Decorating with Doll Heads: Quirky or Creepy?

by hookedonhouses on April 20, 2010

china doll heads-Country Living

When I first came across this photo in Country Living, I did a double-take. And then rubbed my eyes until they squeaked like a cartoon character’s. I liked the rest of the rooms that went with it, but I didn’t expect to see bodiless doll heads in the china cabinet.

The homeowner was going for whimsy, and I can see that–she’s an antiques dealer and her home is filled with some fabulous vintage finds–but I don’t think I could handle all those glassy little eyes staring out at me. (You can see more rooms from this home here.)

What do you think? Are the doll heads quirky and fun–or a little too creepy?

not just creepy to me, but super, super creepy! Like if I were invited over for lunch, I would have to decide which would be worse-sitting across from that cabinet and seeing the doll heads or having it behind me and knowing the severed heads were looking at me!

VERY creepy. I’m shuddering just looking at the picture.

That is one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen in home decor. I can not imagine the reaction she gets from unsuspecting visitors.

pattie and allie April 20, 2010 at 7:12 am

Ummm…no thank you. But I WILL take the white ironstone-gorgeous!
And I can honestly say as a designer I’ve never been asked to incorporate doll heads into a room’s decor.

I’ve seen the doll appendages (heads, arms, torsos) in lots of junking/antiquing magazines & blogs over the past year or so. Here’s my take: if there is a small grouping of them to show off a fun collection, I guess that’s one thing — not my personal style, but not too creepy. BUT if there is just one lone doll head staring out at you….I think “Bride of Chucky”.
Blessings,

Aaaaauuuggghhhh!!! CREEPY!! I usually like just about everything CL does, but this is just weird.

We looked at a house that was decorated with dolls the owner apparently made herself. They were sort of part-human, part-bird. Very strange. Lots of feathers and beaks. I think one had talons instead of hands. Other than that, it was an incredibly charming house, and it was snapped up in a hurry.

Becky K April 20, 2010 at 7:54 am

I am definitely not loving the doll heads. Makes me think of Richard Simmon’s bio where he tells of taking Barbie heads off in toy stores and collecting them in his top dresser drawer. Ewww!

The cabinet is cute, though!

That is so utterly disturbing. I remember once my friend was raving about how she had painted her furniture and couldn’t wait to show me…So I went over to her house and walked in her room and she had a wall of Mardi Gras-ish ceramic masks…know what I mean? I stopped dead in my tracks in her doorway and wouldn’t go in. Those lifeless eyes freak me out. I had to walk in with my eyes closed, then sit on her bed so I couldn’t see the masks. She did a great job on her furniture though! I felt bad because she really loved her masks, but they freaked me out big time!

Super creepy. Dolls in general bother me… disembodied heads, even more so. In her guest bedroom, my mom keeps a glass compote on the bedside table filled with those little pink naked babies a bakery would use on baby shower cakes. They’re from the 50′s or 60′s and there are probably thirty of them. Weird, but cute – not creepy like dolls.

Everything about the home was a dream – except they had dolls everywhere! Spooky! As you entered the living room, a 4′ tall doll holding out a tray of candy. Creepy for sure!

the domestic fringe April 21, 2010 at 7:10 am

I’ve seen this done and featured on some blogs, but I do think it’s kind of creepy. Kind of like having a vase of headless roses on your fireplace. But hey, I do some things other people hate, so if I guess if you like it….

“I hear them screaming to be taken to the DOLL HOSPITAL”…
Definitely creepy and they need to go… I’m sure everyone that has visited her home has told her that…

CREEPY and DOUBLE CREEPY! Especially if you have an active imagination–it reminds me of those scary movies where the dolls start talking and have lots of evil intentions–eeeeek :O!

Creepy — bordering on the seriously sinister!

Does this person have a few weird issues ….. “Darling let’s have decapitated baby doll heads staring out of the china cabinet! So chic! So fab!”

Reminds me of those shrunken heads from “Harry Potter: Prisoner of Azkaban”

Might work for a Halloween party — with black china of course!

LOL!

Creepy. I think doll heads and clowns, for that matter, are very creepy.

ginnycartersmallenburg April 21, 2010 at 9:03 pm

Gosh, I guess I am he only one who likes it. I don’t think it is creepy. It reminds me of being a kid again.

Creepy. Definitely creepy!

Karen April 22, 2010 at 4:06 pm

Creepy with a capital C. I think the trend of decorating with doe-eyed babies, animals (deer especially), ephemera, etc. is all a little too much for me to handle.

Creepy – I bet this woman doesn’t cook much! If it’s whimsy she is going for – then maybe these dolls should have names like: Clarice Starling and Hannah half- daughter of Dr. Lecter ?

you can take one look at the aesthetics and the nature of this blog and figure out that all the replies to your question will be on the “creepy” side. Gentrified country-fried whiteness tends to smooth out all the sharp edges and quirky mismatches of anything remotely interesting. Not a complaint, just an observation. I leave room for both in my lifestyle of choice.

hillarious , just love it for the shock factor, judging by the comments I must be creepy too or is it just my Aussie sense of humour

Definitely a bit disturbing. I’d be a little worried if I saw that in someones house.

…I just found this as a refferal to your blog post today. Yes, I love this woman’s blog and her home is beautiful, but the dolls heads are just something that nightmares are made of. Personally, I couldn’t have them in my home.
I recently did a post about the Madison-Bouckville Antique show in Bouckville, NY and there was a booth that specialized in collage art made with dolls parts and old tin cans. It was very creepy…

I have never been disappointed in Country Living…until now. Dolls give me the creeps…much less than doll heads.

I like it.

I kept scrolling down to find someone who liked the doll heads. Only one person did. So I’ll make that two. I LOVE the heads. I also have a couple of doll heads displayed on bookcases. I don’t like dolls – just their heads. I have antique iron doll heads on my fireplace which were used as molds to make doll heads. I get alot of laughs however no one is creeped out. Although, anything en mass can get scarry. I’m surprised no one commented on how much ‘stuff’ is in that mobile home. Even a good wind couldn’t blow all that away.

Rachel October 10, 2010 at 12:05 pm

Not only do I love this display, I love doll parts. I even make art out of them. I detest dolls in their original form, but I love taking their parts and making something new out of them.

That’s interesting–I’ve heard that from several people now. Some people really love doll heads! -Julia

Paul November 1, 2010 at 4:23 pm

I agree with y’all – the heads are creepy. The decorator should have used the doll limbs instead. I like to decorate our Christmas tree with hundreds of doll arms and doll legs. I arrange the arms or legs into star patterns and hot glue them together.

In this case I would’ve arranging several doll arms into the tea cups so that dozens of tiny hands would appear to be waving or clutching upwards at something. Now THAT’S decorating. I leave out the heads though. The heads would just be weird.

Love it! :-)
