Girl’s Room Gone Wild: Hooked or Hate It?

by hookedonhouses on June 3, 2008

I ran across this little girl’s room featured in Southern Living and thought the way that they mixed the florals and pinks with the animal prints and antiques was unusual. In other words, it’s perfect for our favorite game — Hooked or Hate It?

Take a good look. What do you think? Are you hooked or do you hate it? Or something in between? I added a middle-of-the-road option by popular request.

I remember seeing this room when I had a subscription to SL. I personally don’t care for the bed and wallpaper/painting; but kids room are all about taking risks and doing something fun. I love the yellow secretary against that floor.

I think I like it. Granted it’s not something I would pick for myself, but my daughters would like it. The bed it a bit much for a girls room. I think it’s too formal or grown up. But the carpet is fun!

I think it definitely works for a kids room. There IS definitely the contrast in the formality of the room and furniture paired with the sort of whacky colors. Kids love this stuff. Rather clever, I think.

believe it or not the only thing I don’t really like is the carpet. It just seems to take away from the sweetness of the overall room.

Oh what a fun game! I actually love the room except for the carpet. Not that I don’t like the carpet, I just think I’d get sick of it in my house pretty quickly. If it were an area rug rather than wall to wall (which is what it appears to be), then you could easily remove it if you got sick of it.

Everything about this room to me says over-indulged tween princess with massive sense of entitlement, certain to get into all sorts of trouble come high school. Not that I’m judgemental or anything.

Seriously, the only things in this room that are appropriate for a girl’s room are the chaise and the secretary. The carpet and bed are too grown up.

I love it. If I were single, I’d have it for my room! But my honey would not be so thrilled. Too girly. Which is the same problem my girls might have with it. Their taste is more moderate…I don’t know where they got that from! Hee hee.

I LOVE IT! I am not much one for “cute”, so the animal prints help tone down the “cute factor” that the room would be overrun with. The antique bed is absolutely gorgeous…I’m not sure a wee daughter would appreciate such a massive thing…but it would certainly help to make her feel like a princess!

Cool blog…I believe I shall go vote on the other rooms!

I guess I have to hate it. It just makes me feel uncomfortable. Too much going on for me.

I really like it! I think the bed and carpet add a bit a maturity and help balance off the younger pink and green look. It’s a great design for a growing girl!!

I like it. I wouldn’t have picked it, but I do like it. To me, the bed is out of place – I think I’d like a nice antique, white iron bed. As a rule, I’m not an animal print kind of girl, but it works in this room. Just not in my house.

Umm…I hate the bed. For a little girls room. I wish the carpet were a throw rug…a whole room in animal print carpet seems a bit much.

It’s cute, but it seems like the novelty would wear off quickly, and that’s a lot of time/expense/resourses to invest for a room that will likely be in disfavor in 9 months. SoI have to lean toward hate it.

I *love* it. Totally hooked. When you were little, did your parents ever pick out furniture for you that you HATED because you were a little kid and not a grown up? I think this is a great way to intergrate the pieces that they will appreciate when they are older with the funky preteen taste they have now. When that girl is 40 she may love that bed and be so glad that her parents didn’t buy her a white metal bunk bed that was sold in a yard sale a few years later.

It’s so funky and eclectic. I love the carpet and the bedskirt with that bed.

I love it. I think that it is a fun room. I like that it is all different and not a typically “coordinated” room. For some reason, all the patterns and colors work, in my opinion.

Hooked, for a little girl’s room. How fun and funky.

I can’t imagine how anyone could fall asleep in that room. But I’m sure a lot of little girls would love it.

The carpet is over the top for me.

I actually love the room – minus the carpet, and I would paint the bed white or yellow like the secretary.

The only thing I don’t like are those bleeping flowers. Enough is enough! Flowers on the walls, the chaise and I believe the curtains. I get the mixing in of flowers, but these are hideous and over the top, enough to make me hate the room over all. Design in kids room is all about speaking to them, but you also have to reign it in, otherwise not only will the parents hate it, but the kid will too in a year or so.
Unlike others, I love the carpet and think that it lends itself to the child growing up.

I hate the leopard print carpet!! Seems more boudoir than little girl’s bedroom…kinda creepy really…when are kids going to be allowed to remain kids? That carpet is the equivalent of a belly shirt on a six-year old!! Can you tell I hate it…???!!!!!

I love this feature. Your blog, for lack of a better word, rocks!!

The proportions of the queen bed and smaller secretary hutch go perfectly with the scale of the room. The heavly carved darker bed grounds the room and relaxes the eye. A standard white twin bed would not have worked quite as well in this room. The designer took risks with color and pattern and it worked well! I love that!

I dislike it. Maybe it is the colours…. If the wall paper patern was toned down maybe I would like it. The bid does not fit the image of the room.

Eep! Those oversized roses on a bile green ground juxtaposed against a leopard (or cheetah or whatever) print carpet! The bed is impressive, but not suitable for a young girl. The only thing I like are the windows, but not the straight drapery rod and curtain treatment, a style that always detracts from the graceful form of arched windows in my opinion.

If my parents had decorated my room like this I would have run away from home! It’s uglier than sin…

It’s so funky, I love it! She may get tired of the carpet and wall treatment later, but in a few years they can make a few changes (tone down) to the walls and curtains. Put a fuzzy white rug on the floor to tone the rug down and you have a sophisticated teenage girls room with a bed she can have/love forever (I know I do) .
