Pascale’s Colorful Farmhouse Kitchen in Portland

by hookedonhouses on February 23, 2010

Pascale in her Portland kitchen

One of the best things about having this blog is that readers frequently send me photos of their homes. I’m such a snoop so interested in seeing how other people live that it’s always a treat to see the houses behind the lovely people who write the comments and e-mails. I was especially happy when a reader named Pascale sent me pictures of her colorful farmhouse kitchen in Portland, Oregon.

Pascale's Kitchen 2

Pascale was inspired to recreate the feeling of her grandparents’ farmhouse kitchen in Belgium, where she grew up eating Sunday meals with her family. She says she wanted it to feel happy, and “I need color to feel happy.”

Pascale's kitchen 1

There’s plenty of color to cheer anyone up here, from the apple green walls and multicolored tile to the red throw rugs and beautiful blue AGA stove.

Many thanks to Pascale for sharing her kitchen with us. You can see additional photos and read more about it in the The Oregonian (photo at top via their article, by Motoya Nakamura; other photos courtesy the homeowner). Pascale also has a blog, which features her cartoons, at Maxine’s BD.

Oh, my word. . . an Aga? Wouldn’t that be a dream come true??

I should clean my kitchen so that I can send you photos of it. Yes, that would be good motivation.

As I sit here at the counter and look at it, I realize that I’ll need some motivation to get it done. :)

I have always wanted to do a multicolored backsplash in our kitchen. I love that look and think it is timeless! Beautiful color!

The European charm is evident..Love this kitchen..so personal..and Lived..I mean LOVED.

Sterile kitchens with nothing in sight makes me wonder if people use them:)

I am so happy to see a colorful kitchen. And so tired of seeing all the “neutral” kitchens everywhere I go. BORING. Thanks!!

I love it! Reminds me of my favorite aunt’s kitchen. I love that it’s full of life and clearly loved.

This has to be the most colourful kitchen I’ve ever seen!! Love the bright green on the walls — it’s so happy and cheerful :-)

Love that huge window above the sink too :-)

I love that this is a REAL kitchen. I see so many staged kitchens that can’t possibly be conducive to cooking (or at least not the mess we make when putting together a meal!). Who wouldn’t be happy hanging out with all these cheerful colors! Marija

I’m surprised at how much I like this kitchen. I am a prisoner of neutrals but I was really drawn to the feeling that is captured by all the color. I think it works because there is a lot of wood to ground the room and keep it from becoming frivilous. Nice job.

I LOVE AGAs. I had a friends home listed and sold that had an awesome kitchen with a huge dark green AGA.
I love your readers use of colors in the kitchen, very happy feeling.

How refreshing to see all of the color. Great personality. One has to be confident and brave to create this look. I bet if she ran the idea over book club they would tell her to tone it down-good thing she didn’t. Gotta go for it!

It’s very nice. I’m not a huge fan of bright colours, so it wouldn’t work for me, but beautiful. I love the stove though. Love love love it!

What a fun Kitchen! :) It makes me smile.

24 The Tiny Homestead February 23, 2010 at 12:42 pm

I love this kitchen. The wood cabinets and trim are exactly what wood should be- rich, vibrant and interesting. No wonder painted cabinets are all the rage when most wood kitchens look so blah.

31 Pascale February 23, 2010 at 4:05 pm

Woaw! We very recently sold the house, so this great kitchen is now officially Jenifer’s kitchen… We are in the process of closing a purchase on a cute little farmhouse a few miles outside Portland. We enjoyed the kitchen at the old house, have great memories of it, and look forward to take on our next project.

Hi Julia – now that is a kitchen with charm and soul and you can actually cook and spill food without panic. LOVE IT. Great blog as usual thanks Julia. Regards Esther (still trying…..to be a domestic diva) from cloudy Sydney…

What a refreshing post. We are fortunate enough to have a getaway place in Galena, Illinois and it is so different from our everyday home. I am used to white woodwork but in Galena everything is stained and there is a lot of woodwork. I loved seeing bright colors with a stained trim. It does work…. at least for her. I am amazed. I am rethinking all of my plans. Thanks for sharing.
