Fresh Home Magazine, Mint Pillows, and a Book Giveaway

by hookedonhouses on April 18, 2009

One advantage to writing a house blog is that people start sending you “house stuff” to check out. This week I got a copy of the new magazine from Reader’s Digest called Fresh Home. Have you seen it yet? Its tagline is “Easy Ideas for Hands-On People,” and it’s filled with project ideas for DIYers. When I saw the cover, I asked my husband why we don’t ever roll around on the floor and get all romantic when we’re painting like this couple is? Honestly. We never have this much fun with paintbrushes in our hands!

I recently got a box in the mail from “Mint Pillows” and couldn’t imagine what could be inside. I was picturing something to eat…like pillowy mints? I wasn’t sure. It turned out to be a designer pillow made with indoor/outdoor fabric. The website explains:

Inspired by exotic locations, we’ve designed our 2008-09 Collections to bring brilliant colors and artful style to your indoor and outdoor living spaces. Our pillows are exclusive, artist-created limited-edition print and silkscreen designs – each of which is meticulously sewn, marked and dated.

This blue pillow is from their Aloha collection. The one they sent me was from the Bali collection and was an odd shade of green-gold that didn’t really “match” the rest of this post. Or, sadly, anything in my house.

Finally, I have to tell you about this wonderful book, Designing Your Dream Home, by Susan Lang. I was so excited when Susan sent me a copy because it’s one of the most comprehensive guides to building and remodeling I’ve ever seen. It has room-by-room questions to ask, mistakes to avoid, and checklists to follow. She’s giving a copy of her book away on her blog, so head over there to enter this weekend before it’s too late!

Congrats to Jane at Beach House for winning the giveaway from HOMEdigz last week, and thanks to all of you who entered. It’s great to see so many of you on the decorating forums, and I’ve been enjoying our discussions there. If you haven’t joined us yet, what are you waiting for?

Hi Julia,

I don’t ever roll around on the floor either when I’m painting, wow I am truly missing out…LOL!! I want to get a copy of that magazine. I am having magazine withdrawal with all the mags biting the dust.

Hugs,
LeAnn:)

LOL. This is how magazines/catalogs set us up for unrealistic expectations. Dh and I never roll around on a floor with paint brushes, we never trek through feet of snow in matching Nordic sweaters to chop down our Christmas tree (a la J. Crew) and we never sit in an outdoor tub full of bubbles drinking champagne (a la Conde Nast). Ever.
BTW, I’m totally jealous of your freebies, but I know you put a ton of work into the blog, so I think you deserve them.

Funny about the rolling on floor while painting. That new magazine looks interesting, I’ll be looking for it. Thanks!

Not one drop of paint on their clothes! The minute I take the lid off the can, I get paint somewhere it doesn’t belong.

Well I totally roll around on the floor with my husband when we’re painting – you’re so missing out – it’s so much fun. ha!

That’s so awesome that you get freebies in the mail now. I love that blue pillow you showed us, but holycow – over $90 for one throw pillow. Not in my budget!

I somehow missed previous discussions of HOMEdigz – I’ll check it out now. Hope you’re having a great weekend!

I saw that magazine at Target yesterday. Was tempted to buy it but didn’t. So a free copy would be great. My husband has never held a paint brush. Much less roll around on the floor with one. LOL

That’s so neat you get free stuff! That couple reminds me of a giant poster I saw at the bank the other day – it was a photo of a woman who was thrilled beyond belief to have a debit card in her hand. What a magical world :) ….

I hope you’re having a great weekend!

* Well, girlfriend, I THINK somebody “read” that pic all wrong!!! (IMHO, THIS is what we “DO” to “CONVINCE/ENTICE” DH into painting, RIGHT????) I love coming here~ Many thanks, Linda *

They don’t look very comfortable or romantic, certainly not enough to entice me to buy the magazine. And I do wonder why 317 ways to improve your home. Why not 310 or 318? I think I might get bored after a dozen.

HI Julia!
Hhhmm romance with a paint brush-I am going to have to talk to my husband about that-maybe it would put the DIY desire into him? LoL!
And the book looks very interesting too. I will have to get myself a copy of that.
We are kindred spirits in that I also hope to have a home by the sea side *sigh* Day dreamin about that often!
I hope you are having a wonderful weekend? It has been gorgeous here in the Pacific Northwest!~Smiles~Tam!

I know you like looking at house listings, and I thought you might want to check out the library in this house:

Hey Misty, I couldn’t agree with you more ! After painting a nursery last month, I soooooo do not want to paint my dining room, or guest room or kids bath…well you get the point!

Ijust got Fresh Home Mag yesterday and I am really impressed. I love the articles on the new lights available and what about all the info on mold. I really love the directions to build things that I hadn’t thought of. I hope it keeps up the good work and doesn’t just impress us one time. By the way, I found you while looking to see if the magazine had a web page and I really enjoyed your site. I am going to go and explore it further, Thanks for the excitement in my day….
