My six-year old daughter Lily is lucky enough to live next door to her best friend Annabelle. Annabelle and her big sister Alexa are almost like part of our family. They spend many a summer day at our house playing school and putting on puppet shows.
But now, alas, they are gone for the week to their Grandma’s house.
When the realization of Annabelle’s absence set in, Lily went to her room and closed the door. I checked on her a few minutes later and found this sign outside her room written on the Magnadoodle (“I am sad. Do not come in”). She is just starting to write on her own, so it surprised me. I had to take a quick picture of it. Bless her heart, she’s so sad, but it made me smile.
I knocked on her door and told her I wouldn’t come in. I just wanted to throw her a kiss. “Okay,” she said.
I peeked in and found her sitting in her little white rocking chair in front of the window, holding her teddy bear. She threw me a kiss back and said, “I just need to be alone with the sadness right now.”
A little while later I walked by her room and found this message outside her door:
Motherhood doesn’t get much sweeter than that for me.
And Annabelle, we hope you come back real soon. Summer vacation just isn’t the same without you!

AWWWWWWWW
That litttle Lily is ADORABLE….my Jacqui used to leave notes all around the house for me……she’d sign “the note riter” I miss those days.’
Glad you captured this moment…they go so quickly.

Oh Lily, I know just how you feel. When I was a kid, my best friends used to head off for the beach for TWO WEEKS every summer and I was always very sad.
The good news is that when Annabelle comes back, you’ll have tons to talk about!
Now get your mom to take you out to do something fun.
That is true sadness! My dd is going to go thru that–her sister-friend is going away for 2 weeks and we’ll see how that goes.
Oh, that is so cute~! Don’t you just love magnadoodle messages? I love the first message the most, you can tell she really thought about it.

Too funny! I have three girls of my own – a little older now but I remember all the milestones like the one you described. How great that she is in touch with her feelings. Kids are precious!
That would do it for me too. So incredibly sweet!!
Awww! How sad, but how sweet! “I just need to be alone with the sadness”. They are so funny even when they are sad, aren’t they.
About 5 years ago, my son was 8 or so. My husband and I were going on a cruise that was being sponsored by his work. No children were coming. When we broke the news to my son, he said, “I really wanted to come on that cruise. I feel a deep sense of loss.” Isn’t that precious?!
They are real heart breakers aren’t they?
Oh. This is adorable. I’m so glad you took pics and posted about it – this is the kind of mommy moment you never want to forget. I agree with Maya…perhaps Lily’s mommy could take her out to do something special??
What a tender little heart she has. Precious!
Awww….how sweet is that???
That is very, very sweet. My little Chloe leaves notes around the house too- but she sticks them to things. Last night she taped a note saying “I’m hungery” to the computer monitor. Maybe I spend too much time there?
Oh, Julia, Lily is soooo sweet. I love her notes. Must take after her mother with the ability to communicate her feelings in writing, eh? When my youngest son was about 8, I often worked late. One evening when I go home around 7 pm, I went into my bedroom to change clothes. On my nightstand, he had left a piece of fruit and a post-it that said “I saved this banana of love for you.” I still have the note in my keepsakes, even though he is now 24!
My Lily’s best friend leaves for vacation on Friday so I’ll see if there’s a similar response.
Glad you got a picture!
That is so cute. What a sweet little girl you have. Two families that live right next to us are moving within the next week and I’m dreading the sadness my daughter will suffer when she realizes they’re not coming back.
Okay, that makes me want to cry. So sweet!
Oh my goodness… I remember when Annie was that little and it makes me so sad now that she’s going to be a teenager soon. The picture you put in my mind of her sitting in the chair with her teddy bear looking out the window is just so precious
I hope Annabelle comes home soon Lily…

Don’t tell, but I am a closet Madonna fan. Clayton’s first Mother’s Day gift to me was a trip to NYC to see Madonna in concert at Madison Square Garden. Yep, my mother’s day gifts have all gone downhill since then.
Ashton went to NYC, too, and spent his first birthday playing in Central Park and eating birthday cheesecake in a deli. Good times. For the record, Ashton DID NOT go to the concert–stayed in the hotel room screaming with my cousin’s stepdaughter.
Anyway, the kitchen. I love the simplicity…and what is that? A microwave on the counter like a regular joe? I’m impressed.
Okay, I thought I was posting on the celebrity kitchen. Nerd.
So sad and sweet at the same time….a great read.
That may be one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen! Isn’t it amazing how these mini people are sometimes so much better at articulating their feelings than people five times their age?! Maybe I should bring a magnadoodle board to work with me.
Aww, that is so sweet.
How sweet is THAT?!
Julia, she’s lovely! Enjoy these sweet years – they have a tendency to be gone fast. Maybe me and my 12-yr old girl would communicate better with a Magnadoodle around.
Adorable!! I’m so glad you posted this.
Why do any of us have to grow up! Wouldn’t the world be a wonderful place if we could only keep the honesty and spirit of a six year old in us.
