10 Scary Ways to Decorate Your Home (If You Dare)

by hookedonhouses on October 31, 2008

Want to know how to really scare your neighbors this Halloween? Here are some surefire ways to frighten any trick-or-treaters who come by tonight (if you dare)!

Scary Decorating Tip #1: Allow the fake garland to take over your kitchen. “We haven’t seen Alice since she went to the kitchen to make a sandwich.”

I think I just saw it move. Did you?

#2: Don’t stop with the fake stuff. Let real ivy take over the front of your house. “Attack of the Living Vines!”

And–

#3: Add not one, but two satellite dishes to the front of your house to let your neighbors know you are SERIOUS about your TV reception.

#4: Hang dead animal heads on the wall that are bigger than the furniture in the room.

#5: Carve a couple of paunchy gargoyles into your fireplace. Tell your guests that they come alive at night and hunt for food in your fridge. I bet they’ll believe you. (via Stonecarver.com)

#6: Paint your beamed ceilings pink. And your built-in bookshelves. And your mantel, while you’re at it.

#7: Spend thousands of dollars on built-in ice boxes that resemble the doors in a morgue.

#8: Install tiny, fake stained glass windows inside your built-in bookshelves.

#9: Display lots of little knick-knacks along the top of a door frame to distract visitors from your beautiful, original woodwork. (Accessorize the heck out of the rest of the room while you’re at it, too.)

#10: Let your fireplace grow its own hair. (Via Touch of Class.)

Pretty scary to think of doing any of these things in your own home, isn’t it? I got chills just thinking about it.

Yikes. There’s just no accounting for some people’s taste…or lack thereof. Me? I prefer to go with more authentic scary Halloween decorations…that really do come alive.

I groaned at first, thinking not another Halloween post! But Oh Wow! You threw me for a curve, Julia, and I love what you’ve done.

9 Emily B October 31, 2008 at 7:43 am

Haha. The house that faces mine has an arched window above the front door and I cringe every time I look over there… they have small nicknacks and stuffed animals lined up on the ledge of that window. Scariest thing I’ll see tonight! LOL

10 Amy from Texas October 31, 2008 at 8:16 am

Very Scary Post! ha! I have a good friend from college who’s dad used to go on Safaris when it was fine and dandy to kill every animal known to man. Well, their house is also full of these creatures! I’ve got to get a picture and send it to you. You have to see it to believe it. They even have an entire log cabin full!! That will make one scary post next year. ha!

11 natalie meester October 31, 2008 at 8:17 am

12 Connie October 31, 2008 at 8:47 am

Wonderful post. I laughed ’till I cried! The amazing thing to me is that with all the decorating advice and great photos out there, why can’t people develop a better eye for design?

13 Jen October 31, 2008 at 8:52 am

14 Cindy October 31, 2008 at 9:25 am

I think I saw it move too!! too funny!…loved this post today. So do realtors take these photos?…Arent they trying to SELL the house….not shame the seller….I see MLS pictures with toilet seats up…beds not made…..its embarrassing. Happy Halloween! ~Cindy~

19 Brandee October 31, 2008 at 11:08 am

The ice boxes that resemble a morgue is hilarious. Seriously that picture gave me the creeps! Also, if I had a ton of money to pay someone to carve sculptures in my fireplace, old wrinkly, monkey looking people don’t come to mind.

20 wanderluster October 31, 2008 at 11:09 am

Super scary (and hilarious) post Julia! BOO to you! Happy Halloween <|:o)

21 Natalie at FLHomeBlog October 31, 2008 at 11:19 am

LOL!

That kitchen is morbid. Yikes. On the other hand I’d be super skinny.

Happy Halloween!

22 Aubrey October 31, 2008 at 11:41 am

Ew. Sickeningly frightening. What does Lily think about those? I forgot to comment before (on the post about her saying your house isn’t creative enough) that it looks like you have a little designer in the making. She’s so cute.

23 Pat October 31, 2008 at 11:43 am

Happy Halloween, Julia. I’m wearing a shawl, from the 70′s with fringe like that, on the fireplace scarf, today. It’s part of my witch ensemble.

Some pretty scarey pictures here!

24 Meredith October 31, 2008 at 12:00 pm

Now that was funny. Happy Halloween.

25 Liz October 31, 2008 at 12:20 pm

You had me at “paunchy gargolyes.” Who doesn’t need those? So much better than the more fashionable anorexic gargoyles so popular in Hollywood these days.

26 Debbie October 31, 2008 at 1:56 pm

Hahaha, this has got to be the best post I have seen yet regarding scary, halloween, etc. You did a great job. Love the animal head…that is such a guy thing…hubby has a deer head…I hid it where he will NEVER find it!
Have a great weekend!
Debbie

27 Cathy October 31, 2008 at 2:43 pm

Loved the morgue fridges! FYI–I highlighted some of our communities mansions on yesterday’s blog post.

28 kasey October 31, 2008 at 3:21 pm

oh, and the best part is the 2 rockers in the pink room. wicker rockers.
nice.

29 jeweledrabbit October 31, 2008 at 4:17 pm

Shudder.

30 Darla - Sassy Homemaker October 31, 2008 at 4:20 pm

HAHAHAHAH oh that’s funny. I can’t even pick a fav from those they are all so ummm just WRONG.

31 Jen R Sanctuary Arts October 31, 2008 at 7:58 pm

ohh, those are scary!!! The eyes next to the fireplace scare me… I was thinking about homes that are featured in scary films and the two I keep coming to mind are “Amityville” and there’s a movie called “Burnt Offerings” where I totally loved the houses… but I don’t know if they were as scary at those ;)

32 angela | the painted house October 31, 2008 at 10:05 pm

And on #3: not one but two heinous plaid sofas.

Great post, Julia!

33 kari & kijsa October 31, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Your comments are hysterical!

36 Gigi November 1, 2008 at 11:51 am

EEK!! Those pics were almost as scary as my messy closet. Next job on my to-do list…I really mean it this time.

Thanks for the giggle!

37 Kayjay November 1, 2008 at 9:54 pm

Julia, We love the new look and feel of the blog. Keep up the good work.

38 angie November 2, 2008 at 9:38 am

Are those iceboxes for real! They are very scary!!! Who does stuff likt that!

39 Derek November 2, 2008 at 10:53 am

I particualarly like the wicker furniture and small table in front of the morg refrigirators. You want people to be comfortable while they identify the body.

(these types of ice boxes are tipical of the 20′s and 30′s, Ice and meat could be loaded from the back.)

40 hookedonhouses November 2, 2008 at 2:02 pm

Derek’s right. I saw some of these on an historic house tour earlier this year in kitchens that hadn’t been updated. They looked very cool in those old houses, but I think all the white in this kitchen gave it a morgue vibe.

Your comments on this post are cracking me up. Like how those wicker rockers are for people waiting to identify the bodies in comfort. -Julia :-)

41 Lisa November 2, 2008 at 2:55 pm

Wow…the morgue ice boxes made me shudder. lol

42 Melissa Lewis - Off The Wall November 2, 2008 at 6:25 pm

Oh my gosh Julia, this post was hilarious. Girl, you know I had to be cringing at the awful paint jobs and that pink mantel!!!!

43 sandra/tx November 2, 2008 at 10:37 pm

THIS, my friend, is why I love your blog. Hilarious!

44 Melinda November 3, 2008 at 1:21 pm

45 please sir November 3, 2008 at 4:20 pm

46 Andrea November 3, 2008 at 6:33 pm

You are too funny. Thanks for the laughs.

47 laura @ the shore house November 3, 2008 at 9:10 pm

OMG. What causes #5?? WHAT?!?! To think how much they probably spent on that…

48 Amanda @ The Mom Crowd November 4, 2008 at 8:44 am

This was hilarious! When we bought our house I remember tearing out fake ivy from the hanging light in the kitchen.. it was scary.

49 Sue November 5, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Okay, now THAT was scary! I am giggling like crazy…thank you for that sweet Julia!

50 Norma November 7, 2008 at 2:56 am

Now #10 that’s a little bit too much with the fire place scarf, and #7, I love white kitchens, but that looks strange with the white wicker furniture in there ,and those white fridge or freezer boxes in the walls ,what’s that all about. Thanks for the scary pictures Julia.

51 bungalowbliss December 9, 2008 at 2:09 pm

This post is hilarious. And to think that the owners of these homes have to be so proud of their decorating prowess. I love the wicker set in front of the morgue fridge. What in the…?

52 Frankie December 10, 2008 at 12:24 am

these all are someones home.
not everyone has the resources or talent to do what others can. i used to be embarrassed by my home. mixed furniture, tv stand, you know what im talking about. I raise foster kids and help folks in need. that’s where my heart is as well as what little money i have left over. guests tell me that my home feels like “love and warmth”. but i still cant get imagined comments similar to the ones i read here.

My house is a $500,000 house. 3000 sq ft. 5 br, loft, spiral stairs and the works… just got a complex i guess.

have a great holiday

53 Kathi January 4, 2009 at 7:36 am

I’m still chuckling… I love your comments on these rooms! Just too funny! People really live like this! That’s the scary part!

54 ida February 26, 2009 at 3:14 am

lol i am laughing hard. the ice box room had alot of issues. the ceiling looked like someone wallpapered it. and there was no color on the walls. it was so ugly i didnt see the icebox effect at first. lol love your blog.

55 Bella Casa March 10, 2009 at 11:25 am

They were all pretty scary! That pink room and the ice box kitchen were my favorites ;)
