One Room in This Victorian Is Not Like the Others

by hookedonhouses on August 12, 2009

One of my favorite real estate games is called “One of These Rooms Is Not Like the Others.” You know, like the one they play on “Sesame Street,” where they show a group of objects and sing: “One of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn’t belong! Can you tell which thing is not like the others by the time I finish my song?”

When I see a house like this, that song starts playing in my head. You’ll be going along through the rooms and then suddenly, BAM. It looks like the real estate agent stuck a photo in from an entirely different listing. See if you can spot the one that doesn’t seem to belong:

This is a Victorian-style home built in 1900. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, and is on the market for $639,000.

Did you guess which room was not like the others? Did you guess what doesn’t belong? Could you tell which room was not like the others by the time I finished my song?

I know you think I added that bedroom from another listing, but I swear it really is in the same house! If you like playing this game, check out my other One of These Rooms… posts. If you get a kick out of bad MLS photos in general, you can see more under Rooms That Need Rehab.

That bedroom is INSANE!!!!! I was totally sure it was the room that doesn’t belong. Although the wallpaper along the staircase is pretty insane too!!

Wow. I think that bedroom has burned my retinas. It’s just so……. bad!!!

Thanks for the laugh and for participating in Rewind Wednesday :-) I’m happy you took this opportunity to bring this post back :-)

Ummmmm… what just happened?!

It looks like 70′s kitsch, Asian contemporary, feng shui and the leftovers from dear old Aunt Myrtle’s estate sale all got shoved into a room together, blindfolded, and put on a Tilt-a-Whirl until they threw up everywhere.

Nice one, Julia!

5 Derek August 12, 2009 at 8:29 am

did they rent a room out to the Mod Squad?

Shocking!

Fun stuff. Too many times that song goes through my head, and we haven’t watched Sesame Street in MANY years.

Wow! Who threw that paint job in? Seriously, how did they live with that crazy room? Too funny, Julia! I may have to go check out her site now. I haven’t been visiting anyone much this summer. I’m on a mission to finish this online MT course!

Glad I could sneak in a visit today! You’re one of my favs!!!

Do you think they got a picture from another house mixed in? That REALLY doesn’t fit with the rest of the house – not even the bones of the room look the same. Wow!

Too funny! Looking at the exterior shot, I can’t even imagine where that bedroom would be located.

“But honey, you can decorate the rest of the house YOUR way if you just let me decorate the bedroom!”

14 Jenny @ Words On Wendhurst August 12, 2009 at 10:22 am

I’m just wondering, why oh why, after putting so much hideous wallpaper in that room, would they think that MIRRORS to reflect that paper was a good idea?

15 MaryBeth August 12, 2009 at 10:29 am

You can’t be serious. I can’t imagine how that room even came in to being. Unless the whole house looked that way when they bought it and they redid all the rest. But then who would put a room like that into a victorian house? MB

16 Victoria @ DesignTies August 12, 2009 at 10:34 am

Too weird & hilarious, Julia!
The only reason I believe that that crazy room is in that lovely (although decorated as though granny inspired them) Victorian house is because YOU said it was… if you insist!! HaHa! And how terrific that you were able to re-publish this fun post… thank you so much for participating in Rewind Wednesday!

TOO FUNNY! I love your sense of humor. I thought I didn’t ‘care for’ the floral victorian look, UNTIL I saw the 1970′s disaster – My eyes were begging for another victorian room!

18 Struggler August 12, 2009 at 10:39 am

Hi Julie, sorry I didn’t see it the first time, but am a follower now, that room is so out of charactor, love the old style homes but would have to get rid of the walpaper in the hall & stairway to much for me, great house though ;)

Wow. That’s quite the room. And I don’t think I like it. Definitely wouldn’t choose it for myself.

41 Bella October 18, 2009 at 10:21 am

LOL. That’s just SO wrong!

It reminds me of one of the hideous rooms that was in our house when we bought it. 70′s foil wallpapers with a Pizza Hut looking light fixture. While inappropriate for the house, at least that room might be attractive in another style of house. The one in ours wouldn’t have been attractive ANYWHERE. EEK!

42 Susan March 11, 2010 at 1:22 am

Is it just me? The wallpaper is a bit much, but it’s interesting and somewhat put together, not so nauseating and random compared to the rest of the house. Just because you loved Great Granny doesn’t mean you have to keep her furniture and decor.

43 Anna March 11, 2010 at 10:35 am

Experiment with home decor can be hazardous to your health, please hang wallpaper responsibly. This place looks like it’s owners picked up a deco mag and went crazy. 70′s chic in the bedroom ( or a bad trip) and time-worn 1950′s grandma decor….
