Wish You Were Here!

by hookedonhouses on July 24, 2008

You guys guessed it! We’re in the Washington, DC, area. We’re staying in Maryland near family but have been taking the train into the city every day to do some major sightseeing. Here we are in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

Here are the kids in the Bishop’s Garden outside the National Cathedral (above). We took a tour with a docent that was really interesting. Did you know it took over 80 years to complete?

Volunteers needlepoint kneeling pads with the names of famous Americans. I snapped Frank Lloyd Wright’s to show you:

Here’s Lily with her Pa Pa in front of the White House (below). There were various protesters hanging around with signs. My favorite was yellow with a big smiley face that said, “HAVE A NICE DOOMSDAY!” Gee, thanks.

That old house I showed you in yesterday’s post was from the historic Georgetown neighborhood. I was up half the night researching real estate listings in that area. There was a house the size of the Spite House (at least it looked that small from the outside) that just sold for $600,000. So it’s safe to say I won’t be moving there any time soon. But hey, a girl can dream.

Here are a few houses on one of the oldest streets in Georgetown. This is where a lot of politicians and news anchor-types live, according to our trolley tour guide:

The office building I showed you yesterday that we were in was the Cannon House Office Building where we picked up tickets and started our tour of the Capitol Building. The Cannon building is the oldest congressional office building, and there’s an underground tunnel that connects to the Capitol Building. The painting I showed you was on the ceiling of the rotunda.

Here’s Jake posing with George Washington–it’s the oldest statue in the Capitol:

We also spent a lazy afternoon exploring Annapolis, which is a short drive from our hotel:

It’s been a great trip. I’ll be back home and posting regularly again soon, I promise.

Even though we’ve been having a lot of fun, I’ve been missing you, my blog friends! I love coming back to the hotel at night and reading the comments you’ve left. It’s so nice to know you haven’t forgotten me while I’ve been gone. I was worried I’d come back to the blog after a week away and everyone would be, like, “Hooked on What? Julia Who?”

See you soon! -J :-)

Boy! Do I feel silly!!! I thought it was New Orleans. HA!!! Honestly, I thought that the other blogettes were probably right in saying Washington, DC….but, I just thought I’d be different.

Hope y’all are having a wonderful trip! It looks like you are!!! :)

Looks like you are all having a great time in D.C! I’ve visited twice before…I think we will get our fill of it when we move there in 2 years. With the prices of homes in the area, we will be living far, far out of the city. Yikes!

Well thats awesome! I was so off though. lol. I am glad that you and the family are having fun.

that looks like so much fun, Julia! we’re off to the beach with my parents…what a coincidence…hope you are having a great time. I’ve never been to DC – all kinds of foreign countries, but never my own capital. That just doesn’t seem right, does it? ONE day, I’m sure I’ll get there. :-)

It was the ceiling of the rotunda that gave it away to me! I’m sure the kids are loving it. Check out the National Gallery of Art. Not to be missed.

Dh attends a legislative conference each Feb.in DC. One year we all went with him. It was COLD.

There were only 2 protesters at the WH. The YOUNG pink ladies protesting war. This was probably

Our youngest 2 were around 6 & 7. They are either best friends or best enemies. Every once in awhile they will just have enough of each other & have a short knock down drag out. They had one right in front of the peace loving pink chics. I just shrugged & said good luck with world peace.

I know you are having a great time. Looking forward to more trip reports!

Love DC – we lived in Adams Morgan for a few years – that’s where I met my husband so it has some great memories. We lived in an old row home on Calvert Street – which is a close to the National Zoo – if you like Ethiopian food you should definitely check out Adams Morgan.

Hope you are having a great time. We did DC when my kids were young, fond memories.

I’m so glad that I guessed right on the Annapolis, MD one…I thought it looked like that area, near the water and all. I would have felt pretty stupid not guessing Washington D.C considering I was born there! I wanted to give you some variety in the guesses :)

Hmmm… I wonder how much one of those little shacks on Georgetown would cost? :) Looks like fun.

Many years ago I also visited DC with my family. I still remember seeing Mount Vernon and Monticello– now those are some houses for you!!

Oh and I forgot to tell you how lucky your kids are to be able to see DC. The Smithsonian is another unforgettable place and there is so much there to see that you would probably need a month of 40 hour weeks to see everything there!

Have fun and enjoy the history. DC is one cool place to visit!

Sadly, I’ve never been out of the South and it shows. I had no idea where you are. I hope you’re having a great time and I *love* those houses.

I think it is safe to say that we are Hooked on Julia!

Glad you are having so much fun. That will be a fun trip to take when my kiddos are older. Clayton and I stopped in on our honeymoon–romantic, I know–and that was the last and only time I have been to DC.

Oh, what fun! We went to D.C. two years ago, and it was the best vacation ever. We want to go back, because you could be there for weeks and still not see it all. :)

Have fun!!!

Step away from the computer…
:-)

I hope you didn’t spend *too* much time at your keyboard!

Ooh, I thought all that stuff looked really familiar, but I’m always afraid I’m way out in left field.

I used to live 13 miles south of DC and my parents would drag us into the city every Sunday, and sometimes more, to see stuff. Are you going down to Williamsburg? I think that was my most favorite vacation ever. And I was 13.

Did you get to go to the old part of Annapolis? My husband and I went there last Spring and visited my cousin, who lives there, and I loved all the old brick buildings on the wharf. So cool.

It’s been years since I’ve been to DC! You seem to have a beautiful blue sky to enjoy. Have Fun!

Yea… I love to be right… I was wrong on your Madonna home quiz… UGH!
Have FUN!

I know that this is a little bit late, but I’m going to DC in November. I remember that you had gone this summer and I was hoping that you could give me some tips on that area. Are there any places that you would’ve skipped and are there any that you would’ve liked to have visited but didn’t or didn’t spend enough time at? Any advice would be great. I haven’t been back there yet, so I’m excited and don’t want to come home sad that I missed something. Thanks for any help you can give!!
