My Birthday Came Early This Year

Bombay Chest-Arhaus

Remember when I took a poll a couple of weeks ago and asked you if you thought turquoise has gotten too trendy? Well, I kind of had a personal reason for wondering what you thought. I had gone shopping with my mom–ostensibly to help her find a couple of chairs for her living room–when I spotted this Bombay Chest at Arhaus. I couldn’t take my eyes off it. I even snapped that picture of it before leaving the store.

My mother thought I should get it for my dining room.  When I said I didn’t think I could spend that much right now, she  said, “Well, your birthday is coming up. Let me buy it for you!” My birthday isn’t until the end of April. By that logic, everyone has a birthday coming up. Ha. I protested, but she insisted, earning herself the title of The Most Generous Mother in the World.

It recently came home to live in my dining room, and I love it! I have to admit I did a little “happy dance” when no one was looking.

behind table and chairs

I haven’t figured out how I want to decorate the chest yet, but I’ve been playing around with a few things like this white elephant that I’ve had for years–it goes all the way back to my dorm-room days.

white elephant

I got this mirror in an antique store years ago and it’s been sitting in my basement, waiting for something to do. I dusted it off and hung it over the chest. I think it works!

Bombay Chest-antique mirror

I have already rearranged the top of the chest five times since I took these photos yesterday. It’s so much fun to have something new in the house to play with! Thanks, Mom. You’re off the hook for the next five birthdays, at least.

P.S. Are you going to Nashville for the BlissDom blogging conference? I’m all packed up and on my way. Hope to see you there!

The chest is gorgeous and you’ve accessorized it beautifully! I’m totally envious! I must thank you for the House of Turquoise website you recently featured. I love the color and use it often in my decorating. I consider it a “neutral” color that goes with almost anything. It’s in every room of my house.

Melanie February 4, 2010 at 8:02 am

I think the mirror and the plates look fantastic over the chest. The mirror pulls in the color of the hardware on the chest and the chandelier. The white plates pull in the color of the chairs. It looks beautiful!

Absolutely love it. The white plates really set it off. Also noticed you have a black tole tray on your table. I have quite a few of those and never know exactly what to do with them. Glad to see they must still be “in.”

First of all, I think it’s terrific that you’ve just posted this and already have 25 comments! That’s high traffic, for sure. Second, yes — the piece, as Sheri stated, looks much more fab in your house than in the store. I love the plate-and-pitcher idea — very Nantuckety. And I’m also completely thrilled to have found your site — love love love it! BTW, my mom’s M.O. is the same as your mom’s. She just bought me a gorgeous, huge copper lamp with pounded copper shade. It’s seriously cool, sort of nautical-inspired. Moms are fantastic!

I LOVE THE CHEST. It is so me…(wish I had it). Your Mom sounds just like my Mom…always looking for a reason to buy me the treasure that I will not buy for myself. I must say that my Dad is the same way. He recently built a kitchen table for me that will seat 10 and I think of him every time I sit down to it (which is a million times a day). Have a great day and enjoy the chest and the obvious love that went with it from your Mom.

I’d like to share one more “Treasure” in the Shenandoah Valley. For all your viewers that love exquisite homes with an abundance of ornate detail, this is one of the most beautiful in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. I have known this home personally over 20 years and have been in it more than I could ever count and to this day the craftsmanship in the home takes my breath away. Not to mention it is on 3.3 park-like acres in the town of Mt. Jackson, private and meandors gracefully through extensive landscaping to approx. 160 feet of the Shenandoah river frontage.

MAH February 4, 2010 at 1:43 pm

Beautiful!!!!!!! (what about turquoise shades on the chandelier?) I think that turquoise is here to stay, simple because so many of the old pieces that you find are turquoise or variations of that color! I have a number of pieces that are OLD that have turquoise as the color you can see or the color under layers of paint! I love it! We discovered that one of our bedrooms was originally painted a beautiful turquoise and our house was built in 1927.

It seems like that piece was meant for the room and has gone through a lot of adventures before it finally made it “home”. Looks amazing absolutely love it! Its so much fun when you just happen upon these things that just “fit” your home! Same thing happened to me and my dining room hutch that was redone with glass shelves, lighting, a distressed painted finish, and chicken wire over the glass in the cabinet doors (sounds weird but believe me, its undescriably beautiful!)

well your mum is a star – and you have such beautiful taste, look at those floors!!! you star!!! lovely drawer set too, just a lovely looking style in your home, the colour is sensational – and it is a feature item, even if it is a bit shabby, that’s the whole point I thought! (my mum died when I was a young girl, I guess it’s times like this i get a liddle jealous! but I am happy for you, I hope to do things like this for my girl for many years to come!)

I’m having a hard time with this turquoise thing. I’ve never been a blue person, yet I painted my studio and laundry room a version of this color. I convinced myself to take this plunge by renaming it Tiffany Blue :) Anyway, I work with painted furniture and I usually do kind of wild and crazy things but they do mesh with a traditional home.

I’m not trying to self promote but to understand what I’m saying you almost need a picture. So when I saw your post showing the turquoise furniture I thought maybe it would be fun to incorporate this look – a calmer bluer version into one of my spring pieces. Who knows? Maybe it will sell. :) Thanks for the idea

The chest is so attractive and you have such a flare for arrangements. Table top arrangements, as I call them, are like still lifes, and give me so much pleasure, especially when they incorporate items with special meaning or memories. Thank you for sharing!

Very nice turquoise! I am a big fan if used correctly. This is a very nice use of turquoise, and seems to be working quite well with a lot of the things in your house!

LOVE IT! If turqouise is too trendy, you can always paint it. But, it looks beautiful in the space! My mother inlaw is alot like your mother. She is always looking for an excuse to spoil us. Fun for you and happy birthday!

Lovely…why aren’t you an interior designer, you certainly have a great eye for design!

Heather Collins April 1, 2010 at 7:36 am

gotta love shopping with mom! I always secretly hope for the “your birthday is coming up” comment ; ) The chest is lovely, and personally I think no matter how trendy some things become, they can still be classic….like turquoise. (The domino book is also one of my absolute faves! Don’t you miss the magazine! I’ve saved every one.
