Fantasy Open House: It’s Time to Make an Offer!

by hookedonhouses on May 9, 2008

Hard to believe our Fantasy Open House tour of Birmingham, Alabama is already over. This town certainly didn’t disappoint. We’ve seen a lot together this week. Some things made us swoon–sunrooms, bluestone terraces, fountains and pools, long brick driveways, fabulous fireplaces, and walls of windows. We’ve also seen some things that made us shudder–dead animals used as decor, wig closets, and wallpaper that could wake the dead.

Now it’s time to vote for the house you’d most like to live in. This is a Fantasy Open House, which means you can pretend all eight are in your price range. It’s more about figuring out which one closest matches your style than which will give the smartest return on your investment.

You can also vote on which one you’d least like to live in, since you all seem to have so many opinions on the matter! To review, here are your choices:

House #1: French Chateau in Birmingham

House #2: Shook Hill Mansion

House #3: Sleek Greek Contemporary

House #4: Southern Traditional

House #5: Homewood Manor

House #6: Rockledge Estate

House #7: Stately Brick Traditional

House #8: Old Leeds Ridge

Thanks to everyone who played along with our Fantasy Open House game this week. The comments you left each day made it so much fun. I can’t wait to see which houses you vote for!

I voted for #4 the Southern Traditional. Although I’d rather put the interior of #6 inside #4 and then it would be close to perfect. I figure if I had the money though I’d just make #4 what I want it to be.

This was a great house hunting week. It was easy to vote for a hate it (the Greek Contemporary because I’m too traditional) and it was hard to vote for a favorite. The house I probably liked the most had the kitchen I liked the least and they all had really good features and then some really scary ones.
I loved the house with the stairs in the bathroom and the bathroom sinks facing windows–too cool.
I liked the pool with the fountain thingies pouring into it. Aah! Too many fun things.
I voted for the biggest and last house as my favorite. I figure, since I couldn’t decided, I’d go all out and use my pretend fortune to REMODEL. Maybe I’m wasting my pretend money because that house really is too fancy for me, but I liked the roominess and the kitchen was good. I like a kitchen with lots of windows all around it. I guess I should have been making comments all week instead of just once. We’ve had stomach flu here.

French Chateau, here I come. (Though if I really did have $5.8 mil to work with, I might do the Chateau AND the sleek Greek.)

Hi, Juliia, I’m obviously living in the wrong area of B’ham! I have no idea where all of these houses are, but I see that most of them are in Mountain Brook, the tony, exquisite moneyed area of our fair city. We do have a lot of gorgeous houses, don’t we?? I’m in suburbia and don’t get to these pricey neighborhoods all that often although I used to work for a guy who lived in Mountain Brook & I can tell you his house was to die for too.

Fun to look at, I don’t think I can pick one! We are fine from the storms yesterday, nothing bad out our way. I’m happy you featured B’ham, so that everyone can see how beautiful and stately the homes are here (not that I would know anything about it-ha!).

Hi Julia!
Oh the B’ham tour was fun – my sweet friend Rhoda lives there (I’d definitely pick her house if it was on the tour!).. Let’s see, I guess I’ll go with #4 – they are all wonderful in their own way, but as you know – my heart belongs to only one! ;-)

Have a wonderful weekend!

Only 1 and 3 were drawn by some one that understands how to make big spaces human. The rest come across as an over embellished, over sized “executive” house, and that ignores the decorating.

I’d take 3. It is a guy house. It could be on a hill in LA, or the Intercostal in south Florida. Initial offer $1050k, 25k less if the tennis court needs to be reoriented north south.

I liked #6 the best. I just like the subdued exterior and the way the house seemed so comfortable inside. It reminded me of an English Country home, which is my personal favorite of all home styles.

Hi Julia,

I pick number 4….it’s very much sutied to me. The one I least like is the Sleek Greek although Homewood Manor is a close second….

As always a fun post…..I see you had a lovely Mother’s Day !!!

Take care,
Kathy :)
