Do You Do Your Laundry During Dinner?

by hookedonhouses on May 28, 2009

If you like to multitask–say, throw a load of whites into the washing machine during dinner–then this dining room is for you.

How many “Designed to Sell” rules do you think this room is breaking? I mean, okay, you have nowhere else for your washer and dryer, but can you not take the exercise ball off the top and maybe put the vacuum cleaner away before taking the picture? (Who sent me this photo? Was it you? Got to start writing these things down!)

Now I feel compelled to show you something pretty. Love this little double-rocker from Heirlooms to Be. They’re one of my blog’s sponsors, and I can never get enough of their painted furniture for children. So cute!

Tomorrow is Hooked on Fridays, so get your posts ready to start linking up here at 10 p.m. tonight (ET).

You see this stuff on the international House Hunters shows. The washer may be anywhere like kitchens and baths. Some may wash both dishes and underwear. I don’t know, my kitchen can get a little greasy sometimes, don’t want that stuff on my clothes.

Oh my! That dining room makes me tense just looking at it!

Wow. I’m pretty sure the exercise ball was the first thing I saw. Aside from that, the off center 80′s era chandelier is my favorite aspect of the room. :)

Woooooowwwwwwwwwwww…. Where do I start besides the obvious washer and dryer set? How about the plastic table cloth or the light fixture?? Thank you for showing the pretty bench, because my eyes were burning LOL

Have a great weekend!

I always thought it would be handy to have a washer and dryer in the kitchen since I spend so much time there I could quickly change loads, but I thought about it being tucked in a closet or underneath the counter. Not sitting out in the dining area like that.

I’m with Heather. Looking at this room kinda makes me feel ill.

I am blessed with a laundry room right off the side of my kitchen so…..YES, I do my laundry during dinner!

OH MY GOSH! Julia this is shocking! Convenient yes….but…Who wants to think about laundry more than you have to? This is hilarious!

Hi Julia,
I am following your blog for quite a while now and have found many beautiful and amusing things. I really do not want to even start with above photo because nearly nothing does work together but maybe one should keep in mind that there are a lot of people who just don’t care what they are wearing and they do not care wether their house looks “stylish” in some way. They are just happy to have a roof above their heads. I think one needs to respect that too.
A question for your Friday party: this sounds like fun but I am a bit irritated because – if I understood the rules correctly – there is a theme for that day and all participants should have written a blog post relating to that theme? But what I see on the various blogs is that the theme is not covered at all.
But maybe I have understood something wrong?

Best regards from Munich,
Petra

Hi, Petra! The theme of the Hooked on Fridays parties is always the same: “What are you hooked on this week?” It can be anything that makes you happy. It doesn’t have to be anything specific. Hope that makes sense. You’re welcome to join us! -Julia

Well, whoever is ‘decorating’ seems to have tried. It looks like they tried decorating for Christmas, they must care somewhat about their home.
Maybe someone could suggest an L-shaped shower rod and pretty lace curtain to hide it all.
I’m hoping it’s just stored there temporarily (the plastic isn’t even peeled from the dials yet), that would make me feel much better.

Great blog!

The ball on top is the kicker.

Seriously made me chuckle out loud.

I think Emily@chatting at the sky had a washer and dryer in her kitchen when they bought it.

Is this a real estate photo? The photographer and /or agent should have made some changes…no excuse for it!

14 hookedonhouses May 28, 2009 at 1:04 pm

Yup, they’re trying to sell this house with this photo. The homeowners can live however they want. However, I feel it’s the real estate agent’s job to present it better than this!

Someone was telling me her agent took a photo of her bathroom with her underwear hanging out to dry and posted it on the MLS. She was furious and demanded that he retake the shot. He didn’t. She fired him. (And good for her!) -Julia

Memories…our first home after our wedding was a little two-bedroom duplex with the washer and dryer right next to the stove. You can imagine the range then the washer then the dryer–three big white boxes in a row! It goes without saying that the W&D ended up working great as extra countertop space! While I’m glad we’ve graduated to a better laundry/cooking arrangement, I sure do miss the rent there: $300/month!

WOW. That is awful! I might feel a little better if they angled the table so it was somewhat centered under that horrible light fixture… but probably not. As for the laundry machines, that would drive me INSANE! If I cannot close the door on the noise of the laundry, I wont be using them. There is no way I would have it in my dining room!

Julia you crack me up!
Our brownstone in Chicago had this set up. It was The most amazing apartment…huge original pocket doors, Original marble fireplace HUGE, HUGE ceilings…And a washer/dryer in a closet in the dining room. WEIRD. At least it was in a closet, however I always worried someone would ask “what’s in the closet” & see what a weird set up we had. I guess it was city living & space saving was a priority, but it was so goofy…I must admit folding laundry on the dining room table was easy. Weird, but easy. I’m glad we were just renting. I would never do that for a property we owned.

Oh, I feel bad for them for having to live there!! :(

You are right that it’s an agent’s job to take better pictures! When I handled listings and closings for a broker, I found that she was a pro at taking quality shots of a home. She made sure to take photos from the best angles (not a “car shot”!) and if the some of the rooms in the house were too messy, she wouldn’t take pictures of that room until they were cleaned up!

Love that painted rocker–so sweet! :)

That is a bad, bad photo. There was a house on MLS near me that was so horrible I was literally speechless. I’ve never seen anything like it. I think it had been “staged” but by who, I don’t know…a crazy person maybe? It was obviously uninhabited, with tiny, out of scale pieces positioned strangely and fake plants GALORE! In the LR/DR alone there must have been 20, it was like a jungle! The house is no longer on MLS, though I can’t imagine it sold looking like that. Maybe they’re re-doing it. It was ridiculous.

Yes indeed it is a hideous photo for promotional purposes, but don’t be too hard on these people. It’s clearly a very small scale house (apartment?), and what we’re looking at is a “dining nook” off the kitchen that has room for a small eating table and a stacked washer-dryer. Any house hunter who is currently schlepping to a laundromat will be heartened, not horrified, to see this.

36 Moi June 15, 2009 at 8:44 pm

I agree that this would appeal to people who have to schlep their stuff to a laundromat. This is a step up for them.
