like it’s covered in plastic – don’t even want to go down that path!

Thanks for the laugh.

Janet July 14, 2010 at 11:43 am

LOL all I can say is wow. Staging wasn’t a big thing for these homeowners.
What’s with the floating in the middle of the room cat statue also?
Can’t even begin to try to fathom the mural. Is that in the garage?
Great find it made my day.
