Pink Kitchen Remodel: Hooked or Hate It?
On the HGTV show Kitchen Trends they featured this newly remodeled kitchen in a segment called “Pretty in Pink.” I thought it would be perfect to kick off a new feature here at Hooked on Houses that we’ll call (drumroll) Hooked or Hate It?
In this game, we’ll look at rooms and vote that we’re either 1) Hooked or 2) Hate It! Easy enough, right? I think this pink kitchen is one that could go either way.

So now that you’ve seen the kitchen, what do you think? Do you love it? Or hate it? Or something in between? This is just a fun way to think about what you would or wouldn’t like for yourself. Obviously, everyone has their own tastes and style, so there’s no right or wrong here.

Whew. This feels like one of those rehabs someone buying the house would curse the former owner for doing. Hate it. And it’s a shame because the space is wonderful.
April 25th, 2008 at 7:28 am
This is a tough one. I was actually kind’a liking the first pic, but as I scrolled down to reveal more and more pink I began to side with HATE IT. Although it’s not my taste it’s still well done. The only pink in my house is in my 13 yr old’s bathroom, and it’s going to stay that way!
April 25th, 2008 at 7:36 am
I really HATE IT, and it’s such a shame. When I look at the ceiling beams and the stone wall, I think how terrific it would look if it was done right. They can keep the appliances and the cabinets (if they must) and get rid of everything else. Oh, those chandeliers. . .now that’s just not right.
April 25th, 2008 at 8:44 am
I voted “hooked” even though I wouldn’t say I’m hooked on it. It’s absolutely not my style but I do think it’s pretty. My mother in law and my 6 year old would love it. My daughter is always asking me to paint every room in the house pink.
April 25th, 2008 at 8:48 am
Oh, no.
April 25th, 2008 at 9:00 am
I said hooked because I love the cabinets and countertops. However it does remeind me of steel magnolias “pink is my signature color……my two shades of pink..blush and bashful”
April 25th, 2008 at 9:05 am
I don’t like to vote on people’s personal style. People deserve to create an environment that makes them happy. So I say hooked because THEY love it and the kitchen is tastefully done. The pink could be changed over to something else if someone else moved in and didn’t like all the pink. So, GOOD FOR THEM. More people should go with their personal style and not create copy cat houses.
Happy day,
Melissa

I completely agree that people should decorate the way they want and express their personal style. You’re voting whether you’d want it for yourself or not.
April 25th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Not for me, though someone obviously loves it because it was a LOT of work.
April 25th, 2008 at 9:44 am
I would love it…except…it’s pink. I guess that’s the point, isn’t it? I love the style of the kitchen, I wouldn’t have chosen pink myself, BUT…I think I’ll say Hooked. It’s very well done even though it’s not my personal taste.
April 25th, 2008 at 10:34 am
I voted hate it. As far as personally styled homes go, its not
as bad as it could be. I mean their are a lot of homes that
people ‘decorate’ when they have no decoration since at all.
It’s just one of those maybe 90’s fashion, my mother did this,
popuri, kind of kitchens. I just don’t like the popuri style.
April 25th, 2008 at 11:12 am
Hate the chandelier…….it’s a kitchen people….cooking, smoke & grease….smeared all over …. ick ….
Hooked on everything else though….
April 25th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
I voted for “hate it” simply because I don’t like the more permanent details of the room. The frilly trim on the cabinets and hearth, the fancy fake legs on the cabinets, the wavy edge treatment on the granite, and the chandelier. I prefer a much simpler, classic style for those harder-to-replace items.
But the pink itself didn’t bother me! I particularly like the shade of hot spicy pink used in those window treatments. If the rest of the kitchen had been a bit simpler, maybe just a basic cottage style, then I think having accents of that pink against the black and white would work very nicely!
April 25th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
Umm.. I think I’m speechless. I don’t HATE it, but it’s certainly not my taste.
April 25th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Hate it. And that’s coming from someone who LOVES pink.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Ok, I can’t say ‘hate’ but I could not live with this kitchen. I’m really glad the owner loves it - and that her hubby is ok with it - but there must not be any serious cooking done in that space. How hard would it be to clean spaghetti sauce off that backsplash over the range?!! We are doing a remodel of our new home before we move there and our focus is simplicity. The simpler the details, the easier to clean. (yes, we can be a slobs so we are thinking ahead, lol) Needless to say, we will not have a chandelier anywhere, although I love to see them in other homes.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
Can I be half Hooked? I really like many elements, especially the rosette back splash and the toille wallpaper. The window treatments are too poofy for me though.
Cool new game!
April 25th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Should I add a “Half Hooked” category for next time? I couldn’t think what to call a middle-ground.
April 25th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
It’s a nice place to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there.
April 25th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
I’m so glad I found your blog, it is very fun & I’m adding you to my blogroll. !
I voted “hooked”, however, I’m not a huge fan of decorating with pink, so that was for the large appeal of the kitchen itself, not the pink decor. I also love toile, however in a more understated color. The kitchen has great bones and would be great with a few changes.

This is such a fun blog!
I voted hate it, but I guess that is a bit harsh. I respect the people who designed it, I can kind of tell what kind of glamour they wanted to create and enjoy here … why not?
For sure I would never design anything like this in our home!!! Frills, fluffy draperies are just totally unreasonable to me… and so is pink!
April 25th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
I voted that I love it, but I really just like it. I do love the architectural features and the chandelier, but pink wallpaper is too much and I’d really love to see what The Nester would do with those windows. I do hate those ruffly curtains. Blech.
Maybe I just wish my kitchen was that big.
April 25th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
Yeah–do a half-hooked option.
April 25th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
OMG!!!! You people this pretend stuff so seriously…….loosen up a little….it’s just decorating nobody lost an eye in the process….yeesh.
April 26th, 2008 at 9:52 am
Julia– What fun this was! I really enjoyed reading everyone’s comment’s and deciding on hooked or hate it for myself. I love your blog! as it takes me away for a few minutes everyday from the real stress of life. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to the next “Hooked or Hate it.”
April 26th, 2008 at 10:44 am
Oh Julia how fun !!!! I HATE it…..I thought when I saw the first picture it was going to be alright…the more I saw the more it brought me to this conclusion…….I think another color choice and it would be a beauty though !!! So wait does that make me 1/2 hooked…lol ???
Have a great rest of the week-end,
Kathy
April 26th, 2008 at 11:42 am
There are more pics ?
Guess I better go look.
I vote for half hooked option also being added.
April 26th, 2008 at 11:59 am
Still would replace the chandelier.
Would rework the stove top area. What were they thinking ? Is that a recessed area within the detailed back splash. More grease catchers.
Love that tall spigot to fill large pots with water. Brilliant.
Still love it. But I am the lone estrogen cell in a sea of testosterone.
April 26th, 2008 at 5:44 pm
It’s not the pink that I hate, but the frou-frou…the “balloon style” curtains, all the scrolly bits…I love the sink and the chandelier, though!
This designer is just way over the top!! Took it a bit too far…

From a person who hates unnecessary cleaning, I almost want to shout, “RUN! Run away quickly!” But I looked at it a little more, and I actually like the look of the stuff behind the stove. I would, however, cover it with a sheet of clear glass or plexiglass so it would be easy on the eyes AND easy to clean. But the pillars? No way. Maybe if they were on the doorway to the kitchen. But not around the stove. Ick. I’m thinking grease splatters. Maybe it’s a kitchen for the not so serious cook. I dunno.
As far as the rest of the kitchen, if I were contempleting buying the house, the kitchen would be the kicker that would prevent me from purchasing it! The pink curtains look like frosting on a cake that is way too sweet.
My vote: hate it.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:10 am
I’m going to have to go with hate it, but… it’s not completely unfortunate!
April 28th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
I do like the cupboards and countertop, but the pink is SO wrong!
April 29th, 2008 at 8:40 am
It seems very “decorated” I wonder what it would look like IRL ?
You know with Cherrios on the floor , Spaghettios stuck to the walls, 3 days worth of mail & unread newspaper piled on the bar.
Have to say :
I hate it … too frilly!
April 30th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
I. Hate. It. Ugh. So fussy.

Is this Barbie’s kitchen?
October 11th, 2008 at 7:43 am
OK! Again in my life I find that I am the minority……..and I just LOVE IT when that happens! (No, REALLY!) This kitchen is nearly everything I have dreamed of for my “dream kitchen”, but with only a few minor changes. My dream kitchen has been pink and black and white, forever! The style and design are more “me” than any other pink kitchen I have EVER seen! This kitchen says to me, elegance, sophistication, class, artistic flare, tenderness, ability to love and nurture gracefully! At the same time this room also depicts, for me, a sense of fun……….a dare to venture outside the norm, to express uniquely, that which is me and reflects me. Oh, and by the way, I am a very clean person, and I have a similar kitchen, so keeping a phoo-phoo kitchen clean and germ free is actually quite easy! YES! I DO cook up a storm with my husband, and we have a 5 year old boy and a 13 year old girl, very large dog and a cat, and I do ALL the cleaning with NO help from anyone, as I believe my husband works enough hours at his job, my children need to pour their energy into learning things far more important than house chores at this day and age. I can do it better and faster myself…..not to mention, that is MY job, as the mother and wife! I ENJOY it! Yes it is work, but then this pays far better than any work outside of our home!!!!!!
SOOOOOOOOOOO, LOVE IT!!! I say BRAVO! to the designer, and to the owner-lady, I bet I would really like you! and to you hookedonhouses, I say THANK YOU! It is fun to read all the responses……..and of corse, to share my own veiws.
October 12th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
The style of this kitchen really isn’t me, but I do love the features! The water by the stove, the sink in the island, the easy wipe table, it’s all really great. It wouldn’t be my first choice, but it wouldn’t KILL me to live there either!(and for those who think so harshly of it, would it kill you to appriciate the work that someone put into that?)
November 7th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
I will not put my name because I am too young…… You people are all so critical…. The person who designed this kitchen, lives in that house. Her daughter is my best friend, so stop insulting their kitchen. I’ve been in it many times….. and the pillars are for spices!!!!!!! I like that kitchen so shut up you mean people! She is a very nice lady and she is a cook, and unlike you messy people she doesn’t make messes when she cooks! you are insane! thats all. And if you wish to comment on my comment then fine i dont care! comment all you want because you are mean people

Anon–I’m very sorry these comments upset you. I think you’re very lucky to get to spend time in a house this pretty! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and defend the kitchen. I can tell you really love it, and I think that’s great! -Julia
