A Parisian-Style Sanctuary

The February ’08 issue of Domino magazine arrived in my mailbox yesterday, even though I had absolutely no memory of ordering it (I wonder if this is like that disorder where people get up in the middle of the night and eat everything in the fridge in their sleep? Except I’m getting up and ordering more magazines off the Internet?).

When I opened the magazine, the first thing I saw was this lovely room.  It’s the handiwork of a Domino reader named Catherine who submitted photos of her re-decorated master bedroom for a decorating contest they were having. Readers voted online for their favorite room and she won the $10,000 prize.

The mag says Catherine wanted to turn two small bedrooms into one airy, Parisian-style sanctuary, so she took a sledgehammer to the wall herself and then “painted, lime-washed, stenciled, sawed and silver-leafed this boudoir into existence herself.” I’m impressed.

The hardwood floors look either bleached or painted (can anyone tell?). She stenciled the closet doors. Besides the chaise and chair that she bought for the room, she re-used everything she already had. Catherine even chopped the posts off her old brown bed and painted it.

Here’s a view with the dresser and mirror that she refinished:

Looking at this makes me want to head straight for my own bedroom and start painting stuff. How about you?-

To read more about Catherine and her project and see more photos of the room, go to Domino.

UPDATE: Lobstermobster left a comment on this post saying she had seen other photos of the winner’s home on Apartment Therapy, so I looked it up. Here’s the link to the post if you want to see some of the other creative things she did in her home (but I agree with Lobstermobster that the bedroom is my favorite). Thanks, Lobstermobster, for the heads-up!

I love this particular room, she deserved her win. On apartment therapy they showed pictures from the rest of the house, and from her comments it seems like she wasn’t exactly prepared for that sort of exposure but the rest of her house is pretty nuts. busy busy busy with colors. Not my particular style. I REALLY love that chair in the first picture!

Thanks for steering me to the post on apartmenttherapy.com, Lobstermobster! I was pretty excited to find that. You’re right about Catherine’s comments–she seemed a little shocked that everyone was seeing pictures of her place and judging it.

That all looks so serene. When we move, I really have to try to develop my own style and see what I can come up with. We’ve moved around a lot and I’ve gotten into a rut. I would love to have my own such sanctuary.

You are not crazy! Ok you might be, but you probably didn’t order Domino you ordered something else and Domino bought you info from them. They are a realitively new magazine and they are trying to build up the readership. I am not totally crazy about them ,but one great thing is that they feature rooms and furnishings that are more achievable for the average person. (Not the 7 figure incomes featured in AD). So in that case I think I mis-spoke like a certain candidate for president and I actually do like them…. must think on that for a moment. Have a great day.
