Lotsa Lights: Hooked or Hate It?

by hookedonhouses on July 30, 2008

This breakfast nook was in one of the Homearama houses that you didn’t see during our tour a few weeks ago, but I wanted to show you this breakfast nook. Look at all those light fixtures they hung over this relatively small table. I’ve never seen anyone do that before, have you?

I thought it was a little strange, but maybe this is some hot new trend in lighting that I’m not aware of. Maybe you all think it’s creative and gorgeous. Clearly, someone thought it was beautiful or they wouldn’t have hung them there. So I thought I’d take an informal poll to see who likes it and who thinks five fixtures is overkill.

Can’t wait to see which opinion gets more “votes” in the comments. Would you give this look a thumbs-up or down?

Thumbs down from me! I love the wood coffered ceiling, but the lights are overkill. I think that the one pendant light would have sufficed.

really, really hate this look — hope it’s not the next trend!

hmmmmm, no thanks! The center fixture would have been more than enough. Thanks, btw, for the nice comments on my blog.

Blech.

Actually the only thing I like about this room is the center of the ceiling.

I like it!
But I have to say it’s too much with the “triple” recessed ceiling detail and “exposed beams”. Overkill. And perhaps in a larger room it would do better as well.
Love the look and these particular fixtures.

Also, to be able to pull off this look I think you’d have to have a big color block or HUGE medalian effect to make them look grouped together, as the beamed area has done here. Like if you just hung them up on a plain, solid color ceiling it would look really stupid.

Eww. No way. It looks like part of the ceiling is missing.

Good Lord…It is not even just one fixture! Someone went to trouble to wire this. The wooden ceiling is great….but the rest…Thumbs down. How was the rest of the house? Overkill city, too?????

I’m with everyone else… I don’t think I like anything in this room. Lights included! lol

As my best friend, who always says what’s on her mind, would say, “So what’s up with all these lights?”

Oh! Did you watch “Flipping Out” the other night? I’m telling you, I laughed more during that episode than any other so far. That Jeff cracks me up. “I don’t have Lo-Jack on that new Mercedes yet!” If I were Zoila I’d keep on driving. haha

Thumbs down for me. It’s just to much for such a small area.

Nope, it’s too mouch to me. I think ONE even larger fixture than the big one would be much better.

I usually try to be kind and find the good in things, even if I dont like them… but I HATE this. It might be a good idea in theory, but not like this and NOT with those light fixtures.

I love the ceiling and the light fixtures totally take away from its beauty. Thumbs down indeed!

Too many lights for me. It looks like a lighting store display. I love love love your blog. My favorite of all time is the tour with the dogs room. I am off to buy apothocary jars for my dogs treats. Thanks for sharing, Paula

I don’t necessarily HATE the lights, but I don’t love them. I DO hate pretty much everything else. Those chairs are WAY too bulky for that little space. I would have gone with smaller chairs or some benches or something and left room for a larger table. The window treatments just look puny and weird. I’m pretty sure anyone trying to walk around the table would hit their head on those hanging floral arrangements – they’re not awful looking in and of themselves, but completely wrong placement for a small space. …And that’s just what I would criticize if I LIKED that style, which I don’t! I really don’t like it when people try to make a kitchen that formal and stuffy.

I think that the style of the 4 lights looks weird period. So
I don’t know. I really love the ceiling! Maybe some of the lights
turn off separately, that could be kind of nice.

It’s definitely too much. Looks like most everything in that house is going to be slightly over the top, too.

Well, this is homearama right? So it’s supposed to be extravagant- and it definitely is. It seems a bit overwhelming but it’s a departure from the standard 1 chandelier/pendant light thing that we’re all very used to. I think that teensy table is more weird than the light fixture(s). I like it.

It’s not as bad as it could be. I’ve seen worse. Thank goodness the four smaller ones are up high – otherwise it’d be blinding and you’d have to look at your own cooking. eep.

Well, other than the ceiling, too many lights, chairs that are too heavy and a table that’s too small, drapes that look weird and too blah of a color on the walls, I like it. :) Actually, the only thing I really like is the flower arrangement on the wall. The rest of it, not so much.
To the pp who commented on Flipping Out, Zoila SHOULD have kept driving. He was nuttier than usual in that episode. My fav part was when he asked his assistant/house boy/whipping boy what was missing from his El Pollo Loco meal. Guacamole! I always get guacamole! Where’s the guacamole???? Go steal some avacados from our neighbor. Dh and I were dying! We went out for Mexican last night (NOT El Pollo Loco) and both lost it when the server asked if we wanted guacamole with our meals. That’s going to be my new catch phrase :Where’s the guacamole?????

It isn’t my style, but I think it fits in with the whole theme of the room.

The table is much too small. I realize the area isn’t big enough to put a large table in, but from the lights to the chairs, they all just dwarf the table and make it look ridiculous.
