Areader named Stephanie sent me this listing from Georgia. She says she stared at it for awhile, trying to figure out why it didn’t look quite right, and then realized the problem: No front door! Where is it? According to the listing, it has an attached garage, so maybe they just go in and out that way?
Have you seen a house without a front door before?
Visit my Bad MLS Photos page for more head-scratchers like this one!

Weird. Maybe the house has its back to the street. Perhaps it was built prior to the rest of the neighborhood? Either way, it is a head scratcher. lol

I don’t know if this is sad or stupid!
Well that’s one way of keeping the dirty shoes out.
The windows alone make it look a little strange!?
I agree with Lisa that we’re probably looking at the rear of the house. Maybe they wanted the entrance to be a little more private? Very odd, and they get an “F” for curb appeal.
I was going to link to the listing so you could see the other photos, but they removed it yesterday. There were no other exterior photos that showed a door, and none of the interior photos of the living room, etc, had a main door. If the front really is in the back, you’d think they would’ve shown that. Odd! -Julia
Hmmm….this is a first for me!

Actually, yes. In the town I grew up in, Canton, Ohio, there is a house without a front door. It is rather “famous” for that. It has a HUGE bay window instead, which looks out onto a grazing meadow for horses.
I was once invited to the house as a teen. I remember it vividly. My mother made a really big deal about making sure I noticed what the back door looked like, and if it opened into a foyer at the rear. It didn’t. Just a small breezeway into the kitchen.

That is just plain bad. Good luck selling that especially around here where there is such an abundance of houses on the market in a sorry economy.

It jumped right out at me! Who builds a house with no front door? Even if you don’t use it as your main door, there’s no where to run a sidewalk to. It would cut down on people coming to your front door selling things.

Looks very weird! it took me a minute to figure out why though!

They had no forethought whatsover for resale value, you know? I mean, they may not want a front door, but I’m pretty sure the vast majority of people entering homes would love a door in the front.

(just kidding)

Julia, I guess the door is on a different side of the house, and it is possible? that the house was built before the street? so that the front door faces a different way? …why they would post a picture like this though is beyond me!

I was going to suggest that maybe it was a backyard view, but the sign on the lawn nixes that idea. How bizarre! How do they have company over?
Yes, Sarah’s House, the split level edition. It was a complaint of the realtors. But still, it looked fabulous so could get away with it. This house, not so much.

Thats one way to confuse the paperboy, Avon lady and the Jehovahs Witnesses.
Just a thought; Some people actually welcome Jehovah’s witnesses… and lack of a front door has never been an obstacle.
It certainly would deter visitors and bill collectors! LOL!!

It jumped out at me right away, but then I realized there was no visible driveway or anything either. I assumed we might be looking at the side of the house on a corner lot perhaps? Weird.
Haha. We call this design fail. Obviously a single man designed this one.

Funny. Not even a path or walkway leading around to wherever the door is?
I lived in a neighborhood once where all of the normal little tract houses and lawns faced the street as you would expect except for one. Its backyard faced the street and the house faced the house behind it. It was the same era house too so it seemed it was built that way on purpose. Never did know why.

No, I haven’t. I would miss a real front entry to my home–even if I had a side or garage entrance–besides I wouldn’t want to bring guests thru my mudroom. On the other hand it might confuse the door to door solicitors.

Actually I’ve seen a lot of houses here in New England that don’t seem to face the right way. As in their address puts them on the street where they are but the door is to the side or in the back. I”m not sure why, I sort of assumed since the houses are so old the streets were probably added after the houses and they weren’t about to reposition the house to match. But I’m not sure what the reasoning would be with this house, it seems to just be on a big lot, why couldn’t they have put a door on the poor thing?

That’s all I can say about this…
that is too funny! there is a house i used to see on my old work commute… the front door is on the second story. and no, there is not a staircase. I haven’t figured out yet how they come and go…

back in the seventies I had a crush on a house plan that put the front door where it would not be seen. It was in the shape of an H, the right side being the garage and the left being the house with a covering( the cross piece) for the main entryway. the living room windows faced the street, but looked prettier than that house.
actually, i grew up in a house without a front door! no front door at all, just two side doors without a path or anything leading up to them. that is, until my parents remodeled it and now it has a glorious front door.
.-= robin´s last blog ..i have a few exciting things coming up . . . =-.
they are actually pretty common in chicago and the suburbs. they usually have a door on the side. my sister-in-law’s house has a side entry and you would never be able to see it if the photo was taken from the right view. but this house even looks more awkward because of the poor curb appeal.

This one is absolutely perplexing. I’m all for originality, but I like it when it makes some sense. It actually looks like a long garage to me. Like they drive in from the side and then access the house through the garage? As for guests, the lack of an easy way in is a sure fire way to let them know they’re not entirely welcome. Though for solicitors, that might not be a bad thing. Currently, we have a big mailers in a plastic bag hanging from the center knob I obsessed over. Not so charming….

Maybe they used to have a front door where the large bay window is now and just decided they would rather have a window? If that bay window goes all the way to the floor perhaps the new owners could replace it with a front door with two small windows on either side… a simple front stoop and you would have a nice entry for that little house!

That is one weird house, that won’t get any buyers. If there’s no doors then how do you get in, by climbing through a window? They need to either update it a bit or tare it down.
Still have the address? Bing maps birdseye view under Aerial might help. My guess would be L shaped and the front door is in the crook. The neighborhood has no sidewalk so guest were expected to arrive by car; a front door by the garage makes sense.
Don’t show this on LACurbed the hipsters would go apoplectic.
BTW it’s 35 minutes into Glee, does it get better?
It looks like there might be an entrance on the left side of the house. I think I can make out what appears to be a small roof or awning, which might lead to side entrance. If it’s on a corner lot, they may have the entrance facing the other street, but because decided to post this picture because it appears to be the front of the home.

I agree with the comments above. It looks like a garage. Maybe they do just have a big garage type door on the side. It worked on 9 by design (my new favorite show.) This doesn’t look lie a 9 by design house though.
ugh. this is a ‘trend’ I’ve been seeing around Maine for a little bit. People closing up their front doors or removing the door & putting a window in. WHY?!?! Just because you use the garage entrance I still don’t think a house looks ‘right’ without a front door! We hardly ever use our front door but that’s because our cement stairs that are built into the hill our house sits on are crumbling. Our house sits right on the street so our stairs open out onto the sidewalk which would be lovely when we have people over and they park on the street but I don’t want anyone walking up those crumbly stairs until they are fixed! But I would never, ever NOT have a front door!

I don’t care what you think……. I like it. Alot!!! anyway
As a Realtor, every now and then we’ll run into a house without a clearly visible front door. There must have been some awful trend at one point to only have a door off of the carport or on the side of the house. Yikes! It’s beyond me.

It’s not just missing a front door; look at the shutters! Or what there are are them. They remind me of those super thin wings on huge jets.
