Decorative Textured Ceilings: Hooked or Hate It?

by hookedonhouses on May 27, 2008

Hooked on Houses reader DaK sent me these photos of textured ceilings that are in swirly, spiral and sunburst patterns. It was one of the most unusual ceiling treatments I’ve ever seen, so I just had to show you.

And, of course, I have to know what you think. First look. Then discuss.

Well? What’s the verdict? When it comes to decorative ceiling treatments like these, are you hooked? Or hating them? Let us know what you think in the comments.

(Photos and more information found here if you want to contract this Canadian company to create patterns on your ceilings, too.)

Hi, thank you much for coming by to see me today. I appreciate it…

No, I don’t care for textured ceilings but I know a lot of folks do. I still prefer the plain, white ones.

Don’t like it. It is too cheezy.

Hmmm…. Interesting trend… I hope this particular one doesn’t catch one. It looks like a tub of butter or ice cream before you scoop out of it. A better textured ceiling treatment it textured wallpaper. I will send the link later.

Yeah. I really hate that. Can that really be a NEW trend? Those photos looked so outdated. (I sure hope I didn’t offend the owner of those photos by saying that….)

I’m the minority here today…I love it. If I hadn’t just had my LR ceiling textured, I’d be tempted to do one of these.

I don’t know if it’s the picture quality or if I really just don’t like it. I’m thinking the only place that a textured, patterned ceiling would look right is maybe in a craftsman style or Victorian home. I don’t know…….I’m thinkin’ maybe I’ll just go with ‘hate it’. I’m too modern in my tastes and like the look of clean lines too much to care for something foo-foo like a textured/patterned ceiling. Oh well. Thanks for sharing! :)

I hate it, but textured ceilings are the norm here. Apparently it is just too much work or too much skill is required to sheetrock and plaster a plain ceiling. Much cheaper to go with the textured/ swirled/ stactite ceiling look . Doesn’t make it right or pretty tough.

I don’t like textures ceilings. They seem too flaky to me.
But all opinions are unique and I say if you like them,
good for you.

OK, stalactite, I was just missing a syllable…I am always missing something these days.

I think they look like someone was trying to avoid skimcoating the ceiling properly but didn’t want to do the popcorn effect. I would hate to have to repaint them. I’m with JLB – if you want texture, go with textured wallpaper… or beadboard or punched tin.

Nope, don’t care for it! I went through 20 years of living in a swirly ceiling house & now I have smooth and never again the swirls. So many have had popcorn ceilings too (thank goodness, I never did!) and I can see why they would hate it too. Smooth all the way for me!

Hey, stop by tomorrow. I’m posting LOTS of beach cottage pics from my recent trip to FL.

Hi Julia..I’ve enjoyed catching up with you this morning!

I love the Amish post and photos!

We had swirly ceilings at the farm. When we built our new house we absolutely insisted on smooth!

I’m posting some houses later today, then we’re off for a little R&R at the lake. Haven’t been since before J’s surgery, so we are in serious need of a getaway!

Have a great rest of the week!
Pat

This is really bad! It reminds me of my parents family room ceiling when I was a teenager. My dad hired some guy to re-texture the popcorn ceiling while we were on vacation, the guy decided to make it more interesting my adding long, long chunks of stucco and threw glitter in just for effect. REALLY BAD!! My poor parents, they were so nice about it. If it had been my house, the next time I saw that guy it would have been in court.

not loving it. I like interesting ceilings but that just seems really dated to me. cool topic! I can actually say I’ve never seen ceilings done like this.

Oh my…I think someone was on acid when they decided to do these plaster patterns

Marie has a point. I actually do like them, but, I also live in a 150 year old house, and I think these would fit quite nice with our woodwork (at least the circular ones – if any of our rooms were square)

I generally *don’t* like textured ceilings either. Not the acoustic tile-esque popcorn ones, or the spiky balloon killing paint ones, but these aren’t so bad. Also, I reserve the option that they may be hideous in person.

Ummmm nope, not for me.

I do love wallpapered ceilings … Bradbury & Bradbury style though!

From one who has every ceiling in her home textured with ceiling paper, (the cottage-y, vintage look) I must say I’m not too keen on the textured nightmare of swirls and spirals overhead. It seems it distracts from the rest of the room. I never thought the ceiling needed to be a focal point, but kind of an after thought. But then, that’s just me. :-)

Horrible. No textured ceilings, no way, no how.

I think you need the house for it. A ceiling like that in a modern home would seem out of place, but in a 100 year old home with 15ft ceilings, it would fit well in. The first two I like, the 3rd one is a little odd.

i think the first one is pretty as itself, but as a ceiling i dont really like it..
if they could be changed from the slightly cheesy swirls to something more modern and ‘cool’ (more angular, shapes maybe? play around with the light hitting it..?), i think they could be a centerpiece in a room in a futuristic/modern house. not distracting, but eyecatching. something that adds to the room.
but only if it was done completely right :P

I like them if you have up to date decor, the furnishings, fixtures and wall colors in the pictures are quite dated. If they were up to date then the ceiling would add pizazz.
