Great links, Julia! I’m planning a drive up the coast in May that will include a day in Carmel so I can finally see those Hansel and Gretel houses in person. Off to Melissa’s anthro post now… not sure how I missed that!

Great links. Loved Rachell Ashwell’s shabby cottage. I’d take it in a heartbeat. Have to throw some colorful rugs, pillows and curtains around though. I’d just wither with all that white:)

I used to live in Monteray, CA and went to Carmel often. The town is absolutely adorable. The shops and restaurants make you want to stay forever. It was so full of tourists though, I don’t think I’d want to live there. ;)
That Green Home was fascinating. I wanted to see more! How cool was that? A bit ultra modern for my tastes, and I’m sure we’d just throw our junk behind all those cool sliding walls, but still what a fantastic idea.

Loved the anthropologie post, thanks for a great link roundup! I have to say I don’t think I could live in an old mental hospital (or the jail they are renovating as condos in my town currently). My rational mind says “no problem” but the little hairs on the back of my neck say different. There is just something about it that gives me the creeps.

Loved the links…Carmel is so dreamy!
Location, location, location..it must be the reason for the price tag on Rachel Ashwells cottage because I don’t see any thing else that merits the asking price. I also wonder if the sq. footage might be a mistake. It seems the 1783 sq. ft. would seem a little small to house 4 beds and 4 baths. Just curious….my middle name when it comes to houses!

Love the links. I saw the Rachel Ashwell house for $2 million. It’s smaller than my 3 bedroom, 2 bath and has 4 and 4, so how small are they? That is an old house, wonder where she is going now. Anyway, how hard is it to decorate all white? There is not even a curtain on those windows.

Loved the Carmel and other links. You have the best blog, I just love it.

Hi Julia
Guess I’m hooked on houses.
I spend large parts of my holidays looking at and admiring houses and homes.
Stately homes on the grand scale or small thatched cottages.

For beautiful houses I love to visit the Cotswalds or Dorset but there is great vernacular architecture everywhere.
I’ve spent hours looking at the local houses when I’ve taken holidays in France and imagined living in some of the properties.

I had no time to do a weekly roundup this week as I was somewhat MIA in blogland for the past few days. Glad I made time this morning to read yours. Worked through most of the links and my fave is the manifesto. Exploring more now…

Thanks, Julia! Marija

Just in case anybody would be interested, there is book, “Cottages by the Sea”, which feature these cottages: http://www.amazon.com/Cottages-Handmade-Carmel-Americas-Community/dp/0789304953/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1268594351&sr=1-1 (Amazon) and also:

“Sea Captains’ Houses and Rose-Covered Cottages: The Architectural Heritage of Nantucket Island” (also Amazon).

Both books were available at my library:)

19 DesignTies March 14, 2010 at 8:37 pm

I haven’t seen any of them yet, but I’ll be checking them out :-)

Don’t know if I’d want to live in an abandoned mental hospital. There was an episode of House Hunters where one of the houses a couple looked at used to be a funeral parlour. I can’t remember if they chose that one or not.

Thanks for these, Julia. I love how a person’s link-love collections give us an insight into what they enjoy and how their creative brain operates! I’d seen a few of these already, and this is an incentive to get some housework and writing tasks done so I can have a wee link surf during my next coffee break.

Thanks Julia–Great links!
>Love the coastal homes.
>>The mental hospital re-dos are interesting, but I don’t know if I could live in one. Maybe if the former energy was cleared out. I’m already crazy enough. :-)
>>>Awesome Hong Kong efficiency apartment. Amazing what he did with only 300 square feet!

Where have you been?? I just fell onto your site and I’m hooked – line and sinker!
Who wouldn’t love to tour houses in the comfort of ones home. Your photos are beautifully done. It’s fun to see how the designers have decorated them and what is ‘in’ today. I wanted ideas on Nantucket style and I found a few. Thanks ever so much for your dedication to this project. Keep up the great job and I will be forever hooked!!
